Roki's Armor Thread (armor 85% finished!)

This'll basicly be the thread i post everything in.. obviously.

Here's the bit so far. Only thing i've got finished so far is the gun, and i've got my gloves. MS Custom helmet is on the way (thanks MS !!! :thumbup:thumbup). I'll be doing a 'heavy' Mando. Almost like Jango.. but with a few more pieces.

I'll post a bit more about the kit as things progress, so without further adue..
PICS (pic size can be trimmed if nesessary)

I'm guessing the gloves are crushguants, what did you use to make them?

Oh and this is just a preferance thing on my part, but I would remove the longshot logo. Sand it down then use a dremel to etch something else into it.

    Have a good one,
    James

Yea MS is good like that, I am ordering a second this week so I can do a couple different ideas. Looks good so far, good to see more heavy Mandos.

I dig the gauntlets. What did you use for a base for them? Did you alter anything? I'd like to know more!

    Re: Roki's Armor Thread

Nope.. not altered at all. Purchased them as-is from a 3rd party seller on Amazon. There isnt even a brand-name tag on them that i can find. But whoever made them (i THINK they're Icon biker gloves), realy knows how to make a pair of gloves. Under all the armored pieces (which are just thin polished stainless) there are air vents. The wrist armor you see isnt all of it, theres one more plate that goes over the bottom of your wrist as well. I'll get some more pics of them posted after my camera's batteries re-charge.

Agh those gloves are sick. Your mando's gonna be crazy if you use those as your base for a templet.

Better shots of the gloves. The pics dont show it very well.. but the red hue you see.. isnt part of the scheme. Not about to dink with color levels to get rid of it. The stitching tho.. is a light yellow color as shown.

The same gauntlets have been used by one of the KOTE Mandos as crushgauntlets for his DeathWatch.

    Re: Roki's Armor Thread

I have a pair myself. Those actually look like knock-offs of the Icon gloves. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

The Icon gloves have their logo on the wrist flap and have the studs on the palm.

Also the Icon logo is stamped in the middle wrist plate and there is another flap on the back of the hand.

Lastly on the side of the originals there is no star stamped in them. This picture also shows the extra flap on the back of the hand better.

After doing some research, I belive those are SS Metalwear Motorcycle gloves. There basicaly imitations of the Icons, but at a cheaper price.

Ok now I really need to go to the bike shop to find my gloves for my mando. Those are crazy cool. I saw a few like this back when I was poking around for ideas on my gloves. But never saw any thing this good.

Minor update guys. My helmet has shown up and its just sitting on my shelf .. staring at me.. scarying the bejesus out of me too. MS Custom buckets are frightening. Once i get the visor cut out i'll post some pics.

Z-Man: Definately check out biker/motocross shops. They've almost always got some interesting trikets...

Update ! :: Got my backplate in today. Thanks to the wizard of metal armor, Wickedbeard !

I slung it over my back and so far it fits almost perfectly (kinda hard to determine that for sure until i get a vest). The only thing i noticed is that i need to shave the shoulder tabs down a bit. Other than that.. Perfection !

    Re: Roki's Armor Thread

PROGRESS ! Got a Dremel (finnaly) a couple weeks back and i now have all the proper areas cut out. Granted its not much overall progress.. but hey, it is what it is

I cut out the front and back grills to accommodate fans. The rear set of circular cut outs are going to be hose intakes, and for the smaller pair i'm going to fit in 1/4" panel-style red LED's.

After i figure out the hose situation, and a couple other details, i'll get this thing painted up

You will find that painting this monster is one of the most stressful and rewarding moments in the life of your armor. =D

Looks great so far. Glad to see I'm not the only one who decided to use the front grills for something useful. They make great outlets for voice amp speakers.

    Updated again !

Hydra did a design for me, and this WILL be brought to life as soon as i can make it so. I especialy like how she did the top ridge line on the MS Custom bucket. Overall this setup should be butt-whoopin awesome when finished.

    Comments, obviously.. are welcome 8)

    Stuff Update !

Got some stuff from a Mercs member and its recent arrival (and the arrival of some other stuff) has realy helped me along on the road to near completion.

The white stuff is the items i recieved from the Merc member (thanks Jun), as well as the hip holster, complete with pistol. The other stuff is some just a flight suit, pistol belt and pouches from Captain Daves.

    Re: Roki's Armor Thread

Got the cod and butt plate painted up. Depending on a thing or two it MIGHT get sanded down and redone, not sure yet.. the satin black texture isnt quite sitting right with me at the moment. But otherwise.. the base primer is standard grey. Overtop of that I used an aluminum plate metalizer to give it the silvery look, ontop of that is your standard krylon forest green and the black is krylon satin black. Any further weathering suggestions are appreciated, as i'm absolutely horrible at it lol.

