My first post now that I can

This is my prelim design for a possible future Mando costume. Mostly done just to do them though.

    Original design:

Updated final design, with color test.

    Tell me what you think.

Keep in mind I know next to nothing about Mandalorians. I've been lurking here for a couple weeks though.

I like the design, reminds me of a Kotor Super Commando meets modern (Fett) armor.

only subjestions I would have is have the guants, knee and shin armor the same as your shoulder armor and maybe make the vest that the armors on the same color as your cheek area on your bucket.

Keep us posted when if you start the build up.

    Have a good one,

Great design! Looks like something thats stepped out of the pages of a KOTOR comic. This is more like a suit worn by the old Crusaders (not to be confused with Neo-Crusaders). My advice is to keep all your armor the orange color your going for. You just have to much brown going on and nothing to contrast your armor beyond your waist. You want your armor to stand out on the fabric because well...it's armor =) It's what makes our costumes so badass. Also, you may want to consider going with a lighter tan or kakhi vest to show some fade of use.

All in all it's a great design though!

I was thinking making the Gauntlets, Knee, and Shin the red, with a reversed color scheme for the designs on them.

I'm also working on different schemes, keeping the yellow in each though.

The brown is a placeholder, I intend on lightening it a bit... and I'm still not too sure what colors his small poncho is going to be.

A couple of my design sketches and another possible color scheme.

    Do colors mean anything specifically?

    Derek...great design,
though with all custom mando's it takes a lot to make them look right...details all in the details. not to mention weathering and details like materials and textures.

if you get that right you'll have an awesome costume. plus don't skimp on your weapon as well... a painted NERF gun just doesn't cut it.

    IMO

just take your time, and the colors dont mean a thing....but i'd stick to natural tones,

ps i like how we can see you art improve over time, great work.

Well, I have the weapons already planned. www.airsoftatlanta.com/images/kjw_mk1_carbine_jpg.jpg it's an airsoft gun

Not sure my art has really advanced in those pictures... they were done within 2 days of each other, last week... or did you mean my actual gallery?

If this ever does turn into a costume there will end up being far too much detail for it's own good... I'm compulsive that way.

I did have a question about that though, where's a good place to find a nice-quality helmet? And what should I expect to pay?

I like it. My eyes were drawn to the large ammounts of tools and toys you have on the suit. That is what I like to see on a custom mando. Can't wait to see what you do.

    I meant the gallery...

Well it boils down to what your willing to spend.

    a good thread about cost...

    http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showthread.php?t=17421

just do a search, Sgt Fang is what i curently have, i have the FPH next in mind... which more a want than a need.

    Bobamaker also make sweet kits.
There are several options out there..bradleyfett has a vacformed kit, cheaper but not as sharp in details (from the pics i've seen)

But i'd go for a Sgt Fang for a first helmet... if i'm not mistaken it has some lineage from a real helmet.

pm to see if they(makers) have any for sale...

or you can always check the cargo hold.

I really like it! I personally like the color scheme in the second picture, but I agree there's a bit too much brown. I haven't posted on here in a few months, hadn't seen anything that really caught my eye that much. But this is really nice!

    Cool beans...

I figure the helmet is the Main piece I'd buy instead of make... I've been looking at StarFortressProductions... They any good?

And the brown will be lighter and not seen nearly as much... I just used it as a "base coat" in the image, o get an idea of how they'll work together

Do not get a helmet from SFP! If your going to get a helmet, then go the route of Sgt. Fang, Marrow Sun, or Bobamaker.

Okay... what about their other things? $55 for chest armor seems pretty good... Is it just quality issues?

I actually have some of their body armor, and the chest armor wasn't to bad. The shoulders I had to work on some bubbled up spots, but chest armor isn't to bad. The back plate isn't the greatest, however their knees aren't to bad.

I would recomend not going with Starforge for anything. There are a few threeds on the board about them and they seem hit or miss. Use the search function and see for yourself. Personaly though, the quality of their work and other things about the company would steer me away from them. There are plenty of great artist and prop makers here at the THD that put out quality work, I'd recomend going with one of them for anything you need.

    Have a good one,

This reminds me of my former plan (my avatar) from KOTOR comics. That's from the beginning of the invation to republic space in-universe-wise, and thus an Old-Crusader.

If you change the chest and the knees a bit, it'll be much more Old-Crusadery than any I've seen here :-)

    Looks good!

Any pics out there of them?

lol, actually your Avatar inspired me a bit in my design.

I see work like these designs and I wonder what I've been doing with my time. I'm dying to see this fleshed out.

I've been considering a cowl-type garment, despite how this might cover my chest plates, like in your brown-scheme design. Any ideas about how to bring this to life? I've done limited work with medieval costuming, and nothing there deals with stretchy material, so neck holes are a real issue. How do you design the neck area to get the right drape without being too bunchy or making it look like a turtle neck sweater?

If you adapted a bishop's mantal (spelling?) pattern to use as a cloth pattern, then attached a standard neck seal, that might help make your poncho thing both form fitting and unbunched up at the neck line.

I like your poncho thing I was thinking about something like this but I am holding out to see if I can find spandax for mine.

    Thanks all

I was thinking of using a denim type material maybe... Something alittle heavier... I've also figured that with the Mantle I don't need the collar piece.

I think the jumpsuit color is much better now. opinions?
