    McQuarrie Concept Fett WIP

Okay, so I've been working a lot lately on different helmets. Maybe it's more than a hobby at this point. I'm obsessed! It's a fett-ish!

Anyway...In addition to my Death Watch helmet, I'm also working on a McQuarrie concept Fett helmet, primarily for my son, but one never knows. I have a plan to eventually cast my Coruscant Guard helmet, so I may end up casting the DW and this one.

Here's a series of WIP pics up to it's current status.

I started off by making a basic Fett using the WOF patterns, then went on from there.

I have done some more work on the face, but took a break for Halloween. So far, I think I've spent about 10 hours on this and haven't even touched the back yet. I'll post more when I have more progress.

That looks really awesome. They're bringing that look back with the new Knights of the Old Republic comic series.

Some of the Neo-Crusader Shock Trooper armor looks nearly identical to the McQuarrie stuff.

Thanks, folks! I'm trying to get back to it. I got laid off last Friday so I' was hoping to finish all my projects to possibly cast and sell copies. But, I've been even busier over the past few days I've had no time to even touch these things.

I'll probably have some time on Saturday to do some work and post some progress.

    Wow. that got built fast!.

    glob that bondo on!

    great progress so far.

Just a heads up, and maybe you were planning this...but you're going to have to mold it if you keep going with what you have as I don't think you could get a visor in and have it wearable if you have the base helmet as your "skeleton"

again. I don't know what your plan is...just thought I'd mention that.

gotta say that is VERY NICE, when you finish, maybe you can trace your cut outs onto standard paper and scan 'em up so we can print 'em out... that'd kick bootie. I gotta finish my first bucket then my 8yr old son, then I wanna try this.

That is an awesome start on that bucket. The shape kinda reminds me of the Death Watch bucket.

    Re: McQuarrie Concept Fett WIP

Funny thing is, I'm actually doing a DW helm at the same time as this one. You can read about it here.

I have some distressing news about this build. I had an epic fail the other day.

I've never got fewer than three or four projects going on at one time. As I was putting one project, a new scratch built rifle, on my work bench, the McQ helmet fell on the floor and cracked quite a bit of the bondo dome off. But, thankfully the face is okay, and after a little hot glue and filler, I'm getting the dome back to normal.

I'll post an update with more face work soon.

    Re: McQuarrie Concept Fett WIP

Okay, I finally got around to doing some work on this. I'm running low on Bondo and decided to use another method to see if it would work faster...mainly since this is a not-to-be-worn model for casting. So, I used gypsum plaster, like I did for the original dome, for the facial details. I'm considering filling the helm with expandable foam to give it more substance for when I do the back and a neck ring.

Yes, I used silver paint as a primer. No, I'm not done with the detail work. I still have to do some minor puttying and fine detail around where the nose meets the eyes - and trim out the eyes, too. I'm also going to wait on the mouth insert until the rest of the bucket is done.

I'm wishing on a star for a new rotary tool for Christmas so I can do that work to it.

Yeah, I saw that in one of your Arc heavy gunner build videos (from ctnet) and my first thought was, "dang it, I'm not the first." But, it's all good. I appreciate the offer and I might just take you up on it.

    Re: McQuarrie Concept Fett WIP

I have been doing a lot of work lately. Now that I have a good corded Dremel (Black and Decker model) I've been able to make some progress. I'm concentrating on the right side for now (mainly because I'm running low on Bondo ) but I think it's getting better.

As you can see, I've built up the cheeks and reworked the eyes. I'll post another pic later when I have this area sanded down.

    Re: McQuarrie Concept Fett WIP

    Thanks, guys!

    PICTURE UPDATES!!!

I've almost got the right side of the face complete. I still need to work more on the nose, but the cheeks are 95% done.

And to show what I started with and what I still have to do to the left side...

In this pic, I've closed in the key hole area. The MQ has a different back where I didn't have to cut it out like a regular Fett. But, I didn't know I was making a MQ Fett until after I cut this out. Thankfully, it's very easy to fix at this stage.

I also noticed that the rim of the helmet is not angled like a Fett, so I lowered the center 1" and made the back level. You can also see the temporary markings where I'm going to cut out for the MQ Fett back.

You can also see that I removed the dome plaster to redo it. I made an error with using the plaster. It's a good idea for detail, but it doesn't hold up very well.

I'm trying , guys. I also looked into the casting materials for my helmets. It's going to cost me over $300 for the materials for one helmet, and I want to do more than 4! What have I gotten myself into?!

It's all good though. I hopefully will have my old job back soon so I can afford this stuff.

This is the back of the figure's helmet...

And this is the back of the SGB MQ Fett...

I'm going for something like that. More detail will be added after I get a couple layers of Bondo.

Oh, and I got that gif by typing in BONDO on PhotoBucket. Kinda cool, isn't it?

Yeah i combed as many MQ ref. pics I could and there was never really one of the back of this particular helmet. So I used the hasbro figure as reference for the back.in the pic you posted the details are washed out because of the all white paint but it does have all the same carved in lines as the figure helmet does.
Yours is looking good see what I mean about all the wierd angles in the face it took me forever to get them right and even still they arent perfect.

Exactly. It's tough to do a helmet from a figure, but you did a good job. I hope mine is as good as yours. I screen-grabbed that pic from your youtube video. I hope you don't mind.

A thread back from the dead! Wow, I had actually forgotten that I had started this thing. Just to let you know, it's still alive and a project I intend to finish.

I was finally able to pick up the proper tools to get some more work done on this thing.

You can see there's still a lot of detail work to do on the face. I noticed that the mandables aren't exactly even and the brow line needs work. What I'm planning on doing is putting a backing behind the eyes and filling that with Bondo so I can literally carve out the eyes again. That's why the bridge of the nose isn't looking so good. But it's progress. I also did do a layer of Bondo on the back side, but need to do another layer. It came out okay, but there are still some areas that are just too deep for filler putty.

I wanted to give some respect to SGB for letting me use a picture of his completed bucket to get mine somewhat similar. Mine is going to be a little different, but close.