    Further news:

LadySewForUs has completed the vest, and should soon have the neckseal done.

AND i'm in the process of getting one of 99CentTaco's new JP harness rigs. So overall i think i've got almost all of my soft parts taken care of. Just waiting on the Kama :-D

Thanks for the compliments guys ! The helmet is being painted right now, and hopefully i'll get it back from the painter in a week or two. The armor plates are being worked on as well, but those will take MUCH longer, as i've got limited funding right now, and he's got his own side projects. BUT.. that doesnt mean i'll neglect you guys, i've got a few other things going in the garage too. So keep watchin !

    Re: Roki's Armor Thread

Ok.. ok.. i've FINNALY got it painted. Automotive style 8) This paint aint goin nowhere lol. Its not finished yet.. needs weathering, a little touch up painting, and a few doo-dads. Namely the LED's in the small holes in the back, the hose attachements in the larger ones, and i need to actually attach the visor and ear cap (and RF stalk) BUT.. its painted at least !! ;D ;D

I've also got the JP sanded down well enough i think. Since the JP needed a little TLC, i'm going to be using a bondo-like substance called EasySand.
It comes in a squeeze tube, so its easy to get out. Once you get the hardener compound mixed in.. i kid you not.. dont let it sit around long. Its sandable in 5 minutes. I got a bunch of the little spots, and one of the larger spots, gooped up and sanded in 30 minutes. Since I only got a partial tube from the bodyshop, i think i'm going to have to go out and get a full tube.. this stuff is amazing.

Its a Nerft N-Strike Longshot CS-6, and I got it from Target.

As for the 'how' i painted it up like that.. its a lengthy explanation. I can list all the steps here if you'd like. Overall it was just time consuming.

    And tips..

    1) Painters Tape Is Your Friend, especialy if you do like i did and use multiple colors.
    2) Take your time and properly sand off any logos (i hand sanded all mine off, i didnt want to get 'dremel happy' and end up with dips or holes),
    3) Rub the whole thing down with denatured alcohol to get any clinging particles off, then do it again to make sure, and prime it with a good primer.
    4) If the gun itself has little details.. take the extra time to do something to bring them out a little bit, a bit of color on obscure areas can do wonders.
    5) Greeblies are fun things to add if you've got some laying around. The bottom barrel of the front part of my longshot has a pair of spacers and the top cap from the inside of an old hard drive
    6) Above all else.. TAKE YOUR TIME and have fun doing it

Awesome, thanks alot! Im thinking of scratchbuilding mine but I do like that Longshot!

Just to add, I've been looking at the Nerf guns. My god their not cheap anymore for what they are are they? Still, I did see some that I liked, the Recon blaster was pretty cool.

The hose is 1" crush proof hosing, but the ends of the fittings are 1 3/4" across.

    Re: Roki's Armor Thread

Updates ! Got the visor mounted (sorta) and the weathering pretty much all taken care of. The angle of the sun kinda drowns out some of the carbon dust/blackwash, but just imagine most of those shots with about 10-20% more grimeyness and you'll get the picture. Dont mind pic #3.. as i said earlier, i havent quite got the visor pinned down fully yet. Them mandibles are giving me LOADS of trouble *grumbles*

Thank's for the comments guys. They mean alot. I tried to keep things simple. I've noticed that when i try to get extravagant things dont turn out the way they should. Next up is to remove the visor, do a smidge bit more weathering (touching up mainly), then spray it down with a matte-finishing spray. Then its time to figure out how to get the visor and mandibles to play nicely.

I used a visor from T-Visor.com It took a little hacking and some rather inventive glueing to get that thing in there due to the lip of the mandibles and around the rest of the T. But.. its in there now and it wont be going anywhere anytime soon lol.

No dedicated thread on my behalf. This is the only thread i've got here dedicated to this armor.

If you want the thread for the helmet, look around for Marrow Sun's custom helmet threads.

Yes I have, actually. Its very tempting, since i had a BLAST doing that Longshot. The thought of getting the whole N-Strike lineup, and modding the bejesus out of all of them, has crossed my mind a few times.

Nope, nothing new realy about the chest (or any of the rest) of the armor. The man i've got doing it is kinda hobbled at the moment due to the lack of a dishing stump lol. It'll get done in due time tho.

