Here is a tutorial one of our members made after building some scratch-built helmets for his kids out of bicycle helmets. They came out great!

Here is the helmet before it's been painted. They haven't posted any pics of it after painting yet, but it is full size. Another good thing about going this route is that you don't have to add padding.

Are there any websites that sell very cheap helmets?

The only very cheap mando helmet your going to find is a Rubies, and that's going to run you around $60-90 for that. Probably find them on ebay or if you google it.
