I'm in the middle of making my Jango vest out of charcoal gray vinyl. I couldn't find a pattern either what I would reccomend (and what I did) was find a shirt that you like the fit then trace that out for your pattern. So far it's looking pretty good here. I'll post pics tomorrow.

P.S. I'm the 100th reply to this post..don't I win a Tennessee Tuxedo lunchbox or something?

I was just looking at this thread:
    http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showt...461#post350461

And at the bottom, BH-7603 has pics of his template for his flak vest.

Dunno if this is any help...?

If you are wanting form fitting I'm not so sure vinyl is the way you would want to go. Mainly I would start with a normal women's vest pattern. With this you can setup where the darts are gonna be. If you use another material, maybe use a stretchier fabric that will help keep your form, then that would be pretty well, but with vinyl, it will be hard to keep a good shape with as many seams you need to make a vest form fit.

for the visor installation I used 2 part liquid metal (similar to JB Weld) to place bolts on the lid. You have to make sure that there is substantial mixture around the bolt heads as well, this is very important or the bolts WILL snap off (see the pic)

This holds the visor with no probs at all

Re: My Fem Mando Progress (pics)

    Tiffany,

Sorry it took so long to get these posted. It was a fairly raucous 4th weekend with the family! But here are the pictures of my vest progress so far.

First I traced an outline of a t-shirt that had the fit I was looking for in the vest. I left it a little long in the waist on purpose. This way I have some length to play with until I decide where I want the waist to fall on the jumpsuit. Most of it will be covered by girthbelt anyway.

Next I made another line that follows the traced line to allow for extra material during sewing. This will allow me a little room as well should I want to reconsider the fit.

Third, I folded the vinyl in half and cut along the outer yellow line. This gives me two equal halves for the vest.

Next, I pinned the two halves together (gray sides facing each other) with sewing clips. Also, I used a straight edge to sharpen and even the inner line where I'll sew. I want them to be as even as possible so the vest will lay correctly on both sides.

I'll post pics of the actual sew line and the fit tomorrow. Didn't mean to dumb this down but I wanted to be clear about what I was doing.

Pink, I'm gonna take some pics of the vest I had made for the female armor set I built. I'll have them on your post in the Mercs forum tonight after the podcast.

THANKS YOU EVERYONE FOR ALL THE HELP WITH THE VEST AND THE VISOR!! I appreciate it SOOO much!
I'm in the process of sewing together my vest and i just finished my skirt. Here are some updates pics!!

    XOXO

    Skirt...

    Vest Process...

This is a duct tape cast of my torso. I learned about this awesome trick to getting a custom form- fitting vest design on the Mercs Board. Again thanks to everyone who helped out, hopefully the vest making mystery is solved for more than just me.

Yep holes need to be drilled in the visor (as long as you are careful it should not crack). It is important to drill the holes in the visor first, as you will need to line up the visor in the helmet in order to mark where to place the bolts.

Pink Mando - that mini skirt is looking awesome. Its nice to see a totally new idea taking shape

Thanks for posting those pics. I was wondering if there was a trick to the vest. I wanted mine to sit closer to my body, too. I figured I could use my little duct tape friend as a model, but cutting it and using it as a pattern never came to mind.

I did note your post silver n black trooper, but then got side tracked before answering... for that, I appologize.

To ensure that the visor doesn't crack when you drill the holes, tape it with painters tape ( I find the green stuff works best ), and drill slowly and carefully. I find it best to support the sides of the visor, on either side of where you're drilling. I rest it on my lap as my legs will give a bit, yet still be solid/stable enough to prevent the visor from flexing too much.

I see your doing a panel style female vest, thats great! Thats pretty much the BEST way to make a good form fitting female vest. Sorry I haven't had a chance to put pics up yet...gym and mercs podcast lastnight just took the wind outta my sails. =) I'll get them up tonight so you can compare.

If your going for princess seams, be aware that they can be a little difficult if your not an intermediate sewer. Just take your time and use resources on the internet like you have already been doing.

I've already got two kids, so worries.

