    Jul 28, 2009, 2:42 PM - My Armor Problems #1

So I wore my new Mando armor to comicon and... well the armor kind of fell off. The adhesive i used didn't work out for me (super glue + hot glue). I was tring to get the armor to vest by using Chicago crews (screw rivets).
So i need help with 3 things
    1. how can i get metal to PVC (my armor is made of PVC sheets.. easy to form and thick enought to look good on me)
    2. any other suggestions for getting armor to vest?
    3. i need a new visor, anyone have any for sale?

I would like to do this again at next years comicon or any other events comeing up. I was talking to a Mando Merc and he used velcro, but he said it would probably need replacing after the con. I want to try to have a system that will last a long time.

and yes i will post what few pictures i have of my armor when i get the pics from my friends, it was phase 1, i plan on phase 2 to look more like i wanted.

    vode an.

I had the same problem vod with the plates falling off...

    1. Use JB Weld. Wroks AMAZING. Grind the top of the chicago screw flat first (So it sits correctly) then use the adhesive. I had to take a hammer to mine to get the chicago screws off when I replaced them with snaps.

    2. snaps. line 20 or 24 from Tandy Leather Factory.

    3. ...try: http://www.t-visor.com/ or go to Harbour Freight and get a faceshield and tint that. really easy and far cheaper than one from T-visor.

P.S.- I'd like to see pics! Be sure to post them!!!

I had the same problem, and all the advice A'den is giving you is GREAT.

1 minor change, use sticky-back velcro and when gluing it obn the dabric use mighty mend-it or fabric goop. Its nearly impossible to get off.

Snaps you say? i herd this was the way to go and that Joanns would have them. They have the same procedure as the screws?
Whats the advantage of snaps over screws?

Were can i get tinting thats not the size of a window? I have clear plexy glass and a heat gun so i just need the tinting.

There are a whole bunch of tutorials and tid-bits on here as far as methods. Try the search. Seem to be able to find pleanty about using bolts, but the snaps ones seem to be a bit more scattered, so heres how I do my snaps. (nevermind my shoddy looking duct tape on my shest lights!!!!) LOL

Many use either bolts or snaps. I guess I always had good luck using snaps, so I never switched, but eventually I may, since that is what was done on the real suit. I get my snaps at Walmart. I've always had my snaps hold very well though. Get yourself some thin styrene sheets, and cut to shape on your armour, then punch holes in it for your snaps. Put your snaps in, and then glue down your styrene pieces to the armour. I always use plastiweld epoxy, and I would think that would hold well to your PVC plates as well. On the other end, get some elastic strips. Attach the other side of the snap, and line up & sew to the vest.

What I like about this method, is that if i screw up on my placement of an armour plate, its pretty easy to rip out the stiching on the elastic and reposition to re-sew. Some will say that you do get a nice flush fit with the bolt in method, (which I imagaine is true,) but if you do a good enough job placing your snaps and then fitting them to elastic on the vest, you will get a pretty good fit also. Just take your time.
