Saz custom build #1 Krayt dragon

Me again!

Now I have finished the Master bucket I will be making a couple to keep as master copies for further projects. I will be slowly improving on my initial design but first I will be working on an idea I've had for a while.

I enjoy making buckets, that I have found out, I have always had the intention of making limited run art pieces based on the Mandalorian helmet and this one is probably my coolest design.

I've been learning Japanese for a while now, I'm kind of at kindergarten level with it, but I am strongly influenced by the culture and I thought what would be cool is to make a bucket with a Japanese dragon on it.

"But" I thought, "it's not very starwars!".

So I looked in my little dictionary and found the Krayt Dragon, looked on the net, found a few visual references and came up with the following design.



I used the mando maker to help me get the base look of the helmet, so props to that tool.

I also did a 3-d representation of what it would look like in pen:



I will be making only 10 of these art pieces and I will collect names on a first come first serve basis when I run out of room in my house and I am forced to sell them.

I like the idea of only 10 people in the world having the design

Once I get my new resin in I will cast me off a helmet and begin the design.

Looks awesome!

I've been toying with the idea of having Star Wars creatures on my bucket, but I don't think I have the skill required, having tried it myself once.

Can't wait to see it done, and I'd be happy to own one!

Hey! keep me in mind here! I couldn't get one for at least a few months (wedding kind of saps the financial resources, y'know), but I REALLY like the dragon.

Since she didn't I'll ask: How much you asking for these? I'd love one too.

Wow amazing helmet. That looks really sweet.

When I am forced to sell them (due to space and money constraints) I'll be looking at about £100 plus any postage (and insurance if you choose it), as I will not go further than 10 versions, so they'll be pretty exclusive.

Of course, I have to build the master first and I need to get my resin to cast out a few copies of the master.

£100 for this?! *picks up jaw from keyboard* wow! That's pretty cheap considering (note: this isnt an excuse to raise the price xD)

Depending on costs it will be around that mark, I enjoy doing it and I think I will get great enjoyment looking on TDH, seeing some guy or gal at a convention wearing a helmet that I made.

I have always aimed it at the "Don't want 100% accurate, I want affordable" market as there are so many great makers in the accurate area and not everyone wants a Boba or Jango or want to build their own.

I think it's more valuable to me to see people enjoy my creations, that's just the way I am I guess

As fate would have it, I made a bucket that was too thin at the ends to sell, so I have primered it and will be drawing on the picture to the side of the bucket sometime soon. I am still working on things for the normal bucket pieces though first.

Started on the sketch to get the basic shape sorted, just cause I was sitting around with little to do.

Ohhh...very nice!!! How are you going to do the dragon?

Build up a basic shape with car body filler and once the shape is about right, I'll begin to carve it back.

Amazing! Did you free hand that drawing of the krayt? Nice job there! I'm really interested to see how this goes. I'm also still toying with the idea of doing a whole armor set on this... If I have money to buy the helmet. But I can still do the armor with a still krayt dragon helm, just my own version. *I call dibs on making a full armor set!!*

I did it freehand with pencil, makes it easier to rub out mistakes

It's going to be a challenge as I have to work out foreground and background and build up from there, as the krayt will be 3 dimensional.

I'm really impressed with your know-how and grit in making these helmets, Saz. Did you figure out how to do most of this from a job or school, or just on your own?

I did a degree in computer aided product design and had a uni workshop to do things like vacuum forming, I also did a degree in Graphic Design, so those help. But most was using reference and I built a lot of paper and card prototypes to get my measurements right.

The rest is researching the processes on the internet and in libraries.

I also have made a few masks for some of my wrestlers and I built my own stormtrooper as well, for my own nefarious purposes as shown below:

Just like DAZ did for the face casts of Jeremy for us.
That way no recasters.

There's a bit of interest in this, but I've seen what happens when someone organises something and doesn't pull through due to real life constraints. So what I'll do is put up the list when I have the items cast and ready to ship.

That's how I work, I won't ask anyone for money unless I am sure I can pop it in the post within a couple of days.

I will be putting in a "Security tag" into my items, so people will know it's my work, basically, I'll be etching saz and its number in mando'a on the ear and also placing a SAZ logo as per my avatar on the inside.

Though it's tough having someone else taking credit for your work, in the end, we're all working around one man's vision, so perhaps my intentions are to provide the Mando variant community with an affordable quality alternative and theirs isn't, I'm sure the Mando community will be vigilant against that sort of person.

I'm looking at about £100 plus postage, as long as my costs are covered that shouldn't go up at all.

Got A'den's bucket sorted this morning in the rain.

I also got started on the Krayt bucket as I had little else to do but wait for the RF mold to set, so I've been working hard on it.

I have to say, it's surprised me how quickly this has come together, there are little changes here and there, but I think it's really starting to take some shape.

Like I said, I'm really shocked how quickly this is starting to come together, I hope I can get the bucket finished before I go on holiday, though the detail may take serious time.

I'm quite excited about this build!

Do I see some sort of knot work pattern on the far mandible?

Yeah, that was me testing out another of my ideas to see if it could work.

Is that your only japanese influence? if you have a normal suit, normal weapons, etc., then the dragon would look out of place... but still! good job!

Not really my concern, I'm making an art piece out of the helmet, the beskar'gam (nearly getting the terms now guys) is really a personal choice for each mando, the helmet is there so it's up to the buyer to link it together.

Don't worry about saving up money, I need to sell a few normal helmets first to recoup the costs of making that, I'm also on holiday and then there's the set up, mold and build time, so we're talking about 3 months or so till completion of #1 I reckon.

I'll be sitting down with the bucket tonight and working on getting some more done. Pictures later.

3 months, perfect... I can catch up on my bills, and save the money..

nomad, are you referring to the celtic knot pattern on the mandable? Caus I like that too... I think it would be really cool to put that on there too.
