My Mando Armor-WIP (Warning *LARGE PICS*)

Hey all! Kind of new here, though more of a lurker. Now I'm coming out and showing what I got. Well kind of, most of my ideas are still in my head.

I'm working on a 3D model of my armor so I can get a better idea of what it'll look like once I'm finished. I'm calling this UNIT-01 becasue I plan on modifying it heavily in the years to come once I acctualy build it. for now, it's just the simple Fett set up with custom paint/accessories.

Well anyways, here a pic with notes. I used a SWG armor pic, but I'm not exactly going that way. I'm not even sure of the color scheme I'll use. Maybe camo, or gillie suit?

The design of the armor follows the character in my fan fic, which I'm hoping to turn into a fan film. He was accepted as a Mandalorain durign the Clone Wars by a Mando training sergeant (one of the Cuy'val Dar, not a clone). The crown is a rememberance of an earlier (unknown) war he had participated in. I just added the fin because of the fact that he served on board a Acclamator-class assault ship, and basicly became like family with the most of the clones aboard.

I'll post the story up later, and the 3D images this weekend once it acctually resembles armor. Any C&C would be welcome, thanks!

yeah dont do the SWG style armor its just plain unpractical
and uh the camo mando sounds good,i had that idea once too

but you gotta think about something you wont get tired of wearing
and your favorite colors always work

    Re: My Mando Armor-WIP

I have a custom design with camo though one good thing to keep in mind when doing camo is possibly have your armor be a solid color and your fatigues be camo or vice versa so to have the design stand out and create a small contrast. If you go the route of a ghillie suit I would suggest making it a shawl or cloak so as not to interfere with your armor.

I always wondered, why do people think the SWG mando design is impractical? It slightly enhances mobility yet not technically sacrificing protection.

Actually that suit looks really feasible.Even the knees.I wouldn't mind tackling that idea sometime.

Actually, now that I think of it, why not make a Mandalorian Gundam? Easily doable. Just need a huge gatling gun and beam cannon in the middle8)

Of course I might just drop the crown. Well, at least for now.

Small update. No armor yet, but that'll come soon enough. right now I'm just making the body to put the armor on. Here are two pics of what's goin' on so far. For relative size comparison I put in a low-poly tutorial helmet for a chopper pilot.
Oh, and all the sections you see won't be on the final product. Infact, they'll be covered up. The renderer is just rending all the triangles that make up the mesh. And what you see on one side, is exactly the same on the other. If your curious, I'm using 3DS max 8 to do model this out.

When all is set and done, I plan on offering 3D templates for ya'll. If you have a design, and want to see what it look likes in 3D before you tempt the paint brush, let me tempt the keyaboard and help ya see your final product! Will be some time in the making, but I hope it helps out when we're are designing armor Though as for dimensions of custom pieces, I can probably work something out with another program I have.

Anyways, any and all C&C would be appreciated. Especially since I'm still learning the program.

3D Studio Max 8 is the program

Thanks gamer! Just pulling, pushing, adding, deleting verts and such. Kinda similar to Rhino 3D, which I've been working in for about 3-4 years now. Not all that similar, but enoguh to know what a line is.

Hey tandish, can you post a couple pics of the 3D model? Would love to see it.

Sure thanks! What kind of modeling did you use to make? I was thinking using plane modeling on it like i did the body, but did you use something different?

I haven't been able to touch my model because I've been painting my house to get ready to sell all weekend. I should have an update on the waist/legs/feet later this week, and next week I'll work on the helmet. I'm leaving the gauntlets for last since those and the jet pack should be the most intricate.

I've been tihnking of the main weapon, or atl east one of the main weapons, and I came across this mauser airsoft rifle that's modeled after C96 Broomhandle Mauser pistol. I've seen a low price of $100, and from what I understnad, the reviews are kinda good as an airsoft.
I've seen cheaper, but I'm using this link because they have bigger picture than everyone else:

Now that I think about it, I'd prefer a Famas airsoft since it's cheap, ya don't have to modify it all to look sci-fi/modern, and I don't think it's all that well known, like the FN P-90 before Stargate SG-1 started using it.

the broomhandle mauser is a good idea if you dont mind having the same gun as han solo... cut the barrel shorter and add a flare to it... paint it black... add weathering

Not really an update, but these are accessories I'm shooting for. Perhaps not these stores, but at least they have the pictures:

    Shoulder Holster w/ 2 mag puches http://www.hobbytron.com/AirsoftGunA...PPVCH170B.html

Equipment belt (lots of pouches) http://www.hobbytron.com/AirsoftGunA...PPVCB998G.html

Right leg tactical thigh holster http://www.hobbytron.com/AirsoftGunA...ineHolder.html

Left leg tactical thigh holster for 3 rifle mags http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...:WNASIF:US:122

Main blaster; A CYMA spring loaded airsoft Glock 26 with muzzle and and clip attachments - this would go in the thigh holster http://www.hobbytron.com/AirsoftPist...gMCAPP698.html

Back up blaster; An electric airosft pistol, replicating the look and size of a Vektor CP1; would go in the shoulder holster - although hobbytron says it's James Bond's gun, IT'S NOT! He uses a Walther PPK, and later the Walther P99 http://www.hobbytron.com/ElectricJam...unBC2030B.html

Blaster rifle; A spring loaded airsoft FAMAS G2 assault rifle - Comes with sight, laser and flashlight - I'm not going to use the front handle thing http://www.hobbytron.com/AirsoftAssa...66571M46P.html

    What do you guys think?

