my custom heavy mando
mkai. i decided to start a new thread on my armor progress since my previous one was... well a bit messy. it also gives me the oppertunity to properly introduce it, and myself.
i am 18 years old and live in Norway (Viking power!)and have been a star wars geek all my life. i also love baldur's gate and Metallica and i hope to implement some of that into my armor. this will be my first ever armor, infact probably my first costume aver too:doh i spent some weeks looking through this forume looing at you peoples most impressive work before i decided that i wanted to take my own direction, meaning a more "heavy" mando look.
some thing like this:
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1234122668
all though at this point im considering dark grey instead of white.
i also want to make all the holster/backpack/other fancy pockets and whatnot of leather. just so it want look to cloney
i have decided on a helmet design, although i have no idea of how to make it yet (help is welcomed;))
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1234122883
and...
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1234123135
sorry about the cuality, they are hand-drawn and i used my phone to just take a pic of it.
will put out some pics on how far iv actually gotten as soon as i can

Re: my custom mando!:D

Re: my costum
Looks pretty good for your start. Is that PVC weld your using? Since you are going with full enclosure, might I suggest using piano hinges to make your armor open and close easier?
-
Re: my costum
-
Re: my costum
piano hinges?the thighs arent gonne open, they just slide on:P the torso part however needs to open if i want to get it on, but i have solved that problem

Re: my costum
I must say that is really cool. The mando/clone look really seems to suit you.
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1234123825
May I ask where you got these. Because I am looking to something like that for my own mandalorian armor. I think they look good.
Good job and keep up the good work. I can't wait to see the finished product.

actually i made those myself from scratch out of the oransje PVC Pipes (just asked a local hardwarestoe if they had some leftovers). i first made the bracers then taped some sheets ov paper or cardboard on them to measure the length and add the shape i wanted. then i transfered that pattern on to the PVC pipes and cut them out. finally i heated up the PVC shapes and shaped them to fit the bracers (what aver you call it, the armor on your forearm).;)
-
Re: my costum
Well that is a really good job on the armor. I clap at it LOL! I may push something around that.

Re: my costum

i might have found some thick cardboard i can use and try to make one. in that case ill start next weekend
-
Re: my custom mando, WIP
ok so iv started the scratch build cardboard bucket. i use a thicker carboard than Antman used (all hail that Tutorial!!:D) however so far it works splendidly. this is what iv done today in i am quite happy bout it, but i have one question. the edge that iv marked with red, is it supposed to be there? the rest of the "rim" that goes around back looks perfeckly fit
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1237650642
and...
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1237650764
haha this is just the sink i used to dip the entire structure in. i needed the cardboard to be completely soaked in order for it to bend properly

Re: my custom heavy mando

http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1240774794
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1240774332

Re: my custom heavy mando
It's just cereal boxes. I really made it for the fun of it. And to complete my cereal box Boba, LoL.
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
cool, sounds easy to work with. im using 4-5mm hard cardboard and have to use an electric saw to cut it:D... should have used cereal boxes
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
oki finally i had a few days to work on my bucket
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1242650946 http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1242651081
at the back there will be a custom center piece joining the two "horns" that i added
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1242651122
this is with the range finder and custom earpiece (not done btw, there will be some kind of small pyramid shape on the top of it)

-
Re: my custom heavy mando
AWESOME MAN!!! That looks sooo cool! :D
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
wow thanks!:D
btw: does any one know of a cheap way of making the visor? i though of modifying the visors for motorcycle helmets
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
Try something like this:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=46539
You can get them with a black tint, and they work REALLY well. I made several helmets using visors from T-visors.com and then did a couple more with these. They work just as well as the $25.00 ones from T-visors.
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
wow they look great thanks
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
This armor is turning out really cool! I love original ideas, and this is a really cool one! Keep up the good work!

