    Lizean Akai - Custom Fem'mando (100% Complete)

Su'cuy everyone! Hi, I'm rather new, well, I've been a lurker for a couple of years now so it's about time I say hello. Now at least that I feel I'm serious about starting this project.

These are the concept drawings so far for my custom Mando, Lizean Akai. She has an entire detailed back story if anyone's interested. But for now I'd like to discuss my plans for the armor/costume. Which will be of the more heavily armored variety, her tools of the trade almost always surround a big bang and shower of dirt. (Aka, she dosen't really enjoy handling smaller firearms, but she will if the task ahead requires it.)

(Just a quick print out color test, this shows good detail on her helmet, I've decided since then to ditch the jet pack.)

(This was done particularly fast so don't pay attention to the sloppy anatomy. And the critter would be her lovely pet Nexu, Cyare, adorable hmm? Haha.)

First of all, I guess I want opinions on my plans before I jump into it and or go off evaporating too much of the already minimal cash flow.

First of all the helmet. Keep in mind I'm:
5" 3', medium build. So from what I've read around, the rubies Jango would be the way to go because it is the smallest. Though, being a particularly picky perfectionist, the little quirks in the helmet are really getting to me. Should I just pick one up and give it a go anyways?
I've been tempted to just break out my WED clay and attempt to scratch build the helmet myself at this point.

About the chest: I really want the form fitting style, similar to the glimsp of the female mando'ade in the Star Wars Insider #86 Artical.
Now to do this... I've had the idea floating around that it would require the casting of my chest area and then a vacuum form over that (I would then cut out the desired shape).

As for the her pack, I discovered that I really liked the style that Scorch(The farthest to the right), from the Republic Commando video game, wore. And also that it would be something a little less played out and a little more original then the jet pack.

As for my little play on the Mandalorian insignia, it's not pernament, but I had the idea that at times different Mandalorian clans would slightly modify the skull to better define the group. Just a concept, not meant to be a butchery.
Now I'm off to go busy myself with commissions so I can truely get started on this as soon as I can.

    Comments, suggestions, idea anyone?

Yeah, I love that colour scheme! The whole concept is fantastic. I'm currently working on a custom pack that also leans toward the Republic Commando style.
You have a good idea with Vac'ing your own form. You will not get a better fit than that.
    Nice work so far!

Yeah, I really love your cape design. I also love the fact that you have a good three or four sets of bandolier pouches, it looks like this will be a very cool looking costume. The whole tri-color element is very spiffy as well.

I would be greatly interested in your back story as i've been writting mine for several years now.

Your gauntlets look sick as well, just a question how much funding do you have for this b/c this looks as if it could get pretty pricey?

Thanks so much for the flattery guys! I'm really glad people like the sceme, it took me a while to find the right one, for sure.

Sure thing, here's the start to the story I wrote last year, finally posted it and things are already outdated! (So not everything is spot on, but you'll get the idea I'm sure.) The Verge of Treachery

Basicly it's about Lizean's small clan that broke away from the larger traditional Mandalorian clan during the Mando'ade civil war, when Bryen didn't feel he could no longer trust the youngly appointed Mandalore (Jango, haha). I'll be continuing the story but I don't want to spoil it just in case. The basic strong point is that she has her own personal little war with the Mandalore and her future connections with the Deathwatch, pretty dramaic stuff.
(Alright I'll stop my rammbling before I get too carried away!)

Well my bank account at the moment is weeping, but, I have the vacuum form table, the clay, the plaster, the sintra and full access to a "candyshop" of tools. I also have connections through an army surplus store and Hobby Lobby(that takes care of the fabrics). So really the only things I need to restock at the moment is the primer and paint!
(It helps when you have a friend to help you through the process of aquiring all this.)

I already invented a "youth, rare albino pet Nexu" for MY bounty hunter I used to play in an online RPG over at the now gone BeJedi.com forums.....

But you can use it ...

Anyway, I just like you concepts and I hope you don´t mind, that I already saved it and added to my collection of Mando designs. Its way creative. Can´t wait to see the physical armor.

Great design! Is it fair to assume you have a fashion background? There's a great style to your drawings, and including a color study is a nice touch. The cape style is cool (sort of an evil little red (grey) riding hood, lol), the way the belt rides the hips in a decidedly feminine way, and the outstanding use of shades of grey with accent green. I dig it. 8)

This is an odd question, but I've been wondering for a while, how do you shape the... "chest alowances" on fem-mando armor? I've sat here and thought about it, and I think the only way to do it is via vacu-form

Um... ok, I've never heard of "bejedi.com," so I hope there's some sort of sarcasm played in here... I really try and strive for originality in my designs, you know? Nexu were actually quite popular as pets and came in many color varieties, seen in a few comics here and there (including a smaller nexu in the arms of San Hill in the "Visionaries" Graphic Novel). I don't think really anyone has the right to "claim" to the idea of it. But hey, great minds think alike hmm?

