WIP: Custom Armor

Duran Lomax

Active Hunter
Well, this is what it looks like so far, unpainted, and missing the vest and guantlets. I finally bought the helmet yesterday at Disneyland (Rubies, $60), though it still needs work (such as a BobaMaker Visor). The blue marks on the chest, stomach, collar, and shoulder armor are battle-damage concepts.
The jumpsuit looks a bit wide due to the fact that it's spread flat on the floor, and the codpiece needs to be finished.

Anyway, this is the first set I've tried to make. Comments and advice is always welcome :)

Looks like a great start, don't forget to add a neckseal and backplate to your shopping list of parts. What colours are you planning on painting it?

A good start and with respect, has many areas to focus on.

My best advice would be to slow down at this point and concentrate on an element at a time, while still considering the entire journey.

I would suggest starting at the neck, and work down through your chest plates. This is a good place to experiment with shaping and sizing yourself up. Work the angles shoulders to core and back out down the ribs. Pay attention to the shape of your own chest specifically. Pay attention to the spacing when on you.

The backplate is sittin pretty in the next room, but it still needs alot of work (shaping). A neckseal is something I hadnt thought of, though; thanks for pointing it out :)
The color scheme I plan on using would be the same as the guy in my signature (Jodo Kast, digitally colored in photoshop by me); orange, grey, and black.

I'll admit, I've been getting in a bit of a hurry; Im really excited about this costume, but at the same time, I want it done now. Impatience has always been a weakness of mine :p
Most of the torso plates are already shaped to fit over my chest nicely (Im a slim dude). Ive mapped them out roughly across my chest to measure spacing, and they don't look half bad; of course, I'll have to wait for an actual vest before the green light is actually given. The piece Im having the most trouble with is the collar armor; the one which is supposed to connect to the backplate. The little snot doesn't want to cooperate :p

Are you going to make the belt accessorys on Jodo as well? I'd love to see some more of these made.(y)

I was thinking about it, and I won't be making them. At least, not immediately; my main goal is to get the costume and weaponry finished, then I can add the bells and whistles. I also might just modify them to look entirely different; there's going to be a holster on my right thigh, so one of the devices will probably have to go.

BF03..

So you like my colors eh?

Great choice!!!

I second what Shockwave said. Concentrate on your helmet first. It speaks volumes for the rest of the costume.

Only the orange, which is a tribute to my old Jedi character, who had an orange lightsaber :p

The helmet, definately; I need to slap a harness inside so it doesnt slip around so much, as well as the new visor. It'll definately be interesting, to say the least. Where's the best place to pick up one of those harness things, anyway?

After painting, stripping, and repainting about three times, I think I've finally got something I like. This is just the base color; the visor still needs to be colored, but I have some "damage" in there.

Did you go with a gloss black? I would reccomend a flat black, or a matte finish clear coat, because after years of damage your helmet wouldn't still be so shiney. Also go back over those scratches with topical damge in say a grey or gunmetal color. Right now they don't look too authenic.

My two cents

Yea, I used a glossy black; I have Krylon's matte finish, which Im going to use on the entire helmet once the visor border is painted.
The scratches are actually a lot darker in person; my flash is notorious for making things brighter than they actually are. But I'll definately go over them with a darker grey.

Nah, that's the helmet; it's a Rubies Jango, and subject to warping easily. It spread out a bit due to the fact that I screwed up in trying to place a shaper inside of it; it didnt stick, so all I have to do is stick fix the shaper, then slap it in the garage for a few hours.

may i sugest heating it up?... i don't own a rubies but i asume if yea out it in the oven for a little it becomes bendable..... it should save the pimp hand, unless you want to get it stronger

How would I fiberglass the inside? I'm no veteran with this kind of thing; it's actually my first serious venture into Star Wars costuming.

I recieved my gauntlets the other day:

i used a fiberglass kit from an auto parts store, it was really easy and came with everything you need to do a whole helmet and then some and was only about $15
