WIP: KaosDaniel Custom Mando

Hello everyone! My name is Daniel and i´m from Germany. I got a little problem, which I hope can be solved with a little help from here. First of all i´d like to say, that this forum is really awesome and really an inspiration for my project.

Well now my problem: i have an old Rubies Boba helmet which is in a pretty bad condition. It has got some cracks and is deformed in some areas. For the deformed parts i tried to bend it right again after i worked on it with a heatgun. I also bought some plastic putty to repair the cracks from the inside of the helmet, but that didn´t work out quite well. Has anyone an idea how i to repair the helmet. It doesn´t have to be too accurate for i want to build a custom mando anyway...

Did you use some kind of special glue or putty?

Superglue or epoxy should work.... as far as putty goes, look for a German equivilent of Bondo. Basicially, automotive body filler

Thank you guys so far. I think Bondo should do it, the German equivilent would be "2K Spachtel" which is a 2-component putty if i'm not wrong. I'll try to Load up some pics tomorrow so you can follow the progress and give me some advice ;) But for today i'm first working on my armor...

Just to let you know, if you intend on applying to the Mandalorian Mercs, they are not accepting the Rubies Boba in their membership applications due to the poor casting.

If you are, it would be wise to look for an alternative instead of repairing.

If not, good luck with the repair, one possible way is hot glue, it will bond to the surface and you can use a scalpel to smooth out the repair.

No i don´t want to apply for the Mandalorian Mercs (yet) ;) I know the Rubies helmet is kind of ******, but its all i got atm. Well, i fixed it with an specific type of silicon putty on the inside and bondo on the outside. The inside i strenghtend with plastic mesh which worked really good. I already sanded the outside and cut out the pvc plates (its the german equivalent for sintra)for my armor based on WOFs templates. Saturday i´m going to bend them in shape and prime all parts :D Thanks for the advice all of you!

OK, the basic repair is done, so that in the next days i can sand and prime the bucket and cut out the visor the right way. Armor for the upper body is ready to get shaped. The armor is, like i said, based on WOFs templates, except for an custom designed 2-piece collar armor. Belt is ready to get primed. Do you think its too stormtrooper-ish? Maybe i´m going to modify it somehow, but i´m not sure which way (any suggestions?). Enclosed also some pics of my weapon, which has to be sanded again and repainted...

Helmet and armor are going to Be in a Silk-matt red over a grey overall and black vest. I have a little Problem to find a good vest and i'm thinking about making one myself. Or can someone tell where to find One from an European or German Dealer?

Here´s my bucket fresh after priming. Looks like brand new compared to what it looked like at first. Also bought an beige/olive flight suit of the german Bundeswehr.

I´d like to make this my WIP Thread. Is it possible to change the Thread name?

You need to get a craft ring into that helmet, it looks a little squashed, it needs to be rounded out.

Yeah, i thought so, too! Looks a little bit slim, but i´m going to round it somehow. What is a craft ring?

basicially, a metal band. Others can explain it better though...

You can find them at craft stores pretty much anywhere. It's a metal ring for general crafts. I hear that Dreamcatcher rings work well. Basically you cut it in half, and stick it in the back half or 3/4 of your bucket. It forces the plastic (or whatever material you've got) to keep a wider shape, so it's less flexible.

Something like this should work, depending on what size your helmet is...

Ah ok thanks...Couldn´t find something like this here in my town in Germany. but some guys at the MM Forum said I should use the bail of an standard 10l bucket. I´m going to try this...

In the meantime i could finally shape my upper body armor (had to wait till i got a heatgun)...

Yeah i wanted to be one part to be a little bit different from the usual BF type armor. Now i´m considering to place something between the gap of the two collar armor parts, but i haven´t got a clue yet...

Maybe a strip between them so you still have mobility but not such a big gap? Something around an inch wide would look good.

OK, my upper body armor is finished. At first I was really displeased with the color after the basic painting, but after weathering I think it looks pretty cool. I know its parsecs away from Mercs-Standard, but this is my first costume ever and i´m kinda satisfied with my work so far. Also I painted the first coat of paint on the bucket (which still nedds to be rounded out, i know).

So...let me know what you think (please be kind ;) )

Thanks, feels good to hear that. Maybe i can do the Red painting on the helmet tomorrow. Need to start with the gauntlets und the lower Body armor. I also bought one these wristbands for my iPod touch which i want to use like an communication terminal or something like that.

OK, little update: Shin armor and gauntlets ready (right one up to 80%). On my left gauntlet i have a pocket for my Ipod Touch to use it as kind of communication pad or whatever ;) Weapon resanded and repainted. I´m going to load some pics up on Friday. Tomorrow i have to work all day and at night i´m on a Dropkick Murphys concert :cheering

Helmet is finished except for the visor! Weapon needs some finishing (details, weathering). I´ll get the visor on monday, so that i hopefully can upload pics of the fully finished bucket (including rangefinder) on tuesday ;)

Thanks vod! On thursday everything has to be ready and still some things to do: Coloring the flight suit, attaching armor on vest, weapon has to be finished. Well, you can sleep when you´re dead, right? ;)

That's right! Pain is just weakness leaving the body.

Ok, everything is basicallly finished! I´m not 100% satisfied but all in all quite pleased with the result. For today i post 2 pictures of the helmet. Don´t be confused by the colors, the bucket is looking sort of pink, but at the previous pics you see the red as it is in natural.The helmet is still not perfect symetrical, but it´s the best i could get done in a short time and with little financial resources. Tomorrow i will post a pic of me fully suited :D

Thanks vod! Yeah it´s iridescent. It isn´t so good to see on the pics, but when the light falls on the visor it looks like oil shimmering in water (if you know what i mean). It was more a coincidence. I bought an motorbikehelmet-visor on ebay and it turned out, that it was not black. I think it´s really cool!
