Starting a scratchbuilt

I've got a few more pics here guys.

Note the colours are not what I'm going with but having an airbrush in hand most of my day I can't resist blowing a little black over it.

Heaps of sanding and finishing to go if anyone was wondering.

Don't wanna pull the focus off your bucket, but you mentioned the bowie for a beskad... The beskad is one of those recent things that people haven't put into print or video yet, so there's a lot of latitude there. I've been working on a few designs, and they're much more like yours than the way they're described by Traviss. Several variants use a straight blade--almost like a katana--considerably longer than the description in the novel. From Traviss' description, and the way it's used, I've always thought she was thinking of something akin to a cutlass. However, when I think of a Mandalorian blade, I think of the one used in a panel of the graphic novel Open Seasons by a Deathwatch soldier (I know--not Mandalorian, then, but darned close); and the one used by Boba Fett in another graphic novel, STAR WARS: Underworld, The Yavin Vassilika. And then, of course, there's the 300 version of the spartan sword--there's a blade with personality. Each of these have the different blade look like your bowie. Personally, I think someone covered in armor fighting someone covered in armor would be more likely to use something more like a stiletto or a war hammer, something with a long, thin element that could be thrust between plates. I'd be happy to continue to discuss this through pms, or here, if you don't find it too off-topic.

I think designing a beskad saber off a bowie could look really cool. You definatly have room to fiddle around with it. Like has been said there is no standard for a beskad. It is a saber though, so that gives us a hint on to general length and basic shape. Have at it!

K. Below are the images I was talking about. They're an image of the 300 sword, a similar knife from a knife catalog, a blade used by Boba Fett in a graphic novel, and a Deathwatch soldier brandishing another beskad-like weapon in Open Seasons. They all have the similar look to the bowie you posted. I think it's an interesting take on a blade's shape. Heck, a sword carried by one of the orcs in The Two Towers movie and Tom Brown's tracker have similar profiles, and make them more unique than the simple single curved blade. In the book, the beskad is described, if I remember correctly, as a weapon that can be used also like a hammer, to pound on your opponent; I'm just wondering if that's a likely weapon for a Mandalorian. Still plan on making some, of course, with designs similar to these.

Hopefully, I'll do the attachments properly--it's been a long time.

Sorry it has taken so long to post a reply.

My `weathering method' is the `paint it with about 8 coats of various colours, because I couldn't make up my mind, then scratch it of with a screwdriver' method.

Dont mean to sound like a smart@$$ but I am carefully making this up as I go along.

That is quite possibly the coolest helmet.....like, ever.

Amazing job! Any insight on how you go about the templates for making something like this? I know if I tried this, it'd end up looking like something out of a Picasso painting.