I forgot to mention in my last post that it's best to start off with small pilot holes, then use progressively larger drill bits to increase the hole size. I just find it easier to control this way as larger drill bits can tend to grab or bite off chunks when you least expect it.

So you are not using a flight suit?

If so, I really like your different approach to this. Very rarely do you see people use something other than flight suits.

I was wondering why you had dropped off the planet after posting so much so quickly. My progress has slowed as well on my Jango. My wife just had our first baby last month and work expects me to actually WORK! Can't wait to see the pics and tell your man to post some updated Jango pics when he gets a chance as well.

Unless you are planning a jet pack or backpack, you could skip the backplate altogether. For my wife's custom, I plan on simply attaching a knee length cape across her neck and securing it to the collar with studs. Then she can actually sit down if she wants to.

It looks like your going sexy mando.

That being the case, why dont you get some of that 'shelf liner' thats like, toolbox liner stuff, thats like a see through heavy mesh, and make part of your gear out of that.

if your going to do sexy mando, showing some skin through is a MUST.

How did you get the 'chest cups' to be such a smooth round shape? Ive tried to round sintra and polystyrene, and have never had such luck.

    Lookin good!

I really want a pink jet pack! hehe.
But I am considering the cape, depends on money situation.

Lots of advice on here about skin and short skirts but I think you might want to watch out for looking like a Mando cheerleader. Of course I'll probably get banned for suggesting that you wear more clothes...LOL!

    a week later any progress?

i want you to know this inspired me for my girlfriends fett costume.

i never really expected her to be into any of this, but 3 months ago she wanted to know if i had a costume she could wear, and originally i was making her a samus costume for halloween, but i screwed up the mold on the helmet and they come out warped. So she asked if i could make her something else, and when i showed her the design for a female boba fett she got super excited.

really excited to see this finished, your concept art was so cool. I borrowed the idea of mixing imperial armor parts into the suit, though i'm not 100% sure what i'm keeping.

a pink jet pack sounds cool, but the biker scout pack looks great with this.

should be interesting to see what you come up with.

any thoughts of using the wizard of flight drawing templates to make a jet pack?

i made my jet pack for less than $25. most of the materials i already had.

It makes me happy to know that my mado has inspired your girlfriends costume.

My boyfriend, runjedirun, wanted me to be apart of this costuming thing and had to bribe me with a boob plate and a promise to make it pink. Now I'm really into it!! Its addicting. I had to slow it down b/c of time and money... but progress photos will be posted soon!!!
    Good Luck!

Thanks! The concept drawings are pretty much what I would like for it to look like in end... I haven't done much work in the past few months, but as soon as my life gets a little more organized I'll get back to it. :o

just browsing and admiring. Your question about a form fitting vest: I have done a lot of sewing over the years. Try finding a pattern for a vest at your local fabric/sewing/wal-mart store. The patterns are pretty easy to follow, and, for this you don't have to use any special type of seams.

I am really impressed with the work on the fem-mando. I have been trying to find a nice costume for my wife, so when I go trooping she can come along in costume. I think this concept of yours is very different and I think it would appeal to her because she is a soldier in the Army. The fem-mando would be perfect for her. Thank you for the inspiration.

Sorry so late on the advice about the vest. Seems you found an easy solution. Thanx for the tip on where to get "boob" armor. Maybe I can get my wife involved. Really can't wait to see this finished, its coming along beautifully. Never thought I would like a pink mando lol. This is fantastic.

Unless you got the guns already. a SMall tip:Airsoft guns can be a good and cheap to base the project on. Mauser sounds about right for blaster material for me. But you do what's right for you. Just hope you can handle all the drooling geeks and nerd that will be following you when you wear it. If you got a suit you got to waer it! :P

Looks nice. The trimming on the armor is nice and slight. Completely pink plates would be rather jarring. . . Plus the Helmet looks sharp! My friend Amy would kill for that Kama, girl. Nice Job!

Depending on who you ask aschultz. The Boba Rubies were apparently from the same mold as the Don Post helmets...hence why they are fugly beyond repair. But the Jango was a completely different production.
