Mandalorian Merc MONTROSS comic style Added photos 12th Aug 13

New Hunter
Hey guys,

Well I am going to tackle my FIRST ever Star Wars costume.

I am a member of the UKG and Troop in Resi Evil UMBRELLA Corp uniforms from several of the films, Crossbones from the Marvel Comic. Also have in the works:- BSG Blacks wip, SG Black Offworld wip, SAAB Marine wip and ALIENS USCM BDUs.

So thinking of options it was down to two, one is a little too expensive for me at present the other being Montross, and thinking as I am 6ft 5" MONTROSS seems perfect. As he seems to be taller than Jaster and the others in the comic which works for me.

So have some ref material to work from However as this is my First Mando and first SW would like to get input on this too.

So my questions are:-

Anyone actually done Montross comic version?

Casting your expert eyes over the images, would it be possible for a run through on my list and correct if made mistakes?

List:

Mando lid ala Jango style.
Mando Chest armour.
Blue Turtle neck with adjusted sleeves to be short sleeved.
Blue TK style Pauldrons (adjusted to style).
Blue Cloak.
Blue pants in a Vader-esque verticel padded style.
Brown Leather Belt 2" thick, silver male/female buckle.
Brown Leather belt 2" thick, Silver Skull.
Brown Leather Jango style thigh holster pair.
Light Brown waist Sash.
High leg boots GREY? with Silver plating at Toe and top of foot.
Blue/grey Wrap on Boots upper with Black Banding.
Blue/Grey Wrap on forearms with banding.
Blue fingerless gloves.
Jet pack (seems to be typical Mando style).

So that about right guys?

Calarth_Montross.jpg reference4.jpg

Again would really like to hear what you guys think and if the list is about right :D

No one did i Montross so far. I once considered doing a Montross beause no one did it - but my first armor was already heavyly montross-inspired and with deathwatch and another upcoming project i already have enough blue-Grey armors, so antoher one would be a bit boring for my Collection. (thats why i started Jaster Mereel at one point) XD

A realy good Reference might be the Actionfigure

The-Legacy-Collection-Montross_Big_2.jpg

It may not suit every panel perfect -> but montross looks diffrent on every Panell aswell. So i guess thats some sort of Freedom you have.

Chestarmor, Backplate and Cod is normal Jangostyle. But Shoulder-knee and Footplates are custom. So you might find a form using some paper and try a bit.
Turtleneck? - You may look for something less casual. Some died-out Blue Collar workingjacket with some sewings would work. A sturdy and heavy cloth for a sturdy and heavy guy.
The Vaderstyle pants. Vader Pants are normaly made out of artificial leather - that is shiney and is getting hot. Just to warn you. Montross wears his Pants skintight with some strappings around. Estimate a major Sewing-job on this one particulary.
For what do you need TK Pauldrons?

Holsters: Montross has huge Custom Hog-lever Blasters. Jango-holsters wont do the Job.

Another Question: Do you Lift? Just asking, because doing a Montross is alot more about physical Shape then any other longsleeve Mando-costumes. :D

Jaro krieg,
Thanks for the input my friend.

Not sure using a toy figure is a feature that is allowed when putting in a costume for clearance with the UKG, though something to take on board. Due to the very nature they usually do NOT get it right with action figures (I customise action figures so know this very well).

The TK pauldrons are to modify for the shoulder armour he wears, seems the best option?
Holsters Yeah your right Jango`s are too sleek, so thicker ones required.

Under suit I have two ideas and waiting to hear on that.
First option is Top and Bottom set due to the Vader-esque style the trousers (BTW no reason they have to be Leather like, cloth would work as Mando`s use cloth under suits?) are in to the plain top.
Second option is again the Vader-esque piece style ONE piece, sleeveless. The the Vest with armour attached for the upper?

Also the OPEN SEASON does not always portray the pants as tight. Fair few cells have them standard baggy of a Mando if you will.

Also on further close inspection, it appears Montross actually has knee padding in the same style as the Trousers than actual armoured pieces.

This is what makes Montross interesting, that he is such a break away from the typical Mando look.

As for lifting, have done in the past and am currently building them back up. FYI here is me doing my Marvel Comic CROSSBONES

afaik the 501th has the rule of 3 sources to accept a new costume in the first place. ctionfigure is one acceptable source - but its merely just the proof that the charackter exists.
Finding a Compromise between Figure and every Panell seems reasonable. I also see the point with this montross figure in particular - the Belt and Torso is custom and very good partrayed. But the Legs are just colorswapped from Mandalor-the Ultimate: (
251_mandalore1.jpg
)

i Still doubt that the Pauldron would be a good way. - more a waste of twoo good pauldrons. except you mean the TK shoulderplates of the armor and not the leather thingies connected to the neck. ^^
Well a TK-Shoulderarmor with grinded down surface and a rectangulare cut at the lower edges might work.

Cloth for the Pants work. For the "pinstripes" you can attach a second layer of cloth with vertical sewing lines. - And no, A Cord-pants is too square for Montross! :D

Knee's: now you mention it. At a closer look they remind me on the WW2 Kneepads of Fallschirmjäger (
Bundesarchiv_Bild_101I-562-1172-04A,_Italien,_Fallschirmjäger_bei_Ausbildung,_Feldwebel.jpg
) pit with a vertical and not horizontal sewing line

@Liftig: good, you have atleast the right figure. *thumps-up*

EDT: BTW, is it only me who finds the likeness of Comic-Montross and the TCW-Deathwatch odd?