Actually no, haha. I've had no art schooling and take pride in the fact that I'm self taught, though I'd really love to persue a fashion/design major, that is if it'd be designing armor and the like and not some silly dress on a runway. :P
I adore designing mando'ade, so for a small fee I'd love to be able to design more armor scemes for people who'd perhaps be interested. I'd love to do it for free, but art is my source of income and that of which I need to work on this project.

Yeah, certainly. I'd go for taking a live cast of the actual person with plaster bandages, then re-enforce that mold and then go for a vac form.

Another idea might be to look up some torso modeling Mannequins(the ones you see modeling lady's undergarments), build them over a little with some sort of heat resistant modeling material (perhaps air drying paper clay sanded down?) to make them look a little more rounded, thick, and give alowance for the material warn under the armor. I searched all over ebay myself and the prices average at around $40 I believe. Sadly for myself I couldn't seem to find any that would suit me.

Anything to avoid the awkward "bubbles" that I believe would come forth from a freestyle attempt with flat sintra.
    Hope this helped.

Wow, that really looks great. You should contact Badkitty on this site. She's designing an original female Mando too.

The design, colors, concept and artwork all look great. I would only suggest a couple things which you might think about. Use ammo pouches that resemble the Fett's and possibly collar armor as a nod to your Mando predecessors (along with the iconic Mando helmet you've already got). Also, I like the cape idea, but I'm not sure if having the shoulder bells on the cape will work well if the cape moves freely. If the shoulders are under the cape on a vest, then problem solved, or if you use collar armor the cape could be attached to it w/o the shoulders on the cape.

Well, there's my .02 cents (alright, about .35 cents). Great job and take progress pics.

Oh, about the cape! It was completely intentional, I should post a reference of her backside and I think the idea I have down would be more appearent. The actual cape is kind of like a shawlXscarf hybrid. So there's the shoulder/collarbone portion that fits like a shawl, with strands like a scarf that overlap over the shoulders via the clips up there and dangle. When I get more time this weekend, I'll clean up a reference for this.

Well I was thinking towards a heavy canvas or pleather, I'm still deciding of course. An idea I floating around is to have the scarfing to be pleather on the outside with the inside lining as canvas. Any opinions on this?

Canvas colors I have at the moment:

    Hydra,

That's a mean looking Fem'Mando, looking at your drawing style , reminds me of sombody here in Holland.
I might be mistaken, but I can't seem to help seeing a bit of Lara Croft in the concept. I mean that as a compliment.

I like the idea of a Mandolorian Pet aswell, I guess I have seen Pictures somewhere of Boba fett walking around with a Corellian Slice hound, anyway im really into the Pet thing.

The Armor looks very tricky to make, wish you much of luck with that, the boots are very mean looking also, with the row of spikes ontop of the boots.

I should keep the color scheme, very Original in my opinion.

Anyhow very much of luck, with your project

For the chest mold. If you have someone you don't mind seeing you naked, look up "duct tape dummy". It's a real cheap way to make a mold of your body similiar to the plaster cast.

Hydra, this concept is looking awesome. I agree with you, you shuld use the Rubies Jango. It will need some modification to look nicer, but since you're not doing either a Jango or a Boba, accuracy is only what looks good in your mind. While you're modifying, I'd also extend the ridge over the top of the helmet with a couple thin sintra sheets layered, and modelling putty. I think that'd look good with your colour scheme, the way the white stripe goes over the top. Perhaps some extra gadgets would look cool too, to make it look less like a modified rubies jango bucket.

I also really like your fusion of leather straps with the armour pieces, and the extended cape. Perhaps like some others have said, the shoulder/collar part would look good if it was rigid, perhaps covering a rigid shoulder/collar piece with the cape cloth.

This is such an awesome design, I can't wait to see some progress pics, let alone the finished item.

    Good luck,

    Adam

Yeah, I remember using trash-bags/ duct and masking tape to make a manequin of myself to wear some armor for a school project one time. Yeah, its a ***** to get out of. anyway, thanks for the help, i've been trying to figure out a low-cost way of making femmando chest armor since my girlfriend said she'd be interseted in playing a mando.

Anyway, thanks for the help, i'm off to go mod some gauntlets.

Simply beautiful imaginative work!! I love the concept and the design details! I will be watching this thread to see how it all comes together.

I recently was reading about using plastic wrap instead of duct tape to create a body block. It looked a lot better than the old duct tape method. Just remember to have the AC running.

Vac forming or fiberglassing are definitely the best methods for this type of armor.

    **** Cool! Thanks for sharing.

    Also I agree with seeker, I think we need the original sized picture. I can't see how that taping stuff works your pic is too small @_@;

Jeez guys, I'm much too shy to show the full sized skin-tight picture. BUT. Here's the exact same guide I used to create mine and it worked incredibly well for under $25.

Ah, a rised ridge like those on a clone? I think it's an awesome idea, I'd really like to sketch out a few helmet variations, thanks for the support!