And just for reference, these are James Bond's guns:
Walther PPK - Used this for most of the movies http://www.waltheramerica.com/firearms/ppks.cfm
Walther P99 - Pierce Brosnan used this in all of his James Bond movies http://www.waltheramerica.com/firearms/p99qa.cfm

just my opinion.. but i would drop the shoulder holster... keep the 2 thigh holsters though... if you want some upper body accesories id go with a kabar style knife mounted upside down on the left upper chest/shoulder area where ou simply reach across and pull it out... im pretty sure that the marines do that when they're issued a knife... maybe add a sheath to one of the boots as well... could also get a tactical vest and modify the armor to fit to that...

Dont take this personally but those are softair guns, not airsoft. Are you planning on putting some Famas mags inside those thigh pouches because they will not fit.

    Re: My Mando Armor-WIP

I've thought about the shoulder knife knife set up as well, and I've been switching between either one. Not entirely sold on either yet. I've also thought about getting a tactical vest and reworking it with the armor. I've seen some with the up-side down shoulder sheath and a cross draw, but I'm not sure. Actually, the belt I showed has a holster, so I could use that instead.

As for the leg pouches, no I wasn't expecting them to fit. If I can find a leg pouches that would fit FAMAS mags I would get it.

And please forgive my lack of knowledge, but what's the difference between airsoft and softair?

The 7.62 was used in the M14 rifles that soldiers used in basic, and some snipers used as well. A FMJ just refers to a type of bullet, it's illegal for civilians to own a FMJ bullet (atleast here in CA, where almost all guns are illegal). Basically it means an armor peircing round.

FMJ bullets are illegal for civilian use, I think US nation wide. Police (if not all police, then just SWAT) and military are of course allowed.

The 7.62 round comes in two forms, 7.62x39 and 7.62x54....or maybe its 7.62x51, I dont remember. Either way, the shorter round is whats commonly known as the AK round, and the longer one is the more powerful version that was used in bigger battle rifles like the M14 and FAL. The m16 used a completely different and much smaller round (.223 or 5.56mm)

I like your idea of using a FA-MAS as a custom Fett gun....that might just turn out well. I was thinking about modifying an old Ruger MkIV to look similar to Jango Fett's pistol. It already has a similar appearance, so it shouldnt be too hard.

**Oh and as far as I know, at least here in Texas, full metal jacketed rounds are not illegal. I hope not at least, because I have about 500 of them in my closet with my AK47

HA HA! I finally have an update! Alas, no armor. However I am in the semi-finals for the legs, body, and arms. After modeling the legs, I had to fix the body to match, so it's a bit different from what you last saw. For the arms, I just scaled it up to match the modifed body and the new legs. I'm not to worried about the accuracy of the legs and body to real limbs since I'm foing to fix it look more like "fabric" later on, or at least a tad larger in size to make it look like it's over the real legs, then put the armor on top.
Anyways, I'll deal with that later. I'm also adding 2 profile pics so you can see the main shape of the body. Any and all suggestions would be helpful, and crack jokes are also welcome

Wouldn't it be easier to just download a Poser program like DAZ, and then create armour models for it?

it might be pretty cool lookin if you cut the barrel to look like the dl-44 but leave ths stock on it, has anyone here seen for a few dollars more the western with clint eastwood??? well one of the charecters had a pistol with an attachable rife stock for more accuracy at a longer distnace. so like i said chop the mauser barrel leave ths stock n dress it u plike the dl-44. i dunno i think itd be prettty dang cool myself.

That's a good idea for the mauser. Probably a good idea to add something to the barrel, or just cover the whole barrel (aftering being cut) to look better, and kinda get the fett look.

It would be easier to get a poser model, but then again I'm still learning 3DS, and this gives me the chance to practice modeling in general, and I get extra credit

Finally an update! I'm making this part of my finals at school to justify doing it during class time
It's just a basic bucket right now, but without the ear peices. I'm not even sure if I'm going to make those for this one since this is going to be a custom. I will later though for fun. I still have to do UVW mapping on it (putting textures on it to look more realistic) but I thought I'd post my progress thus far:

EDIT::: Ok, I got two more images just for fun. I wanted to put a background on the pics above, but I made them .PNG's and so it didn't show up...Here's a pic of the helmet on the body with the background, plus just the background itself. Here's lookin' at ya!

The eye was original a 3DS template that came with the program, and I just modified it. The eye was just a normal brown, and the eye was less crazy and more white/opaque

Hey, THIS is a good idea. I have DAZ|Studio, with a lot of people wich can be founded for freebie on the net (including M3, V3, Aiko3, Hiro, HIM, HER...) but there is a big problem: DAZ|Studio can only read Poser, DAZ and .obj files. He can't read the .3DS or .max files of 3D Studio, even not the .dxf. maybye 3D studio can export in .obj files, I don't know.

If anyone here knows how to include .DXF files in DAZ|Studio, PM me, please.

I'll turn those photos into links later when I'm at home not school.

I've got a color scheme set, and now I'm just working ahow to make it. I'm trying to think of something that's unique that can still end out to make this movie quality. I'm thinking of using this as the vest:http://cgi.ebay.com/Desert-Tan-Marin...QQcmdZViewItem

I'll experiment with this or some other similar vest no matter what, but my question is how to darken the fabric material. Would some sort of color die work? I may end up using the standard jango vest, but I'm just trying to be unique yet movie quality.

Here's my main color scheme, minus the little details:
Green jumpsuit, brown vest, grey armor...just look at my avatar to see since I'm pretty much basing it off of that. I don't now when I'll get updated pics up of the 3D model since I have another project going on, and I'm just doing this during break.

The IBV is pretty thick though you may be able to take out the padding inserts since its just a replica. You will most likely have some molle webbing showing since you will be attaching you armor to that. Dying wise Im not too certain. It probably would take it but Im not certain of the manufacturer so Im not certain on the fabric or quality.
