    Starting a scratchbuilt

A possible idea for a bucket.
I have decided to build this fella in steel.
My ingredients are assembled - a ww2 Tommy helmet for my dome, A 35 year old clothes dryer for some sheet steel, some carbon/kevlar, plus some previous experience making many things from nothing... Hell I'm more than ready!!!
My background in knife and sword making, composite race car seat manufacturer, leather restoration and working, combined with plenty of other time wasting occupations, I'm hoping, will assist in creating something worth posting for you guys.
Please peruse and tell me what you think.

More posts to come very, very soon

    Re: Starting a scratchbuilt

A few pics of where I am now.

Tommy helmet de-rimmed, templates cut from sheet steel, all held together with fibreglass, carbon/ kevlar and rivets.

Pretty rough at the moment, but put together pretty quickly.

I've made the cheeks higher and extended the mandibles.

A few other changes are there too.

    Many thanks guys,
Thanks Cade, photobucket did the trick

Ijaat Ka'rta, I honestly didn't know if it would work at first,
but I thought if you could make a helmet from cardboard or various plastics I thought steel should work.

Using the old ww2 helmet was my way of using steel all over.

Here are some updates of my bucket.

Note: I've made my weathering pretty extreme.

Sorry to be a man of few words, but if anyone has any questions, please ask.

My visor arrives next week so all visor activity is temporary.

For some reason I have left everything at the rear of the helmet for last.

    No worries, I'll get there.

    Sorry for the blurry pics.

Okay guys, people who know me are not surprised with me changing things as I go,

Think of my previous pics as sketches, leading to something I'm going to be happy with.

I've started working on the rear of the helmet, ( if any one has seen my previous posts, they will know I wanted to build my interpretation of Rohlan Dyre's armour).

Hey, you never Know I may just ditch my own designs and decide to do just that.

Please look at the pics and tell me what you think.

    Re: Starting a scratchbuilt

I was thinking of building a Beskad to help arm my mando.
Karen Traviss describes a particular Beskad in LOTF Revelation (page 173).

I've never really seen a pic of one which has captured my imagination, but hearing it described as 45 cm long, 5-6 cm wide and probably one - handed, I thought something like this would be suitable:

This is a Bowie knife I'm working on at the moment, but with a bit of eye squinting, you will see what I have in mind.

I would start from scratch but I felt like showing a pic of something.

I've got a few more pics here guys.

Note the colours are not what I'm going with but having an airbrush in hand most of my day I can't resist blowing a little black over it.

Heaps of sanding and finishing to go if anyone was wondering.

    Re: Starting a scratchbuilt

Don't wanna pull the focus off your bucket, but you mentioned the bowie for a beskad... The beskad is one of those recent things that people haven't put into print or video yet, so there's a lot of latitude there. I've been working on a few designs, and they're much more like yours than the way they're described by Traviss. Several variants use a straight blade--almost like a katana--considerably longer than the description in the novel. From Traviss' description, and the way it's used, I've always thought she was thinking of something akin to a cutlass. However, when I think of a Mandalorian blade, I think of the one used in a panel of the graphic novel Open Seasons by a Deathwatch soldier (I know--not Mandalorian, then, but darned close); and the one used by Boba Fett in another graphic novel, STAR WARS: Underworld, The Yavin Vassilika. And then, of course, there's the 300 version of the spartan sword--there's a blade with personality. Each of these have the different blade look like your bowie. Personally, I think someone covered in armor fighting someone covered in armor would be more likely to use something more like a stiletto or a war hammer, something with a long, thin element that could be thrust between plates. I'd be happy to continue to discuss this through pms, or here, if you don't find it too off-topic.

I think designing a beskad saber off a bowie could look really cool. You definatly have room to fiddle around with it. Like has been said there is no standard for a beskad. It is a saber though, so that gives us a hint on to general length and basic shape. Have at it!

