Montross

    Montross

    Hi there,

I am just starting my build on Montross. I have often thought about doing a Mando, but none have ever captured my attention. A few people recommended Montross ( I had not heard of him ) So i purchased the SW Open season comics and was immediately taken by him. I am concentrating primarily on the weapons, but would ask a question front he experts

    1. In the comic i see no leg holsters for side arms ( would you agree )
    2. I see pictures in the comic that look to depict he has no shoulder armour, his shoulders look crumpled at the bottom like cloth and have tears in them after a grenade
    3. he has dredd stye knee armour ?
    4. he has mid shin high boots

Any one able to confirm any of the above it would be greatly appreciated

    Re: Montross

It's years since I read the comics but i do own the action figure. The figure has thigh holsters and twin pistols. The knees are different from Boba/Jango, but the style looks more like clone knees/elbows, including the ribbed straps at the rear. He appears to have wraps bound with leather straps around his forearms and lower legs. The shoulders are also non-standard and are more curved/bell shaped than the regular Mando wedge shape. The boots have an upturned steel toe-cap and a small plate covering the instep, with what looks like a Rebel/Imperial belt buckle on top, attached to a strap that runs under the boot, to hold everything in place.
It might be a good idea to hunt around for a figure to buy as a reference. He comes in a Opens Seasons comic twin pack with Jaster Mereel.

    Re: Montross

If you would like, I can post up my entire proposal for 501st approval of Montross that I submitted to the now prior LMO. I stated both what I felt the CRL would be as well as my reasoning behind each aspect of the character. I did A LOT of hard analysis of the comic and came to conclusions based on it. I feel it can save you the trouble I had to go through!

    Re: Montross

This is my analysis of the character known as "Montross" from the EU Comic "Open Seasons." This character is also portrayed as the rival of Jango Fett in Star Wars: Bounty Hunter the video game. Also, an action figure of Montross was sold in a comic two-figure pack, depicting Montross in the comic style, but with differences in particular areas. This is a current project of mine in the works and I would like to have this costume's approval be decided upon so that by my costume's completion, legion approval will be a smooth process.

The design I am focusing on is that of the comic style. This is my analysis of every aspect and my basis for my current build.

I will evaluate the comic reference available and compare and contrast between different scenes. Action figure comparison in

    Helmet:

Paint Scheme: The helmet for the most part is consistent in colors and overall appearance. It is a two-tone blue (Jango Fett's helmet colors) and semi-polished silver dome/lower cheeks and sides. The paint scheme has the lighter blue on the mandibles, however, on each side, just before the ear caps, the blue "stops" leaving a silver space open. The ear caps are the same shad of dark blue as the inner cheeks. The trim detail that runs along the back continues in the light blue as well. The area the ear caps sit upon appear to remain silver as well. On the dome (wearer's right side) close to the forehead portion, is a yellow painted design in the shape of an "M". Rangefinder box is also dark blue

Ear Caps: The Range Finder side ear cap is up for debate (the left side remains the same for the most part), but one "style" is more consistent. In one frame, there is a closeup of the range finder ear that shows it as having multiple grills, while in every other frame, the style changes (see reference pictures) to a more basic design, which remains relatively consistent from then on.

    Visor: Black

Action figure helmet is consistent with paint scheme, however it's a repainted boba fett helmet, and has movie-style ear caps

    Torso:

    - Chest Armor: Also drawn in a comic fashion (oversized) these would be better to remain in the movie style. Silver w/ red lined box spanning between both pectoral plates
    - Shoulder bells: Similar in shape to that of a scout trooper, but larger. He retains the armor in the beginning of the comic, however, in one scene after surviving a grenade, it appears that the shoulder bells perhaps blew off. They are in a matching dark blue, with a red square detail. Along the inner-side of the bell's edge, there is an angular section cut out as well.

Chest armor is identical, however figure retains boba style dents. Shoulder bells are the same shape/paint scheme/design, however, it has a suggest leather strap that wraps the bicep and attaches to the shoulder bells.

    Back armor

    - Not seen in any frames.

    Present on figure

    - Cod piece: it is present in the comic however, the detail/fashion can be assumed to be that of a jango/boba style cod.