As for the Mandalorian film... if any of you guys ever start to do one, let me in on it. I have a few ideas for storylines (which include my character, obviously)

Simply I'm fond of color schemes where drab colors like gray/brown/black are accented with neon or brightly hued shades. Neon green happens to be one of my favorites, so I figured it just looked good. (Orange was my first choice but there's already a few mandos out there who use it.)

I was thinking,(sometimes I do ) and I think that if you don´t find someone that make the chest armor, this could help.....
cut the basic shape in a trash can armor(blue).............and cut the breast( ) part and leave it empty........cut in a half a foam ball, and insert it in the hole that you cut previusly................re-shape the foam with bondo or someting to make a better shape...MAKE IT A TICKET SKIND.........
........and here come the trick, melt the foam from the inside with acetone (just use a brush on the foam and it will vaporate)and you will have only the exterior part(the putty part)I hope you understand the idea, cause my english is very bad...............

you could also get one of these and cut the armor pattern out of it, its made outta plastic.

Thanks alot for the chest armor idea's but I think I have my ideas set, and thanks for the offer yanvag, but I have my own table

If you looked above, I already talked about the armor.

I have a sketch of her fighting off a wookie, I'll look into getting that colored this week.
I hope to be starting this real soon, I have a friend coming over to help me take the casting and another friend who has found a pretty nice flightsuit pattern for me.

Yay, finally some sort of progress and double-yay for a working camera.
I'm installing the triggers and other goodies on these guys tomorrow, which are infact the smallest items in Lizean's arsenal.

And here's a reference to the size next to my DT-57

Also excited to start working on my Z-6 tomorrow, should be fun!

For the Z-6: what could help in the construction is an old Super Soaker; the XXP 275, I think it was called. Anyway, it was held alot like the Trooper is holding the Z-6

Oh neat! Mine's going to be quite a bit bigger (8 inches across), and I'm in the process of wiring an old RC car motor for the spinning, thanks alot for posting the tutorial too. Always cool to see how other people go about "the making of."

Progress? Yes and no. Not really anything too interesting anyways, got the sidearms finished and most of the armor templates finished.
Here's a horrible picture, need a better camera (the black shirt doesn't help either.)

Oh and something I've got in the works at the moment... I'll be giving away 6-9 of my custom mando designs in the next couple of weeks (after reading that quite a few people are stuck on design ideas, thought I might be able to help a little). I'll keep you guys posted.

The finished guns look great indeed, are they going to be put in some western style holsters or are they going to be like hip guns (detective style), is there going to be a main gun like the EE-3 ?

Well anyways, I ordered my rubies jango a few weeks ago but it doesn't see like I'll get to work on it before I head off to Colorado for 2-3 weeks this Saturday. Once I get back though I'll have some mando designs to give away and such. See ya guys.

this concept is quite....shall i say, ******. your concept art looks like it was drawn up by someone working for GL himself. you should be very proud. i have always wanted to see someone do a fem'mando the right way (most of the fem's out there just look like a skinny fett, like *jango at age 12; ...and here he is before his first date*...lol).

but where does your custom fit into the "arsenal"(if there is such a thing) of mando troops? she looks kind of like a scout/sniper/assassin type. i started on your back story you wrote, too. i must say you seem multi-talented. you should just go ahead and write yourself up a novel and run everything by GL for a part in the next SW flick.

If you're not doing a jet pack are you going to use like a scout trooper pack? I think it would kind of finish the back off where your cape goes down on each shoulder and leaves the center open. Just my opinion tho. It looks great, deffinetly one of the best cuztoms I've seen.

Really nice look and designs!! The color scheme is great! It's nice to see more serious "Expanded Universe" female Mandos.

I see you based your first sketch off Tom Hodges drawing, nice base to start from.

Don't know where you are with your chest armor but finding a female torso form (possibly adding to it depending on cup size) and heating sintra could work well. Great work! Keep it upand good luck!

I can't wait to see the completed project.
Hopefully, before C4 I will have started my custom Mando...
depending on $$$ and what idea I want to run with.

    Best of luck with yours!

Well I had the idea she'd be a heavy weapons type. Don't know though, I figure that might change soon.

And wow guys, thanks for the enthusiasm, I just wish I had more to update on.

So far all I have going is the outline of the markings, stripes, whatever, stenciled out on my rubies jango. Still need to replace the visor and reinforce the inside though.

And well I guess I might as well get the word out, this might be a little more exciting:

I'll be releasing 6 of my personal mando designs/characters for others to use if they wish. Not sure how I'll divy them out, but I'll figure out something.

Wow I wish I had your talent at artwork, if I did my characters and concepts wouldn't look like they were made for an anime lol

The srt work is fantastic ner vod! My armor has similar colors not exactly the same but close enough. The hard parts are dark and light grey blues and gold, and tan and desert earth brown for the combat suit and soft parts. I love your design and is easily the best fan costom and art Ive seen to date. It screams Star Wars and could easily be an in universe character. You get serious props from be and Id love to see a realized version of this concept! Oya verd!