I'm rather fond of them myself 8) It is a shame you cant find them in brown. The only colors i've seen ones like this in are black and white. Keep an eye on the Icon lineup of motocross gloves tho, they may come up with something along these lines again.

No plans for one yet. Just going with the stock RF for now.

And as promised.. here's a few updates. JP is painted (missile is painted too.. just not pictured), new earcap is painted and installed, RF painted and installed, gauntlets.. are there :-p and a little work has been done to them, not much obviously. And the final pic is a gathering of most of the major components that i have in at least 80% finished condition. Not shown tho are the main gun (big green one further up in this thread), flight suit, vest and neck seal.

The gloves.. are a sticking point atm. I'll be getting the 'short' versions of them when finances allow. The long ones i'll be keeping around for my 'out of armor' gear.

The bucket, is a limited run of MS: Custom's from Marrow Sun (who is now retired). I've got 1 of the 11 he made.

    Re: Roki's Armor Thread

    Here they are !

Shoulder bells : Wont be really weathered until after i get back from the painter. I plan on the mercs skull where it is now (most likely it'll be a green or silver/grey) and the Protectors skull (in similar coloring) on the other bell.

Left/Right chest & Diamond : Those are as weathered as they're going to get untill they're back from the painter. I'm going to put down a bit more masking fluid before i take them uptown tho to peserve the weathering thats already there (obviously).

Ab plate: Thats the one piece not going to the painter, so i'm going to have a bit of fun with it.. well i already did >_>. Just a bit of masking fluid again, and for the smaller scrapes i just scraped away at it with the edge of a metal ruler. Most likely i'll go and throw it around outside for a while, and get some dusting done on it to remove some of the sheen. But.. for the most part i think that plate is about finished and ready for vest mounting ^_^

Edit : For those who cant be arsed to look back in the thead for what the finished product should look like. Here's Hydra's Concept Art

    Re: Roki's Armor Thread

Well, finally got a wild hair and started to work on these bad boys. Basically all i got done was the trimming so i can get the hinges on. Nothing is permanently secured or finalized yet. But overall, i think i have everything on there the way i want it. Might change things around depending on you guy's input. Remember, please.. everything is pretty much duct taped together, so please excuse the sloppiness

You see the little turret gun, that's what i might make non-turrety. It moves too freely, and the peg I've got it on sits too high. I cant chop the peg down and still have the gun removable. Basically its glued on a surface-mount push button. If i chop the post and shorten it, i'll have to glue the post and cap back together, making the whole thing perminant but mobile. Not something i want to do.. but may have to. Option 2 is to chop the post, and glue the button to the securing nut. Making it removable, but not mobile.

I also got a wild eyed idea and totaly redid my cod piece. I think its a vast improvment over my previous attempt, and it more matches the color scheme of the set

As always, comments, questions.. etc etc. welcome

    Re: Roki's Armor Thread

Well guys.. its been a long strange trip so far.. and its getting much closer to done. I got the chest armor back from the painter yesterday, and over the last couple hours today I weathered these bad boys. My legs should be here early next week so i'll get those painted and posted asap. As well as finishing the collar and backplate.

But .. now for your viewing and critiquing pleasure (and please do be critical, i need honest opinions before i seal this stuff)

First up.. for those of you who like Shiney's.. the unweathered armor.

    I love before and afters

And now.. for the weathered .

    Edit:
Weathering methods : steel wool to get rough the paint up, add in surface scratches and even the big scratches. Didnt use a single bit of sandpaper. The big scratches are down to the metal, for that i just wore the paint down a ways with the steel wool, and literaly dug into the armor with the edge of a dull #2 exacto knife blade. After all that was done I dusted it with black line chalk (carbon dust) and i might mist it with black spray paint yet.. not sure about that at this point in time.

Again.. PLEASE PLEASE let loose on this stuff.

ok I like it, but the edges REALLY NEED weathering, remember the edges chip quicker than the rest of the armor, except of course areas that have been hit/scratched etc.

    Otherwise BEAUTIFUL work so far!

Oh yeah, are you gonna weather the leather? Can you take pic's of your weathering process for us to see, it's really helpful to see others weathering techniques, for instance I never would have thought of MUSTARD as a mask

LOL. Mustard is a nice mask, really. But you have to be carefull what you use it on because it WILL stain. Best way to mustard something, is to mask it, spray it, let it dry and get the mustard off ASAP.

The edges are weathered, just not very much. Might just have to go and rough'em up a bit more.

Well, one thing you have to remember about metal armor that doesn't apply to plastic and fiberglass is that the paint will weather very naturally based on movement. Thats honestly the best kind of weathering, because it looks natural and happens in all the right spots.
