    Aug 24, 2008, 10:39 PM - rubies helmet issues... #1

    hello all

i just got my rubies jango helmet to start my custom mando and the rangefinder stalk isnt very sturdy and it moves around and wont stay upright. it also sits lower than it should when lowered. i would like to be able to lower and raise it but im not sure how to go about fixing it without making stationary. any ideas?

will a t-visor from t-visor.com fit it? or can i just make one?...so many questions. sorry about that..

any info on working with this thing in general would be a great help.

Yes, the basic t-visor from t-visor.com will work with a rubies. I just put one in a helmet on Saturday and didn't even need to cut it to fit.

As for the RF. Pop off the ear cap and wrap a little duck tape around the piece that slides into the RF stalk hole. That should give you plenty of friction so that RF stays up but lets you pull it down.

Yep, just be easy with it when your prying it off. Get a flat head screwdriver and go to it. =)

i drilled a hole through the helmet and put a screw into the rangefinder
cap from the inside which makes the rangefinder easy to remove plus
the rangefinder stays up or down at the right place
i can post pics if you like

I use industrial strength velcro (soft side) inside of sliding pieces (earcap).

It has give, sticks well, and doesnt scratch things up while applying pressure.

A little tab of that make sthe rangefinder slide smooth, but tight.

    thanks for the advice!

pics would be cool if its not a bother. i used the duct tape but i suspect that i might need a more permanent solution at some point. i just superglued the earpiece back on, but im not sure how thats gonna hold up.

    flaws ive noticed:
    1. flimsy
    2. the shape is kind of off
    3. rangefinder wont stay where i want (but i fixed that)

    you will need:
    1. padding (baseball helmet padding works) to keep it secure on your head. you could use the thing they put in military helmets too.
    2. new visor
    3. patience
....other stuff is up to you...lol

if you have the dough go with a better one...

but...hard work never hurt anyone. so if your on a budget, you could tough it out.

You also need to reform the rubies a bit if you want it to have the wide flair of a standard mando helmet. Miss Fett, if your at DragonCon this week you can stop by the Mercs table and I'll show you how you can use a craft ring to give it a nice shape.

Well, since you live in GA you should make it a point to go to DCon one year. It's a lot of everything honestly. I don't wanna take away from your thread talking about it, but it's probably the biggest Star Wars event also on the east coast outside of Disney.

Here are 2 tutorials on the Mercs site. One for installing the ring, the next is a method for reshaping without putting the ring in.

    Craft Ring

    No Ring

first take off your rangefinder and cap then find a screw the right size
to small/short and it won't grip to big/long and it will split the rangefinder cap
then drill a hole slightly smaller than your screw right in the middle of the slight depression in the helmet, it should look like this

then attach the RF and cap and screw through from the inside of your helmet

here's a picture of the inside of my helmet with a sort of cap to stop it sliding about on my head

    hope that helps
BTW sorry for the blurry pics

a rubies wont be the most ideal one.

but its great for a budget, and makes perfect practise for the coming bucket.

anything with lotws of effort can be made good.

show more WIP pics, i am sure u will get loads of advise out here~

ehh. its not great...its so bendy! and warped! and the keyhole section on the back of the bucket is off about 1/4 or 1/2 of an inch offcenter! not sure what to do about that....but instead of b****in about it...im going to make this thing as amazing as possible . there will be pictures no doubt.

thanks everyone for the awesome advice so far!