The Blue-Grey Color's with red rectangular Markings?

Thanks for the pointers and actually did not know 501st allow figures as part of the mix for base of the figure. As said this will be my first UKG Star Wars costume (as the rest are none Star Wars).
Will need to get registered with the 501st due to this being a Star Wars character/costume for clearance :D

TK shoulder plates is what I meant, sorry got the TK parts named wrong, thought they were the pauldrons/bells. So you can see where I am going with them now yes?

HAHAHA I did not even consider Cord pants LOL Though I like your idea of the 2 part cloth build on them.

Knee pads spot on and had actually thought of them too ;)

Thanks on the thumbs up on lift ;)

Now as for your comparison of Comic Montross and TCW Deathwatch. Methinks that may be the case of inspiration from Montross in OPEN SEASON and implemented those colours to the animated DEATHWATCH?

Well I have parts coming in to get cracking on this project.

Thanks to two fellow UKG members I have a "T" visor to pick up in the next few weeks :D and I have a Jet pack sourced.

Some hunting I found torso armour BUT think I will need to make a better set myself and more appropriate as it is too small for me. Moreso now wizardofflight helped size armour for my 6ft 5".

My Fiberglass helmet I bought last year.

Chest Armour.

Sketches of His weapons I am doing.
This one I have sketched twice as if you look in my first post with the two images, same weapon, however they are slightly different even though same Mission at this point in "OPEN SEASON".
img015_zps913b53f7.jpg

Two pistols they had Montross using. A larger one and the smaller one. They are actually used on two different missions within the 4 parter "Open Season". I like the larger of the two.

Any progress on this? I'm working on ordering up the necessary bits and pieces to do this same thing. I think I'm going to skip the rifle and the do the pistols like the game / action figure but do the armor / other gear based directly on the comics. I'm also skipping the jetpack although I was thinking of making one and using it as a drink dispenser / cooler for NY Comic Con ($8 for budweiser there).

I still can't figure out whether or not the shoulders in the comics (sounds like you're going more action figure inspired there) are a flak vest (boba style) or more like the action figure (but without the rectangular cutouts). Either way, they definitely aren't the traditional mando shoulders. Can't find any other mandos with similar shoulder armor.

With the pants / shirt, I really think it looks more like the flightsuit style that most mandos use rather than the shirt / pants combo that you're thinking of. I was thinking of grabbing a used military flight suit (navy blue) and modifying the collar, knees and sleeves to match the comic. Torso armor seems pretty straightforward.

Regarding the belt, it almost looks like its a kidney belt like the medieval style armor that was designed to allow mobility and protect a little better from hits. Something like this:

roman-gladiator-leather-kidney-belt-2019-p.jpg

This image shows a better detail on it:
356890-182548-montross.jpg

Regardless, Montross is going to be a tough one to do because of the variations in his armor / gear between the comic, game, and action figure. I have a 2 piece Jango helmet on the way, I'll do that up right and I'm going to attach some sort of loop to connect it to the belt so its there but I don't need to carry it around all day. I'm also probably going to add a dent to the back of the helmet as per the following image.
154913_102792536458870_1458446_n.jpg

Oh, and I'm not quite your size but I'm hitting the gym hard. Currently 235 lb and 6'2". Hoping to hit 250 by the time Comic Con comes around. That should fill out the rest of the parts of Montross' arsenal that I can't quite "make".

Wolfsburg, the Galil grip is such a nice medium between the AK and AR style grips.

I think I was wrong about the shoulder armor. I blew up some of the images from the comic and it definitely looks like its actual armor, not just a heavy flak vest. I think the shots where it looks like its a flak vest might be the cape overlapping the armor. The armor looks just like the action figure, which is good because I was wondering why they changed it. Sorry about the chain of images but these will probably help out OP a bit. I'm new here so if anything is not kosher with the TDH TOS or anything please let me know and I'll fix it.

A lot of family/real world things so not been doing much :(

On a positive note, Now has "T" Visor :D and Heatshock is coming round tomorrow (Wed) and we are doing some Helm mods.

More so as I only recently noticed the side recess vents. So looking at 3-4 ways we have to tackle them.

Helmet build Underway.

This is what I have been doing with some guidelines from Heatshock (as I have never done anything like this LOL)....

First off, dremel off the built in arch on the right side.

Also worked on the jet pack.

Now the thrusters fit and swivel. Also added a rod to the rocket to insert into the jp body. May switch to a metal rod.

Well helmet is well under way, Jet pack well under way and now the armour is underway.

Thank's to WoF who was kind enough to scale up plans for a 6ft 5 individual. I finally got around to starting this and being brave and doing it in Aluminium.

So photos.....

So started but a long way to go.

So quick questions.

A, Best way to attach Aluminium armour to vest?
B, What is the best way to tackle the groin armour?

Look forward to input from you guys.

Worked a little more on the helmet this morning and dremelling on the Jet pack.

So helmet. Test fit of stalk and stalk housing to Lid.

Please LMK your thoughts, as not sure if this is the right way or if could do it better etc.

Very ambitious! I think metal is ideal, but hard to work with. It looks like you're doing just fine. I've always been impressed by Montross and think he is a cool character.
Probably my favorite scene in the game Bounty Hunter is when he's hunting some guy and traps him against a cliffside. The guy pleads for his like saying, "I'll pay you double, triple, anything, just please don't kill me! I'm worth more alive!" and Montross responds coldy, "You're worth enough, dead." and he aims his blaster at the camera and you see the fire build in the barrel and hear the sound of the shot as it goes black.