    Re: Starting a scratchbuilt

    K. Below are the images I was talking about. They're an image of the 300 sword, a similar knife from a knife catalog, a blade used by Boba Fett in a graphic novel, and a Deathwatch soldier brandishing another beskad-like weapon in Open Seasons. They all have the similar look to the bowie you posted. I think it's an interesting take on a blade's shape. Heck, a sword carried by one of the orcs in The Two Towers movie and Tom Brown's tracker have similar profiles, and make them more unique than the simple single curved blade. In the book, the beskad is described, if I remember correctly, as a weapon that can be used also like a hammer, to pound on your opponent; I'm just wondering if that's a likely weapon for a Mandalorian. Still plan on making some, of course, with designs similar to these.

Hopefully, I'll do the attachments properly--it's been a long time.

Sorry it has taken so long to post a reply.

My `weathering method' is the `paint it with about 8 coats of various colours, because I couldn't make up my mind, then scratch it of with a screwdriver' method.

Dont mean to sound like a smart@$$ but I am carefully making this up as I go along.

Amazing job! Any insight on how you go about the templates for making something like this? I know if I tried this, it'd end up looking like something out of a Picasso painting.

    Re: Starting a scratchbuilt

    Many, many thanks my Mandalore.

I have some new pics here of my armour, ( very much WIP, but here they are.)
All are steel, carbon/ kevlar composite.

Also a couple of pics of my blaster.

There is a bit of creative history regarding my blaster.....,

My boss' wife is an award winming costume designer and has a bit to do with Weta workshop.
My boss really likes Weta's new line of `Flash Gordon' style rayguns and decided, as a challenge, my blaster should follow along those lines.
I've given it a go ( bear in mind this is still a WIP)
This blaster was built using the Rubies Jango blasters, also, the sound effects still work.

Now another theory I've been working with is an armour package consisting of past family members plates wouldn't necessarily be the same shape.
Surmising these armour pieces could have come from many different time periods I have decide to create armour plates that reflect this.

My visor uses the sandwiched method ( plastic/ tinting/ plastic), It is sitting loose in my bucket at the moment.

Oh I like the hand me down beskar look! It has history, and thats something most kits don't have.

Your kit would also make a serious Crusader era mando, no doubt. There's alot of familiarity with that helmet style and some crusader helmets.

I have this arriving in a couple of days. If anything looks like it belongs in the Star Wars universe,
    it's this crossbow stock.
The top pic is what I am getting, the bottom pic is Chewie's bowcaster.

A quick question. A projectile weapon like a verpine shoots solid things right? Does it need to be loaded
with a `shell' or is it loaded like an old fashioned blunderbust by ramming it all home.

That helmet is amazing, it has a real used an abused look, plus its shape is almost bird like, very slick.

the bowcaster shoots explosive quarrals, which are loaded in much like a crossbow bolt would be, and you can either draw back the bolt manually or there are models that do it automatically. however, i believe the one chewie uses in the movie was modified to shoot blaster bolts, just like an E-11 or some other blaster rifle

A verpine is more along the lines of a modern sniper rifle.

    Re: Starting a scratchbuilt

I got my crossbow stock today, fantastic.
It's pretty heavy, feels like solid aluminium covered in plastic.
I don't plan to make a bowcaster, instead modifying it into by blaster rifle.
Don't worry guys, all my modification will be cosmetic in nature to keep this beauty intact.
I was originally looking for any old rifle stock for my main weapon and stumbled upon this.
I bought this on Trademe, ( an auction site here in New Zealand) for
    $30, great score.

Here are some pics of my modified crossbow, consisting of heatgun parts, $20 scope and some old Falcon model parts.
    Still a WIP.

DUDE! This is just wickedly sick! I totally missed this. I like how the visor doesn't come all the way to the bottom of the mandibles. Almost has a fang-like feel. That blaster is sweet too. Just curious though, how much does that bucket weigh?

Now that's looking four shades of awesome!

Though you might have serious law enforcement issues holding that in public!