-
Re: my custom heavy mando
wow i tiger, love it!:P thanks for the compliments everyone, didnt ecpect it really
so good and bad news. the paint job went really well (i think) but i havents started the details on it yet, with a brush all. however i piece of my "tiger beard" fell off!!!:O so ill improvise a little and putting on "a box" see pics bellow and ull see
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1244143511 http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1244143545
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1244143448 http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1244143388
btw: those pieces of cardboard are just really rough and took me less than 5 min
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
so i started the "detailed weathering" using left over warhammer paint:D
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1244201821
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1244201980
BTW has anyone ever thought of using chainmail? im considering using it on my left arm between the armor plates, armpit and alboq joints.
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
hehe i need some help deciding on a paint scheme again:P
1 or 2? or maybe you most excellent artists have some ideas?
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1244881554
Paint rocks!:P
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
darian ordo over at mando mercs uses a chainmail hood. we've roundtabled chainmail over there over and over. the general consensus was the time involved in making it vs the protective ability combined with the fact that really no known star wars characters use it, it should be used sparingly. we don;t like to tell our members they can't use something, although on some things we must, we would rather ask for heavy mods or limited use so as not to stifle creativity. based on known star wars canon and eu, it would seem that most of the protective undersuits worn by various troopers/warriors in the swu would offer similar protection as chainmail.
all that said, i think if you used it sparingly with your heavy concept or as a dressing, say a kama, it would look great. i use it sparingly on my ggloves and gauntlets.
great build btw, i've been watching it's progress. really dig the helmet although it has a heavy clone feel to me, probably bcause of the "mouth" area.
keep up the good work!
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
jup that was my fears as well, that no known star wars charackter has used chain mail. i still dont know
hehe the clone/mando cross was intentional. my friend called it the missing link:P
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
Your Costume looks wonderful! I think I prefer the second paint scheme to the first. Keep up the good work, and post an update soon!

Looks awesome. And with the designs, I like the first one. The second one just is a bit to plain for my liking. Maybe you could add some stripes or somthing onto it. Keep it up!

Re: my custom heavy mando
ahem... it would seem i am was stupid enough to get a job couple of weeks ago and thus havents been able to work on my beskar as much as i want to. this is what little i have done and photographed (i also have a shin ready to paint, attached the smaller plates on the chest and started on a backback)
the new chin design, or "box" still requires my attention with paint and anlso some vents or lits. the range finder just needs the black "visor" for the slits, and i still need a preferably dark green visor
http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1247252660 http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...g?t=1247252748
RF up:) the "hose thingy" still needs paint and some fillerwork.

oh and kal'ika, if you want i would be honored if you drew it:)

Re: my custom heavy mando
I really like the Range finder :)
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
I hope its not going to be one of those buckets where its hard to see out of because of all the stuff put on the side and possibly in front of it!
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
Holy ****! this is going to turn out to be one of those suits that actually scare people who see you in it. You've definitely got some heavy metal influences in there. And vikings rock. When you finish you should do another bucket that has some kind of horns on it lol.
Keep up the great work man!
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
thansk again guys. so far iv had no problems seeing out of it, all the "things" from the range finder just blurs up and is almost invisible.
oh and a viking themed mando would be awesome! with lots of chain mail and a vibro axe
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
yeah Creon no prob, throw up a request for me in my Custom Mando Art thread so I don't forget it and I'll add u to the que... I've got about 3 WIPs right now, I'd be happy to work on it tho.

chainmail vest and kama, and the pattern on the left is the grey rim around the plates and face

Re: my custom heavy mando
hey all! iv been stationed close enough to home that i can work on my beskar'gam inb the weekends now :D and after looking through the forum at all of the fantastic builds iv gotten the inspiration to finish my build! :)
gotta get started, lots of work todo!
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
I noticed the piece on the bottom of the visor, kinda like a chin guard or something. Is there a template for that? If so could someone PM me. Cause it would be a bloody waste to custom fab that out of aluminum and find out there are templates. Haha, thanks
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
wow looks great mate cant wait too get mine done
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
Sorry stride, no templates. all made from scratch:P
thanks fallout!

Re: my custom heavy mando
Creon, I LOVE IT!!!!! Awesome work, man. :D And that new concept thing is really cool. I've always wondered what would happen is Mando's wore chain-mail. ;)
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
If mandos wore chainmail........... It would turn into a completely epic and amazing armour set............. LIGHTSABRE PROOF CHAIN-MAIL..... I love how this kit came out
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
:p stupid question here...isnt a mando flight suit designed to be a space suit too...how would chain mail protect the wearer from space vacume
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
maybe the chainmail goes on the outside...
-
Re: my custom heavy mando
x.x eh...i guess its all personal preference...what i might find somewhat pointless others might find cooll...best wishes with the chain mail kit...might do some follow ups on it just for the sake of seeing how it turns out

ok so i ordered a belt with puches and a boba fett armor plate package from ebay. Cut the cod piece as you can see in teh pics. the white new lower circular form on the chest plate is actually the collar piece, and the lower abdominal (just above the belt) is the butt piece. attached the diamond on the right shoulder piece, and the middle shoulder pieces you can see is from the original Fett chest pieces. using the original back plate and abdominal plate. planning for original knee pads
still waiting for a black visor.
