Second Time Mando Helmet (Custom)

Second Time Mando Helmet (Custom)

I am currently in the process of making my second Mandalorian helmet. My first one didn't turn out very well at all, as you might have seen by my previous Avatar, but I at least learned from my mistakes, and I'm hoping that this one turns out a lot better. This one will be mostly made out of 2.5mm thick sheet metal (which is a bear to work with!) and the only real custom part of it is that I'm planning on putting a fin of sorts on top, which will be based on ideas that I get from the Republic ARC trooper helmet. I'll be uploading photos soon, so any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, and I almost forgot: I'm also working on my first set of Mandalorian armor. Here's a picture or two.

Sorry about the bad quality. I had to trim the pictures so the file size would be small enought to upload them.

Looks like there's some rust on them plates, are you going to treat them?

Re: Second Time Mando Helmet (Custom)

Actually, I already scrubbed them with WD-40, since they were a lot more rusty than they are now. There's actually a lot of "cuts" in the metal from where the rust was, but yes, I'm going to treat them again.

By the way, I'm building the helmet based on a tutorial I found at this website:http://www.darksidesithlord.com/my-c...eation-01.html Should have those photos by tomorrow.

It'll probably be a little while longer before I have any picture-worthy progress done: the army helmet which I'm using as the dome hasn't come yet, and I don't want to permanently attach anything until I know it's all going to fit together just right.

Re: Second Time Mando Helmet (Custom)

Well, THAT took a while. Here's the link to some pictures: http://myshenanagins.webs.com/mandalorianhelmet.htm It doesn't look like I've gotten very far, but considering how hard it is to cut and bend the metal that I'm using, I'd like to think that I've gotten pretty far. The cheekbones are getting bent into shape right now (I wanted to have the rest together before I did that), and the visor is only going to be cut out now, since it bends better with the front still as one piece. Now I need to make and attach dual antennaes, and make a fin for the top: I'm trying to make my helmet sort of like that of the Republic ARC troopers, since I've always been a big fan of them. And yes, I will get rid of the Gorilla glue before too long, and I will scrub it with WD-40. PS: Is it just me, or is the dome too big? I can cut it if it is, but I'd like to have some other opinions. Any and all tips/ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hey man I am very new to this but I am also building a metal helmet. Yours looks like a very good start. The dome does look too tall to me. The dome should be about 1/3 as tall as the face of the helmet, at least that's what I figured from looking at the reference pics. how are you attaching the pieces? glue? epoxy? rivets? or do you have access to any welding equipment? I don't know how much help it will be but you can check out my WIP thread http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showt...y-First-Helmet. I look forward to seeing your progress. Good luck.

Joe: So far, I've used pop rivets and Gorilla Glue, and I'm either going to weld or use epoxy to attach the other parts. BTW, I really like the dome you made, since I can appreciate how annoying it can be to try and make something like that out of metal. If you ever want to make one to sell, let me know .

Man, has it really been two months since my last update? Either I'm a lot lazier than I thought I was, or I'm now an official procrastinator. Anyway, you can use the same link to get to my progress. It's not as much as I would have liked, but there was probably an entire 4 weeks where I didn't get anything done due to the preparation for, and beginning of, school. I'm currently updating that website even as I type, so if you happen to click on the link within an hour or two after I post this, you might not see the progress yet. With all that said, I look forward to seeing your advice/tips/suggestions.

UPDATED:
Mostly, I just finished the dome itself: the fin and 'tubing' that I'm planning on putting on top have yet to be done, but I'll probably do the visor next, actually. Either way, expect another update soon. Here's the link again, the updates begin about halfway down the page:Mandalorian Helmet - My Shenanagins!

UPDATED:
Well, it ain't much, but I got the visor done. I don't think the fin and tubing will take too long, so I should update again in a week or two. Once again, I welcome any suggestions or ideas, so feel free to post if you have any. Same link, updates start at the bottom of the page.

Sorry, I had a little uploading trouble, so I atually ended up putting everything on a different page, on the same website. Here's the new link:Mandalorian Helmet - 2 - My Shenanagins!

Re: Second Time Mando Helmet (Custom)

Updated!!! 2/7/11 Well, I got the fin done, and put the tube stuff on. This is the part where I really need a second opinion, because I kind of like the idea of the tubes on it, I'm just not sure if I did it right. So any suggestions are welcomed. Oh, and I think my computer finally stopped being stubborn so now I can upload photos straight to here!

Great job ner vod. Kandosii. I'm new to the boards but admire the craftsmanship. I think the hose doesn't really flow with the fin to well though. I think maybe just painting a stripe and the fin yellow might look better. Just an idea. Great build.

i really like those chest plates just they way they are. no paint, bruised and pitted. it's a very raw and battle worn look. i can't say that i'm a fan of the fin on the helmet though. though a mohawk of the tubing might look good.

Kandosii! Great work, ner vod. Quick question: when you cut the sheet metal, did you use a bandsaw? Or did you do it by hand with a hacksaw? Just curious...got a little experience working with sheet aluminum, but nothing that thick.

Re: Second Time Mando Helmet (Custom)

Okay, so I'm hearing I should either lose the tubing entirely and just have the fin, or lose the fin and just have like a tube mowhawk. Well, I like the idea of a tube mowhawk, but I feel like the hose stuff I'm using wouldn't look right alone, so I guess I'll lose that and just have the fin. I ought'a have some more progress soon along those lines, so thanks for the suggestions Carud and Saint_nasty!

Mando.wannabe: I actually used an angle grinder to cut it out. I tried doing it with a sawzall, but I could'nt cut accurately enough, and other than the angle grinder my only other option was a torch, which I have no experience with. An angle grinder is actually ideal for this type of metal, because it's too thick for any type of saw to work well with, but it's thin enough that you can actually do some pretty good quality curves.

Re: Second Time Mando Helmet (Custom)

Once again, I'm sorry this took so long, but the rangefinder has been the hardest part of this project for me so far, since it's just about the only thing I've never done before at all. Anyway, I decided to make the randefinder a lot wider than it is on Boba Fett's, since recently I was playing the game "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter", where I noticed Jango's rangefinder looks relatively wide there, and I thought it looked cool. The only thing I noticed on my helmet was that I seem to have made the part below the actual rangefinder (I don't know what to call it) in a way that makes it stick out less than it's supposed to, so it seems to make the rest look bigger than it is. So yeah, I also have some pictures from the game to show you what I'm talking about. And I never have gotten around to taking off that yellow tube stuff, but I will before to long, just so you know. As always, any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.