    Same with the action figure.

    - Knee pads: Some images suggest that he is wearing knee pads UNDER the flight suit, other scenes don't appear so, do debatable.

Figure has distinguishable knee armor, silver in color

    - Shins and boot plates: Early in the comic, it appears he is wearing both and one main reference image towards the end clearly shows a shin plate similar to that of Jango fett's. Boot plates are debatable.

No shin armor, but black strips of material wrapped around the shin/calves. Boot plates present and held with black strap

    - Boots: Cannot be determined to be anything specific

Unspecific, dark grey/black boots. Heavy tread

    Vest

    - Darker blue/Jango style flak vest. No deviations

    Same for figure

    Arms

    - Forearms have an arm-glove, in a light shade of blue. Undetermined as to what material but appears to be form-fitting and soft.

Grey material in the same pattern as comic, however, has what appears to be 3 black straps w/ buckles (similar to anikan's glove/arm gauntlet in ROTS

    Flight Suit

    - Navy blue color. Short sleeved. Vertical lines from the waist down (like vader's pants).

Same shade of blue, and short sleeved, but no vertical line details.

    Cape

    - Light blue, same shade as forearm gloves.Covers the entire back, tattered/weathered. Attachment varies, on frame showing around the neck another showing it attached to the front of the collar armor.

Proper matching shade, hangs around the neck, extends further down then the comic

    JetPack

    - Not much comic reference available. Known to be mainly silver. Action figure reference suggested as a viable source.

All silver with dark blue highlights.

    Belt section

    Girth Belt

    - Brown in color, plain in design. Cover mid-section and top of cod piece. Hanging on the rear is 4 separate strips of material (suggested to be leather), reaching down to the lower calf area.

Slightly more details, not very discernible

    Main belt

    - Runs down the center of girth belt and meets to a rectangular belt buckle (silver). Overall design is similar to that of a jedi's belt rig. Has several pouches, 2 small and two large.

    Identical to comic

    Holster straps

    - Straps of leather that hang at the side (suggested that these are used to hold holsters up, as he has two duel blasters, this is seen on the action figure). No holsters or duel blasters present, but these straps hang on the side of the leg in a loose manner. Both holster straps connect in the front-center just below the main belt, and have a brown "skull" emblem over top this connection.

Identical to comic, however, the figure has holsters as well as duel blasters.

Additions with the figure: Appears to be thigh plates underneath the holsters.

This next part is what my build plan is:

Helmet: Movie base helmet w/ matching comic paint scheme. Ear caps are my interpretation of the comic style (see attached photo of one I finished sculpting). I decided to use this design because it was seen more then once in the comic VS the "close" up that was only one frame. A secondary "closeup" was of this consistent design, which was the basis for my sculpt. Please note, that ear piece is not finished!
    Torso

Chest armor: Cold cast jango style plates w/ comic paint. Comic style would be oversized and not look well in the real world

Vest: Jango style flak vest w/ out shoulder flaps

Shoulder bells: Comic style, no strap like action figure.

Back plate: No back plate, back will be covered by cape and jetpack and won't be seen beneath these two items.

Cape: Hang around lower neck and extend to no further then mid-thigh level

Jetpack: All cold-cast, with blue highlights using action figure's jetpack as reference

Forearm gloves: Light blue material (matching cape), form fitting

Flight suit: Navy blue w/ vertical lines sewn. Short sleeve

    Belts:
-Plain girth belt w/ single 1" leather belt down the center meeting at the front center with comic accurate belt buckle. 4- 2" wide leather straps will hang off rear of this belt. Plain girth belt because it's comic accurate. Action figure's girth belt is pretty unclear (random)
-Lower belt w/ 2 small and two larger leather pouches.

-Holsters straps will hang at the sides, comic style, meeting at the front-center w/ skull detail. Will eventually make holsters/ duel pistols, however, I believe for approval purposes, it is not needed.

