Greetings from reenactor, NW suburbs, Chicago

New Hunter
Greetings group, My name is B. Yurko Mikels.

Like all of you, I too am an avid SW fan. I became a rabid fan with the release of Ep IV ANH in '77. Mostly my interest is limited to the Original Trilogy but Jango Fett is pretty cool too.

I am also a historical reenactor aligning myself with those considered, "Hardcore Authentics". Meaning I have a critical eye for authenticity which may be a bonus if I wish to be accepted into the 501st. Or more likely, a hinderance to my checking account. Several of my historical impressions are Cavalry so I full well understand cost involved with a costuming hobby.

I have some experience outside of a historical context as this is my kit from another universe. Date on the camera was wrong, this was taken in 2012. That kit took me 4 years to complete investing around the 3k range. Unfortunately, that universe does not do too much regarding putting smiles on kids faces and that is one of my goals. I highly admire the activities of the 501st and their charity work.

What I have discovered over the weekend being here and over at the BHG is that I have much reading and research to do. The character I would like to build is Boba Fett, RoTJ. I am a little hesitant however with my 74", 215 lb frame. This is my authenticity background getting in the way. I feel I may be too tall for a good Fett in the 501st.

Best regards-

Thanks Danzo, it's not lost to me that you took a moment to reply. One out of 40 plus views. It's promising. My guess is that the SW (BH) costuming community didn't dig my efforts in the other Universe, no matter how much research and money went into that kit. And I mostly agree with them...

Of the few ST themed events I've gone to in kit, tragically single, basement dwellers were overly prominent. And zero had kit near canon. I have heard my kit is only one of 3-4 in the entire country that is canon to the franchise and mine is only about 90%. Anyone interested in some trades? :cool LoL...

For the record, I did attend one Celebration. The one held in Indianapolis. (III) I think it was. I had put together a TIE Fighter kit for that.

Ah well, I've got a ton of reading and research to do before I purchase my first piece of hardware or soft kit. Plus I just ordered the two available SW costuming books listed on Amazon. Old school.

Best regards-

Greetings toolguy301,

That is very cool to know you're an hour +/- from my place as I've been checking out your 3D printed kit offerings with admiration. Particularly the metal pieces. When the time comes to start procuring kit, will have to hit you up.

Best regards-

Salutations F4R,

If you're saying; Do I have an obsession with attention to detail and affliction toward authenticity to the limits of what is available then yes...I'm doomed along with a large portion of my disposable income.

Hopefully however, during the past 17 +/- years of serious SW costuming much of the path toward screen accurate kit has already been blazed by several brave pioneers. I have often been the pioneer in other genre (Historical) hobbies and it is ALWAYS detrimental to one's checking account. Procuring what is available in the early years then constantly re-purchasing as upgrades become available.

For this genre, I don't mind, "Being late to the party". As I believe today a beginner with a passion can do enough research resulting in most excellent kit. I have seen plenty of Artists on TDH offering really nice, screen accurate kit and painting services. Many specializing in certain components. I understand this journey will not be a "One-stop shop". Unless I was to throw all my money at someone like Bobamaker or the like. :facepalm

Time is understood as well. Took me 5 years to put canon Klingon kit together. Hopefully I can kit out before I need a walker and I'm not referring to offensive weapon systems on Hoth...

You will be able to find all you would ever want about found parts here. As for getting parts for the suit here are two pieces of advice; do lots of research and when you think you have a grasp on everything, do more and the second is to stay away from eBay. Man of was studios is really the only reputable seller of fett gear there so if it's not from him I would stay away.
Welcome to the never ending journey that is fett.

Thanks jc27, Sound advice but Ebay was not even considered on my future shopping list. As a progressive, Historical reenactor I learned soon after it's origin in 1995 that mostly Pakistani crap was being offered up on Ebay. Only to be confirmed by the several posts I've read here and on the BHG within this genre.

Quite frankly, I was surprised that there is ONE source recommended by the 'ones in the know' here, selling on Ebay. Perhaps MoW feels he can reach a wider market than merely advertising on the forums. I am sure I will use MoW for something. He even offers the correct items made in Tackle Twill. Must be Tackle Twill if I wish to seek the level two certification within the 501st. Even Bobamaker doesn't offer Tackle Twill flak vest on his website. That's disappointing as I really like the construction detail of his. I think I read Arkady offers the Tackle Twill as well. Would need to review that.

Best regards-

Yes, arkady does offer tackle twill. As for parts there a few threads covering who sells what if you are wondering about that. You mentioned bobamaker for parts. He does good work but you will be waiting for a while to get them since he is backed up. Same goes for a few others here, but there are also some that have a quick turnaround. It depends on how much you want to spend, and how long you are willing to wait.
I actually bought my helmet and gauntlets first and have been slowly getting the rest. There are a few pieces, namely the jetpack harness that is hard to come by if you want a screen accurate one. They pop up from time to time, but usually go quick.
Hope that helps.

jc27,

Like I mentioned, it took me 5 years to complete my kit from that other Universe so I'm not against waiting for quality.

Per CRL, level 3 certification;

"Must have accurate scuba tank frame with black webbing waist belt connected to include the accurate US Divers buckle (or replica)."

So this is what pops up from time-to-time and is difficult to find? And thanks for your time and advice-

No one can confirm its a scuba tank frame. I dunno why they call it that.

And yes there are some people who have to have all the found parts but others who will use replicas. And others who want to stay under a budget. And then there's others who have to make everything because they think they can do a good job but at the end it looks self made and not screen accurate. And here we really strive for screen accurate a step above 501st and any other standards. It's a deep rabbit while you just jumped into.

well said Dom.

Thanks for the insight Mr. Dom. And the heads-up regarding the JP harness. I was mistakenly under the assumption the 501st standards were the pinnacle of screen accurate authenticity. At least their 'Level 3 certification' CRL. You only confirm my belief that TDH is the right place for this costuming journey.

I still believe in the charitable mission of the 501st and the my justification spending this much money on a costume. That of putting smiles on children's faces. Especially those going through some very difficult health issues. As I'm not initiating this merely to kit up at a Con to walk around getting my photo taken.
