    My Desert Mando

I haven't really posted any progress on here for my Mando so it's time I did. I'm working on a desert sniper because I've allways like sniping in video games and I spent a year out in the deserts of Kuwait (I kind of got used to it out there) so I put the two together and *presto*

Here's a link to my painted armor, it's not weathered yet but I'm working on it. My armor is made of 16 gauge steel from old Army wall lockers I got from my NG armory, so I guess you could say it's real (but NOT functional) military gear.

Because one is going to have something like this on it and I needed a flat surface to attach them.

This is looking like it is going to end up really awesome. Reminds me of this picture I found from galaxies.

I know yours is a custom mando, but I think it is cool when people do different color schemes for Boba; something he may use in special situations, like MOW's Hoth Fett. This could be Boba's special desert armor.

    Good Idea!

So here is my sniper rifle. I think it kindasorta looks like it might be a Verp, what do you guys and gals think?

I am going to loose the magazine and add a bi-pod and scope. I was thinking of painting the whole thing desert tan and maybe wrapping it with strips of tan cloth. Does anyone else have some ideas?

    Re: My Desert Mando

I just bought a used size 46 R desert tan flightsuit for less than $40. It's a bit short in the arms (about 4 inches from my wrist) but that will be covered by my gauntlets (so will the bluish stain on the left cuff). Pics will come soon, my camera is M.I.A. right now.

I'm thinking of adding something like a poncho, kind of like the one Luke puts on as he's heading to the Falcon in ANH. It would actually be split so I could undo a clasp and uncover my front leaving the poncho covering my back like a cape of sorts. Any thoughts?

I use the same rifle with my mando. Has a very techy look to it. I modded the riffle a bit, added on some greeblies and such.

I'm going to but I left it in while I paint so it doesn't lose it's shape, something I learned when Marek cut his out totally before the lens was ready to go in.

    Re: My Desert Mando

It's a Rubies helmet so it's vinyl and if it sits on a hard surface in any kind of heat, gravity will push the mandibles up so the top of the "T" will get all squinty. When Marek and I painted our helmets at the same time he cut the whole lens area out while I left it as in the pic above, his warped and mine didn't, so now that's just how I work on a Rubies.

I masked off the helmet last night and I'm going to paint the second color on today, pics will follow.

That helmet looks pretty decent, lol just need to add a lot of sand to it if ya ask me. Oh, because I bet you are gonna cut the rest of visor out, heres a few words of warning. The mandables are gonna go everywhichway but the direction ya need them in lol! So be prepared for that.

Hey I really like the paint job! Those colors really work well together. Definately a military or desert look. Even the second pic (with nothing taped to it) looks good. With the second color on the mandables it has a more mandalorian look, but the second pic one could have worked as well.

may i sugest haveing the flap on the inside instead of out?.. the imperial snow trooper i think has it so the front mask appears "inside" the helmet.

    just an idea

And a good idea too, that would make it easier for me to attach the cloth to the helmet and I could use less cloth too. I'll try it out.

Here's a full body shot, sans armor and with a painted in visor.

    Re: My Desert Mando

Today I weathered my helmet and armor, but my camera is AWOL. I misted them with a flat black spray paint and a red oxide primer, both paints are walmart's $.98 brand. The weathering might not show up in pictures because of the flash. I also used some grease for smudges. The red oxide looks like it might be sand/dust from Geonosis so I'm thinking of finding some kind of paint that looks like Geonosian blood.

    *EDIT*
Pics are in my HV&M gallery, they're at the bottom.

Thats basically how I had to mask mine off as well, only with white and black instead of tan and brown for colors. It was a pain in the butt trying to get the tape to match the curves precisely, but it came out well in the end. Desert tan is a pretty cool color idea, now that I think about it, I dont really know why I decided to do white....lol

I notice that youve got the same problem as I do with that Rubies....its just a tad too small for our tall bodies.....that neck-cloth thing might help in hiding some of that gap between the shoulders and base of the helmet. Looks great man, now all you need is an m16a4 and we can ship this mando off to Iraq

I did a rough masking and got the details by cutting the tape with a small exato knife.

ah i see, that sounds like a good idea.

I think a sandstorm/wind blown look would be really cool on this helmet....IMO the weathering on the T shaped part around the T Visor looks more realistic than that of the rest of the helmet, but I'm sure youre far from finished....keep it up!

The flash on my camera doesn't do my weathering justice. Have you seen the pics in my gallery on HVM?

Just a thought, but maybe to add a more realistic feel to the weathering, other then the main part of the helmet, adding like that slight brown haze on the vizor you would get from the sand. Maybe just around the edges of the visor.

My vision is bad enough, I don't want to mess with the lens. I like to think my helmet has the "windshield wiper" effect from Republic Commandos.

As for the weathering, it is weathered but it's subtle, it just gets washed out by the flash. Jun and Jonich have seen it on my webcam so they've had the best view of it aside from seeing it in person. Jun, Jonich, can I get a witness?

Just curious, but why is the base wide like that?

Looks a little too flared out still. RF should be at less of an angle. Almost vertical.
Could use a couple paint washes to give it that gritty look.
I understand that it's a work in progress.
    Looking pretty good so far.

I agree that, by it's self, it does have a bit more flair than most but on my frame I think it looks fine.

After trying on as much as I could today I realized that I can't use the flightsuit I have, it's too small and restricts my movement.

Using the toothbrush bristles flick technique on the mandibles or upper cheeks would add some lifelike dimension too. There's a thread about it here at TDH somewhere. Great job.

I was thinking of doing that with some shade of green for Geonosian blood/fluids.

After playing RepCom again I must correct myself and say Geonosian blood is orange.

Maybe it depends on which ones you kill.