Cod piece: Jango style cod piece
Knees: No external knee plates like figure. Alternative would be to wear bulky knee pads on the inside of the flight suit to give it the appearance of the comic style

Shins: Jango style shin armor. Seen in two separate frames of the comic

Boot armor: Unsure if needed. Only really noticeable in one frame. Up for debate
Boots: I personally own a pair of kenneth cole ankle boots with the movie accurate jango soles which I planned on using.

This was my analysis of the comic style Montross. Please let me know your thoughts. Images attached below. Thank you for your time!

    Re: Montross

The issue I have is the flight suit, in some frames the suit appears to have lines on it. My thoughts on this are as follows.

1- No lines by one artist as every other mandalorian I can think of had a flight suit and this would be the case for Montross as he is a true mandalorian. This was also carried over on to the action figure

2 - lines added but are more in keeping with very rough muscle lines in his flight suit

3 - distinctive lines (no idea why)

4 - Padded shoulder armour (I personally think this is lazy artwork and was intended to be he actual deltoid)

5 - No shoulder armour (man after my own heart, just a simple TANK)

6 - TK/TB Shoulder Bells (artist thought he needed some armour)

What I would like to know is would a standard flight suit of the correct colour be ok for approval. I personally think he would have worn the same style flight suit as his fellow comrades.

I would like your thoughts please

    Re: Montross

The lines on the flight-suit are blatantly on there, so I don't feel that's really debatable since it's shown in pretty much the majority of the frame's he's present in.

As for the gloves, yes, you're correct, that was just bad wording on my part. I've already got my arm gloves, but I may get another set made, though I feel the color is just about spot on.

For the flighsuit, I took a few of the images and using the MS paint tool, took samples from the comic itself and color matched as best as possible, however, since it's a drawing and the shading affects it, I came to the decision to use an almost navy blue color (not exactly) but there needs to be a contrast between the blue on the flight suit and the blue on the cape/arm gloves.

Oh yes the lines are definitely there. But they are also missing in some of the other frames. The 5th picture shows them more like quad muscle lines. Plus the action figure does not have them. I'm just trying to establish if they are optional (both are there) or they are a must. For me, I think to change the legs to a different style altogether when compared to every other Mando would look strange. Just my opinion though and I am open to replies especially a fellow Montross mate

The issue with the figure though is that it's not entirely accurate to the comic. The fact that it's mostly a repainted figure, just slightly modified doesn't help either, so I feel that you're gonna have to rely on the actual comic reference VS the figure. The only thing's I'd take from the figure really is the paint scheme on the jetpack because it's not really clear in the comic. However, the fact that the comic has such a consistent representation of the said lines, at least in my opinion, trumps the figure.

To add to this, the figure has completely different details to which don't match up to the comic at all, such as the knees, shins and the arms. It's almost it's own variation on the comic reference, but the main elements are based on the OS comic.

It's a give an take, but as far as the shoulder bells being optional, I still feel that should stand since we see him with and without them in the actual comic book in a clear as day manner. So looking at the 5th figure down, which is actually the clearest visual reference (him grabbing the other mando), those aren't muscle lines at all. Yea, you can see the shape of the thigh's muscles but they are not a part of the vertical lines on the suit.

So based on my experience with the 501st, they're more than likely going to take the comic reference over the action figure hands.

    Re: Montross

Yes it is going to be a tough one, I will be using the pic of him grabbing the other Mando as my ref pic , like you say it is the clearest one of him. I agree with you on the figure, they always tend to be another repainted figure and a miss mash of all res for the person be it several different comics and video games . I have a friend who had the issues I am having with Montross on his Jodo Kast build. I plan to go the 501st route with this too, so the two of us should be able to put forward a good case, I have seen what you kindly sent over and would say i agree with 99% of it, everyone has an opinion . I'll keep you abreast of any yes or knows they throw at me, if you could do the same as well that would be swell .

I know you were doing some commissioning work, when do you pan to start back on your build? Do you have a date your aiming for ?

