    Re: New bucket and Armour

Thanks guys!!! I'm sorry i haven't posted any updates on this in a while, but I kinda burned out on it and am taking a bit of a break to recharge the batteries.

I'll hopefully have updates on saturday night/sunday morning for this (even if it is only one or two plates. )

no vod, that's my secret; have lots of projects so that when you get burned out on doing one, you move to another one, then when that one gets frusterating, you move again, and on it goes.

Just note that this DOES NOT work well when your boss gives you a project deadline.

    Re: New bucket and Armour

Alright, so I'm working on the left knee (yeah, kinda a random place to start...) and this is what I have come up with:

I am going to make the center plate first using 1mm sintra, then plate it with 1mm sintra to get the grooves that are in it. Then if you notice, the sides of the knee plate are some sort of semicircular slide for the knee plat to rotate on.

Those are attached around the back of the leg by a strap. I am going to use an elastic strap to hold it on to my leg, then a hinged plate over the top of that.

/\ The elastic will sit under this plate.

So, that is my start. I will hopefully have pics for you soon.

My vod Jonathan has been drooling over your armor and is determined already that his next Mando (or his point 2 version of the current one) will be largely influenced by this set of heavy armor.

    Re: New bucket and Armour

Now I am interested. When I saw someone doning these pictures for their Roleplay character on myspace I grew interested in the armor. But I also thought it looked nothing like mandalorian armor but then again looks can be decieving. My interest went into the helmet and how it looked but I am not one that is a good sculpter. But truly I can't wait to see what you come up with for this project. I can barley contain my excitment level LOL!

ALSO, I took a stab at the armour, and failed fabulously. So, I will be attempting to form the armour using A'den Skirata's method; I will make the armour out of posterboard first, then fibreglass and bondo it. HOPEFULLY it works better than my other attempt...

    Re: New bucket and Armour

Alright, here is another tutorial (I guess it's a branch off of the helmet one):

    Bondoing 101

    Alright, start with these:
    Bondo
    Hardener
Applying tool (refered to as the BAT; Bondo Applicator Tool)

Then, you take a small-ish amount of bondo (I use about a golfball sized amount)

Add the required amount of hardener (read the bondo can label...I never use the right amount so I dont know what it is...)

    Stir THOROUGHLY...

Then, using the BAT, apply the bondo to your construction in a spreading motion, leaving a thin, mostly even coat:

And then your done!!! repeat process until you get a nice, even coat over the entire helmet. Hope this helps guys!

Just remember that when it comes to sanding, it's easier to sand a lump than try to sand out a hole.

So if holes appear when you sand, you will need to put another small layer of the bondoglass over it then sand again once it's dry.

Also you will need rough grit to get the shape (60 to 120), smooth grit to even the surface (200 to 800) and fine grit (wet and dry paper 1000 up) to smooth the surface out. Always do it in that order, too fine a grit too early will take you ages and too heavy a grit later one and you'll just put scratches into the surface.

    Hope that helps.

Haha! Don't you just love it when you make silly mistakes like that?

A'den & Saz: Thanks for the tutorial! That'll be helpful when it comes time to make a custom helmet!

Out of curiousity A'den did you CAST that OR bounty hunt bucket out of bondoglass?

No, I used paper temps, then coated it in bondoglass, then sanded...and sanded...and sanded...

Not yet...I have built a base to form my plastic on though (now I can make more than one set!!! ) I need to get some accelerant so I can laminate my 2mm plastic plates into 6mm plates...or order more sintra...

I haven't really done much of anything on this or my other mando lately...been helping Dem and the vod'ike with their stuff, but hopefully as this is a nice long weekend, I'll get some done. And on this, as I need metal for the other build.

helmet or armour templates? I made the temps, but the armour ones no longer exist and the helmet ones are incomplete...I do plan on doing a run of these helmets though, once I get a master built.

    Re: New bucket and Armour

I cant wait to see it Kal!

And, in answer to many question I've been getting about helmet construction (and in particular, the fibreglassing aspect of it) I'm gonna post this link here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RU27gc0Mkbg

It's from our buddies over in the 405th, and the same concept applies to fett lids.

    A'den

PS- I am still making a complete bucket tutorial...it's just taking some time...

    Re: New bucket and Armour

    thanks kal!

And actually, this project is on the backburner right now. I need to do (in this order)

    1. Supercommando bucket (for kal)
    2. Senate commando bucket (for whiteraven)
    3. Noramal bucket for the ad'ika
    4. finish off the other ad'ika beskar'gam
    5. and THEN this build.

So yeah...it might be some time...BUT, the helmet tutorial I promised in the above post will get done soon.
