    VariablePenguin: Custom Mando - Domino

Here's a concept for the Mando I'm starting.
I was originally going to go straight up Boba, but with all the known info about his suit, I'd never make a perfect suit. So original idea it is!

    domino..jpg

I'm going for a sort of Western Gambler look. Will have dual blasters that will holter under the armpits beneath the coat. Will also have wrist blades.

Here's a concept for the blasters I'm going to use based on NES Zappers.

    zapper..jpg

I'll possibly add a scope to the rear and definately some sort of extra random parts on the body to make it look less toy-like.

Wasn't going to start on this until later, but I've been kind of burnt out on the figures I'm working on and felt like a change. Using the brilliant trash can idea. Got a Sterilite at Wallyworld and use WOF's awesome templates to cut these parts out. Thinking about adding a blade to the design that will retract into one or both of the gauntlets ala Kroenen from Hellboy. Will probably use the trash can again for that. Would have the rest (shoulders, neck, crotch) cut too, but I broke my utility knife earlier today on something else and had to do with kitchen scissors.

nice! I had a mixture of DREMEL and tin snips, and since my hands are small and the tin snips are bigger than I need I did not do a very good job. YAY FOR SANDERS!

I would have used my Dremel, but it was like 11:30 at night when I started and I didn't want to wake up the lady that lives below me. Man, using scissors on this stuff is not a good idea. It really wrecked the heck out of my right hand. It feels like when I first started making chain maille way back when. I got pretty clean lines though. I'll just have to go back with the Dremel and clean up the edges and cut out that middle rectangle of the diamond and the light holes on the chest. Oh and do damage.

I have 2 of the three colors I need (silver and grey). I'll probably snag some black tonight and paint when the weather gets back to normal here.

Also just did a quick mock up of damage placement.

I'm not breaking anything. At most, there will be a dent on the collar and chest parts and some scratches Dremelled in. what might look like a broken part is actually where it will be weathered down to the silver base coat. Sorry about the cruddy images, I only have access to MS Paint here at work and I've gotten lousy with it over time.

    Bestbuyuniforms.com
Just search for "coveralls" when you get there. I got the Coveralls - 65/35% Poly/Cotton Heavyweight in White, but they have them in Navy, Spruce Green, Postman Blue, and Shell Brown too. They also have a set of Bright Orange ones for $19.95 that I could totally see someone using as a Rebel pilot or Bossk.

I have been looking for decently priced coveralls for almost a year now and this is the best that I have found.

Re: VariablePenguin: Custom Mando - Domino

Got cod piece, butt plate and collar out of the rest of the trash can.
    armor03..jpg
I bent the cod armor with some boiling water, but when i tried that on the collar, I came back today and it had returned to it's orginal shape. So I tried the oven...
But, will have to redo the collar because I stepped away for too long and this happened:
    oops..jpg

    So... lesson learned
Will have to do the shoulders, collar, and back from another can.

Anyone have a suggested temperature to set the oven to to heat this stuff up? I had it at 350 I think.

For the boiling water did you dip it in cold water right after?

I guess I didn't come to think of it. I did with the cod, so that explains why it held.

Here's one half of my one of my painted blasters. Decided to go with a silver trigger instead of black like in the mock up I did. Sanded off the Nintendo mark and sprayed away. Haven't decided if I'll put something in it yet. Maybe a laser pointer inside controlled by the trigger? I'll need to decide that before I finish it up because I plan on filling in all the screw holes with Apoxie Sculpt.

Action shot of the two painted up and ready to roll. Also the gloves I'll be using for the costume. Franklin batting gloves with MLB logo sanded off straps and Franklin logo destitched off.

I've got some decals I'll be putting on the blasters on the way also. They'll say "Domino's Blaster" in Mando'a

Yeah, I was thinking about that, but pondering if I might put a light or laser or something in there.

Or (if you want) you can buy a cheap hasbro blaster with light and sound take it apart and put it in yours and then it'll be even better, just a thought.

Cool idea. But I decided to just go without light and sound. I sculpted over the screw holes. I'll post some pics tomorrow after I paint over the Apoxie Sculpt and show off the job I did on the armor I have so far.

Armor paint. Will have to go over some areas where the silver got rubbed off when I was removing my masking (tooth paste). Also waiting on a decal to put on the left piece.

Didn't feel like finishing blasters today.

Blargh! My paint reacted weird on the black parts of the gun and became all textured and wrinkley. I think it was the sudden temperature change the other day. I sanded it down to the plastic and it looks better now. I also had a mishap when I went to lightly mist the rest of the gun with black and some big drops fell on it. Hopefully I can fix that all.

Got my jumpsuits dyed. Used 2 pkgs Rit Pearl Grey powder and did both at the same time.
Not as dark as I was hoping for, but pretty much the exact color on the box, so I don't know what I was expecting. It'll do nicely I'm sure. Now I just have to sew one with short sleeves, put the other's sleeves inside and then do the pouches and spats from the cannibalized one.

Re: VariablePenguin: Custom Mando - Domino

    Chest and belly armor done!
Touched up areas where black paint didn't stick and where the silver had rubbed off when I was removing the masking toothpaste. Also added Mando Skull (bantha? mythosaur? something an artist made up?) and "weathered" it. Dremeled in the scratches. Dent was made by heating the chest plate and applying pressure using the corner of my counter top and repeated. Sealed with Plaid Matte Acrylic Sealer.

    armor05..jpg

Tip: make sure you have the light holes cut before you paint, the bending from cutting them out might chip your paint off. I had to repaint a fist sized portion surrounding the holes.

Man that is awesome! I did not think about using the dremel to make the scratches.

Re: VariablePenguin: Custom Mando - Domino

The Dremel is like the most awesome tool you can own. I used a cutting disk (lightly) to achieve my deep scratches. Just make sure you don't bend it (the armor) too much after or your it will break at those points. The deep scratch/dent in the middle I used Dremel and counter top corner pressure to achieve.

Oh and I cut the chest light holes out with an exacto knife. Dremels tend to melt this kind of plastic (as you know AA)

Got these pouches in today. I've got 4, but I think I'll only use 3 because they go around awfully far and one is really dark.