Again thanks for the information and clarification

    Tubachris85x,

I have been reviewing your list more and wanted to know if you have a picture of your boots, if possible i'd like to match them
Also with ref to the shoulder bells would you say TB over TK as they are larger and I think would look better ?
Do you plan on doing side arms ? if so what are you planning, again I would like to match this
How are you attaching your cape, we both know this changes in the comic so i would like to do the same as you again if possible

If you dont mind, I notice you have some stuff already, where did you get the items, would you mind sharing, again it would be nice to get some of the things you have already painstakingly researched

Thanks again bro, your time is very much appreciated

    Re: Montross

No worries, I hope I don't come off abrasive in my responses though, just a forewarning. I have tried to apply every angle for 501st approval, which was subsequently matched by the Mando Mercs, which is why I may come off a little hard-headed about some of the details, so if you disagree on something that I feel is one way, don't take it personally if I maintain my original idea on it. At the same time, since you're the only other person wanting to build this character, I will help you and not lead you to do something wrong or without reason. I had to make a decision based on my analysis.

Honestly the hardest part deciding on was the helmet's ear caps given how much they change between frames, so I used both the really close-up frame of his RF side caps and then the final image (I have a really high rez scan) of the one where he's grabbing the other mando, as I felt these two were the "most" consistent in the comic. It was a pain in the butt though. At the same time, since the 501st regs states that a art-based character must retain it's "movie-equivalent" costume piece. With that in the back of my mind, I made my ear caps removable in the event that once it comes down to submission time, they may turn around and tell me "oh the ears have to be movie style." Yea, I'll be pissed, but at least I can just do those up and take care of that in a few days of work. It's just doing a new costume for Legion approval, it's constantly going to be a "what-if" during analysis.

So with that in mind, if I am the first to get it done between you and me, regardless though, I want to make this the highest possible quality I can, which is why you see me using the BKBT CC helmet, I even cold-cast the custom comic-ear caps. The armor I am creating I will be molding and cold casting as well. Leathers were not cheap (but reasonable) and Delta was more than patient with me as this was his first time ever doing something custom. The jetpack I'm getting in, as you probably saw from NME is unique for that it's the first cold cast jetpack ever (as far as I know). I was just very lucky that they agreed to doing so and frankly I did not feel up to having to rub and buff an entire jetpack!

Overall, I am doing this for both the 501st and the Mercs, but I feel that if I am going to do this with the intentions of being the first, that not only for myself, but for others down the road who will pursue this later on can at least see my suit as decent translation of the character in the real world. It will never be perfect, as nothing ever is, but I want to make it near perfect to set as an example and a standard. Make it close to what you would actually see if the character was ever brought to life in the movies.

As far as myself getting back into the build, I will as soon as I can get my other responsibilities taken care of, which right now is very slim unfortunately. I have had to make a serious change in my health so I have been very very focused on that as of late. I am exercising and dieting very hard, which is enabling me to lose significant body fat (I've already lost 15lbs since last monday) and it will keep up for awhile. Unfortunately because of my weight loss and future weight loss, the soft parts that I did order now will either have to be tailored or possibly replaced, but I will adjust as it comes through down the road. I Know one vest is completed and should be on it's way soon, the 2nd vest however is still being finished up. The flight suit, last I heard, they were working on the knee's for me, as they said they could internally padd them up in accordance to the visual reference.

The pieces are here for the most part. Realistically I just need to finish the chest armor sculpts and mold/cast them, then it's a matter of getting the soft parts and putting it all together. I'm "close" but not "close" if that makes any sense. I spent little over $1600 so far in a short time frame. I don't think most people working on a Jango/Boba would have made the purchases I have in a span of 3 months, but, given my deadline is past and I don't really have another date to "debut" the character, I am not in any real rush. That's not to say I'm going to slack on it. I just need to take care of my commissions before I can justify working on any personal projects.

Not at all buddy, I too am going the 501st and UKG route, I never take anything personally, I also know I can come across pig headed. I know as your posts have proven, you are only trying to help and you have a wealth of research behind you. Sometimes with things (this is directed at me) some of my statements are more wishful thinking than reality ....

I hope your health levels out buddy, that is also a sterling effort on the weight loss front \m/

I am trying to aim for around October, but we all know timelines can be finicky...I have a buddy building a Jaster Mareel, we would like to troop in the pair together. Ye I am also on the Mercs board and hoping that the costume meets their and the 501st approvals

Pics to follow as and when things start to arrive ( after I order them of course )
