    Jul 31, 2007, 2:48 PM - The Mercke Lutso progress thread #1

Okay, I have been going over this idea for the past four years or so - I've been refining it into a concept that I really felt comfortable with, and now I'm at the point where I can start some serious work.

First off is the helmet. I've decided to completely finish the helmet before I began work on anything else.
It's a Mystery size helmet that I picked up about 2 years ago. Went through alot of modifications, then I painted it all up using automotive paints.
The colors (and every other aspect of the bucket, for that matter) are custom - made up by me. I chose a dark gunmetal grey for the base, and used a rusty brownish color for the trim. The earcaps are painted orange to compliment the rust color.

In reality the helmet is only 99% done, not finished. I'm currently working on revamping the interior, and building a rangefiner & stalk. I'll also be adding an aluminum bar to the lower lip of the t-visor. It'll make the helmet more stable, help to cover up that rough cut, and also add to the custom look.

Mercke Lutso is a Mandalorian Supercommando character that I made up a long time ago. I'm writing a novel about him atm...he was also my avatar during the short time that I played SWG (CU). I plan on making a full ensemble to reflect the character. I have drawings - I'll post them later.

    ANYWAY-
    The bucket. Here she is:

    Here are some detail shots:

I filled in the two arrows above the brow, for some more diversity among other customs. Also filled in the dent.

Put three chrome tacks on the lip of the rear-left, just for the heck of it.

A closeup on some of the layered weathering. Edited for better visibility.

    Tweaked the left earpiece.

Awesome bucket guy! You learn the most when you do your bucket IMHO. I suggest that anyone doing a first time custom to start there.

Is the weathering topical? Not a criticism, just a question =D My bucket has topical weathering, although it's damn near impossible to tell because of the way I blended the layers.

The weathering is all layered, save for the earpieces. I just painted the weathering on those.

But everything else you see was either acheived via masking layering, or chipping the finish with a knife.

Maybe you could add some rust stains on the buttons on the back?

I've been working on a good blaster now for a while. I went for a custom DL-44, using a denix mauser.

These pics are fairly old, I've tweaked it a bit since.

The holster's going to be tricky Any ideas for that?

make it out of leather, i almost say make a box shape and have the barrel of the blaster stiken out. that way if you cosplay and a cop sees you he knows its not a real gun (AX this year had that problem). The other question is hip or shoulder holster?

answer the question though. Make the holster out of leather, a box like shape to fit the gun with the barrel out the bottom.

My suggestion is to make a low cut vertical top that tapers down from the butt of the gun down to the front of the trigger. Then cut a U big enough for the inside portion of the scope to fit in. This will leave the majority of the scope sticking out flush to the holster and keeping the gun in the holster while giving you a good grip.

I am working on a pair of DL-47's which are a bit more stubby and circular at the front. I'll be making some holsters for them next week if you want me to record what I do so you may get some ideas. I made a pair of leather holsters for my P-53 Hydras that came out pretty nice. I love leather =D

Okay, thanks...I think I've got a basic idea down now.

Novall, oh yes, please document how that goes... Iwould love to see how you do that.

I'm not exactly fluent in leatherworking so I might need some reference

I've also made some concept drawings for how the whole ensemble will look.

    Here's my drawing...

    Photshopped for more detail...

I think I've got everything covered in my mind got a pretty good idea of what I'll use for most of these things.

And yes, that's a cybernetic arm...and no, it will not be a part of the costume...

This is the Lutso clan insignia:

I came up with this on a piece of scratch paper one day. This is the photshop rendition.

The symbol will go on the right breastplate (see drawing).

Awesome symbol. Yeah, I'll hook you up with a tutorial on leather holsters =D

First thing you need to do though is get a leather awl. That and a good pair of sharp scissors (I use tin snips also).

You should be able to buy one at your local craft store. It's the needle and housing you sew leather with.
