    Marrow Sun's Custom Progress

**UPDATED August 29th**Hey everyone! Long time no post. Well last week I had a bit of time on my hands before we went on our mini vacation. I've got a fair bit of work done on my helmet and a small portion accomplished on my armor. I'm pleased with how everything is coming together. I did like my last custom helmet, but in the end it was too bulky for what I had envisioned. This time around the Mandalorian Super Commando bucket will be more streamlined with romanesque feel to it.

    here are some progress pics

Nice work MS. Are planning on reproducing the helmet, or is this a one off like the last one? Either way, great work. Are you going to fill in the holes in the back with something? I seems a nit... open. =)

I do have a plan for the back. It will be different than it is now. Definetly not left open like you see it now.

Ah, someone finally noticed that! I thought it would be interesting to do the left hand mount RF and earcaps. It was a bit of work to change those around but it worked out well.

That is COOOOOL!! I love it.
It sort of looks like a very logical in-between stage from a Clone Troooper to a "classic" Mando helmet.
Your original Supercommando helmet was amazing! This one will rival it for coolness!

Man, that's niiiice......one question, tho...how are you gonna get the visor to fit? Will it be vaccu-formed or something? I was looking at that wicked overhanging vee-brow...

The ridge area is build up ontop of the existing brow line so I can set the visor in like any other. it will most likely appear more recessed than the standard Fett helmet. There will also be more build up on the area above the cheeks and down the mandibles so it will be more balanced. In my mind I imagine a furrowed brow type expression built into the helmet. whether or not I end up pulling off that look is yet to be seen.

I managed to squeeze in a few hours today on the helmet. No new pictures of the back since I've only did some needed clean up,nothing in the design has changed yet. The front on the otherhand in nearly completed. Just some minor filling, sanding and tweeking to do.

    Here are the pics!

Very cool. I really like the angry "eyebrows" above the t-visor area. Gives it quite a menacing look. Can't wait to see it done. What is the color scheme going to be? Deicided yet?

Most likely a very dark grey or gunmetal. Goro is sending me a red visor from Japan for the bucket so I may have some other red highlights here and there.

Great technical work as well as a great conceptual idea, like the rest I can not wait to see it finished. Many of us can draw some cool looking helmets but getting them to the physical world is the challenage, you have done a great job and are truley talented.

a techincal question. what is your process for making changes to the underlying helmet. Are you adding bondo then carving/sculpting it?

For most of the face area and the top raised detail I did use bondo jelly and regular bondo. I use 1/8th painters tape to mask my rough shape, build up the shape with the bondo and when it dries I sand it out and then use a razor knife to carve in the detail. Alot of the shapes are started with thin styrene or MDF and then bondo is applied on and around.
    LOTS of sanding is involved.
    Hope that helps.

    Thank you for the insight,

while it is off topic, I am making some fiberglass saddlebags for my sport bike and wanted to get the layering effect, I will try your approach.

**August 19th** Just a quick update. I've only had a couple spare hours all week to tinker with the helmet. More setbacks than work accomplished. Hopefully by the end of the week I'll have the back of the helmet done. I'll be leaving out any detailed greeblies to make the casting procedure easier.

    Holy Asterisks! That looks incredible!

The back is stunning, I also love the little gills on the sides too. Little details like that make it look awesome. You're a crazy individual Marrow Sun!

Mostly bondo jelly, MDF and styrene. I try to avoid the plastics as much as possible as I don't have a lot of luck with the bondos adhering to them properly. MDF is your friend

That is outstanding work --- they the military should by these for all soldiers in the M/E -- it would definitely scare the SH*T out of the insurgents! I believe you should get some type of award for the best mod out there -- that helmet is unique....

The more I look at this helmet, the more I absolutely love it!! You have rekindled inspiration for a custom Mandalorian. My first one was 5 years ago. So much has changed regarding the custom Mandos since then.

    It'll be fun!

    I really don't think i can add much else that hasn't already been said above mate, but i will add this;

The first time i sgined up to these boards, years ago under a different name, that shocktrooper helmet you built was the best thing i had ever seen, and prompted me to try to make my own helmet one day. Well, three years later, i've had a clone commander Bly, Anakin Skywalker, And a 3rd age Gondorian Infantry soldier my Dream of a Mandalorian is finally here. With the help with a couple of people it is finally coming to be a reality, and i felt an immense amount of pride when someone likened my helmet to a Marrow Sun as far as uniqueness goes.

You sir are a credit to the entire costuming world, and your work inspires us all to do better and greater things with our own projects.:thumbup

Definitely count me as interested in one once you get around to casting it. About how much do you think I should save? I'm looking forward to adding it to the list of helmet's I'll eventually have for my custom Mando to switch between (along with switching some of the accessories and armor parts).

And as far as the detailed greeblies go, I think that: a) neither of the original Fett helmets had them, and b) let people add their own. I've already got a drawerful of stuff that I might be able to use for that purpose...

Hey there one more question on how you create these great helmets.

I noticed some vent holes on the right cheek plate area. Do you dremal these out? carve?

It is the small details like this which make your helmets fantastic.

The slots on the cheeks are done with a dremel bit on my drill press. I set up a straight edge and machined in the slots into plastic. Then I cut out the area on both sides of the helmet and replaced them with the pieces I made up. Bondo,sand,prime,...Repeat

All I can say hell yeah id like a shab'la copy!! just let us know when youre ready to crank them out! Im putting some pennies aside for the day you're ready! That is straight up raw creativity and love of the art. you have to appreciate the craftsmanship going into this one. You've topped yourself already and it isnt even finished. Its screaming Mando'ade of the old republic to me. Its beautiful, theres no other word for it.

Kandosii job! I have to agree with MandoSniper - looks like one of the old. It even reminds me partly of that worn by Rohlan Dyre

August 29th Well I think I'm about done the bucket now. All there is left to do now is a day of sanding, primer and the odd detail adjustment. I should have the helmet molded by the end of the weekend. Then more armor pieces to create.
Here is the back. It still needs some more sanding and a bit of bondo here and there.

That is simply beautiful. It's been said before but you truly are an inspiration.

I also think the dark colors, with the lens from goro which I think will be more of a blood redish (is he the one who re-did a MR Clone helm?) will look amazing.

If you have an idea of pricing please pm me
