Republic Commando in progress

Jaastermareel

New Hunter
Hi all,

please excuse my english, im from germany

I want to share my Republic Commando - Project with you, so people, wo like to build a RC armour theirselfs, have something to start with. and also id like to get some feedback, wich is never bad.

I started to take pictures a bit late. so i only upload one picture by now, wich displays everything relatively good. but iam going to explain what i did so far.

i started with a Life size puppet, covered it in plastic foil, and sprayed a layer of PU-filler on it.

then i cutted this PU-filler (wich works great) with a knife.
I did that untill it looked almost like the "real" armour parts.
(used lots of reference photos)

If you take a closer look to the puppets arm. there is only the Gauntlet piece left, i already removed the upper arm with two cutts at the sides, glued them together again and covered this with plaster. then sanding it till it has an even surface.
(i will upload some pictures of that shortly)

i also went on with the breastplate, i cutted out some more detail with my knife and sprayed some more PU-filler on areas like the "arm hole", cause it didnt look right.

The plan is, to create positive models, of the armour parts, with this technique. Then to make silicon and glassfiber molds out of that, and then to cast the actual armour with that.

The only thing, that is complicating, is the Helmet.
(it always is, isnt it?)
The Helmet is out of PU-filler too, covered with plastelline, i thought, this might work good... but iam not sure anymore. maybe i start it over...

If you have some patterns or templates or anything i could use, or maybe some instructions, how you are doing completely new helmets, i would be glad, you could share them with me.

... i was cleaning my workshop when i thook the photos, so i put the parts out of it. so the background is just my basement, please dont bother.

and... no i didnt cut off the puppets head to make the helmet.

I'll be watching this one! Republic Commandos are awesome! (y) Are there any templates for scratchbuilding the armor and helmets?

Keep up the good work. :cheers

keep us posted, and please, lots of pics. looking great so far.

i've been wondering that same about templates for RC gear. i can't seem to find any floating around anywhere.

ok, here are some more pics

1. the inside of the biceps armour, when you take a closer look, you can see the cut-line i made to remove it from the mannequin.
(When doing the molds, the inside will be filled with PU-Filler, iam only interested on the outside shape of this modell).

2. this turned out good i think! its the sideview of the left biceps armour, i also gotta dremel some areas off here, but it looks good already.

3. backside of the biceps armour(still have to dremel a bit on this).

the Biceps looks still too "round" they have more edges in real,i know ...im working on this...

4.this is the mannequins left arm, just more detailed... i removed the biceps, as described already.

5.this is the right arm, only covered with the PU-filler. it just looks like that, when dryed... but you can cut it very good as you can see.

6. this is the breastplate by now, it is not symetric yet, iam going to change this when i start to shape it with the sanding machine.
important is, i only covered the front side with plaster, cause i still want to remove it from the mannequin the same way i dit with the biceps armour.

enjoy, more pics are comming.

That is a fine start on a huge project. Be sure to post pics as you go. Be sure to take your time. It looks good so far.

ok, update!

i tryed to make a mold of the Gauntlet. but without silicone... i made it with plaster, it works, but i am not statisfied with the result, thats why iam going to make a new one in the next two weeks, this is also why i wont load up any pics of that.

a firend of mine offered me(hes an architect), that he will model the Helmet on a CAD programm, so at the end i will get a perfect helmet(and to make molds out of that), problem with that method is, this friend has almost no time, so it will take quite a while till this is done...
anyway, i also started to model the helmet by hand(made a new one, pics are coming) this might go faster and the result must be accepted, till the CAD helmet is done(y)

anyway, i was also working on the Breastplate, started with the leg armour and finaly finished the upper section of the right gauntlet... just take a look at the pics.

anyone here with references to clonetrooper backplates?... i want to model this at the RC Backplate.
I just dont like what i have seen so far on other costumes. its nothing you can see all the time, cause the backpack is covering this but it would be a nice detail i think.

hallo mien herr wie geht alles
exuse my bad german i'm a little rusty
your RC is coming a long great
i'd apprecciate it if you add lots of pictures of the backpack as i'm thinking
of adding a similar backpack to my custom mando.
i'll be heading through germany in june to visit some of my family in austria so who knows i might drop by:lol:
carry on the good work

update...

pic of the new helmet... i apologize, my camera has a bad optic, thats why it may look incorrect ( yeah only the visor, that one is really not straight already)

please notice, i just started with that helmet. Still a lot of dremel, sanding and plastering to do.

-------

Started to model the Backplate... (this is still very rough) and i still dont have any acceptable references on clonetrooper backplates ( iam only interested in the Square, where the backpack is mounted)

------

and a full sideview of the torso model i have so far (front or Breast section is still not finished)

i will also take another look at the gauntlets, found some new references on that...

enjoy

Iam very busy these days, i dont find any time to work on this right now... next week iam lying in the hospital, cause i will get an operation (nothing bad).

and then i only have one week left, untill iam going to the Army... (german Army) Bundeswehr... ill have to, they want me... :(((

The helmet Model is almost complete, just a bit more work to the back area and i can mold it... i already bought some Silicone... but didnt start molding anything with that...

instead iam really thinking on doing it with a vaccum molding machine... fact is, i already built one, iam only missing one more electric bbq grill, to run the oven for the styrene...
styrene is also ready.

this is going to be fine... iam just not sure about one thing... shall i cut my model in two halfs, and then mold it with the vaccum machine?? or should i do a silicone mold out of it, and then make a pure plaster model with that, and then.... go ahead and vacuum form this part?????

Okay, i decided to do this... this is maybe interesting for some of you...

altought it does not appear this way on the photos... the helmet is mostly Accurate to the one in the games... this has one reason...
in a Month of hard work, i drew a 3d model of the helmet, using Autodesk...
please dont ask me for the data.
i add a short picture of an early 2d model i drew from the original polygon models used in the Republic commando Game.

The architect friend of mine, is just the guy programming the plot for the machine, that will cut the helmet into wood... that takes some time, as i said already

i hope this displays that iam not just working on a big piece of unshaped plaster.

to do the second helmet, i simply printed out the 2d pictures, glued them onto cardboard (only the 3 views you see in the picture)

i had 2 cardboards... one with the left and right (just mirrored the sideview) and one with frot and back... i made a cut at the middle of both cardboards... so that they would fit in each other... now you can imagine what i did to do the second helmet.

you all stay safe, ill keep you posted

Hey how's this going? Your progress has been very impressive so far. I love the RC and will be making my own bucket and armor soon.

It's great to see another budding commando out there.

Hi all,

i returned from the hospital... and now one week of modelling and molding is lying in front of me... and i will get done with the helmet, for sure... then at the 1st of july iam going to the Military...
the paint job is not the problem, i decidet to make the Scorch scheme...

i extracted the original game textures from each Commando... i wont post them public here, scince they have copyright.

going to buy two electric grills on monday.... no matter what they cost.

yeah!!!!.... ahh and... i bought 1mm thick polystyrene.... is that ok for vacuum forming??? wasnt sure, i watched some videos on youtube already but never payed attention to what the guy said... and i was always fixed on 1 mm thickness...

anyway... this HAS TO WORK.... then i wont be at home for the next 3 month
