    Re: Jax Returns!

Hey, I remember you. I met you up at that DSG get together at Randy's house about a week ago. I was there with Laan (Todd.) We were talking about a fan film where Darth Vader tickles people instead of Force-choking them.

Your custom looks cool! The white and yellow really work, and the weathering is nicely done. Is that a Pulse Rifle in the "busted" pic??
Hope to see more progress on your v.2 as you work on it.

    thanks....

however. what do you all think of the newer designs. im leaning towars the one with the diagnol striping hash marks the the otehr ones.

the M4 was only for Airsoft. its not part of my costume. that white rifle IS, but i need to fix it, so ive moved to a "secret weapon"

I posted about this yesterday, but I accidently pushed the back button, and then I went to bed.

It looks good, I like the different colored jumpsuit thing you did, and I have seen many pics of your mando from Comic-Con, it's awesome.

Good luck on Version 2 dude!

I think the version one green looks the best out of everything you've shown so far. Good luck with th new versions though.

DO NOT PLAY WITH ABS ARMOR.. SPAT has soem nice pix on what will happen if you do. btu ive seen it close hand as well.

as for my helmet. .25's or .28's dont penetrate the helmet. The visor is anzi rated to begin with. i also tested it point black with .25's and not even a scratch.

So to do that weathering did you actually paint several layers and sand down to reveal the colors?

I'm very cruious how you did it.

There are two ways to weather:
Topical (One layer of paint on top of the other)

And Masking. With masking, you (as an example) you paint your primer, silver, then mask off the areas you want to show the silver, then paint.

Later on after the paint is dry, you scratch off the mask, and it appears that your armor has been chipped, and scraped in battle.

    Re: Jax Returns!

This armour was done with a mix of both.

There are parts where it was layered and chipped, or masked, and then after the painting was done, theres parts where he sanded over it to make it look worn, instead of flaked.

The gouge in the yellow is a good example.

It looks like he made a gouge, masked, painted, masked paitned, then when all doen, sanded the spot, so the raised most edge looks to be scraped while the inner looks gouged.

I dont see much 'topical' on this armour.

metal armor weathers the same as plastic or fiberglass, 'cept that you don't need to be nearly as gentle with it, and don't need the silver base coat

Yea I understand that but I was just saying its made with metal plates. Usually people approach armor with plastics.

that is probably the best "boobs" armor i've seen that contours to the shape without being overtly boobs. in those group shots with her helmet on she could be mistaken for a man.

to me that a good thing, in my mind i don't think a woman of a warrior race would want to go into battle wearing armor that screams, "LOOK AT MY BOOOOOOOOOOOOBS!!!!"

so finnaly built some stuff for lisa again tonight. took about 45 minutes or less for the shaping and about 3 hours for the multiple layers of painting with breaks to watch episodes of House.

    pics. enjoy!

started out with this 12.97 4'x4' peice of aluminum. and it goes from there.

i know i have to beat up the red stripe area a bit more, that will be tonight.

You must be one seriously tough mando. Your armor looks like you been beat to death a half dozen times. I love the weathering as always. Thats also some really nice aluminum work.

yeah. its not very "smooth" but i used the same methods that i made my upper armor with. so her lower armor doesnt math the build. if that makes sence. wanted it to look like a possible hasty add on, due to change in tactics, or whatever. you cant really tell anyway.

for now i think we're gonna just velcro the plates to her pants, but will add balistic padding before comic con.

as for my stuff. im prolly gonna replace my colar peice, as i dont really like it anyway. gotta get the angle right. plus add the cod peice tonight.

    thank you.

i've actually been com[paring my armor to the actual templates. they are a bi on the small side. strange. however i've always thought my ab plate was too far away from my non existant cod plate (now that i have one)

i'm gonna try and update the heavty armor lower leg guards this week, and update the cod plate a bit more, and lower it a tad.

after all these years the velcro is stating to wear off my vest. it might just be time to make a compleately new one with new velcro, etc. may snaps. just never been much of a fan of the installation process. i'm pretty hard on my gear, and i dont want anything to fall off.

how do my boots look? my new collar plate? any opinions?

I like the new collar Jax, your old one looked a bit.. off.. with the dip between the chest plates. Your boots look better too..tho i'm not sure about how your shin armor..looks a little bit thick to me, it could just be the angle of the pics too.

But overall.. i'm still liking your amor

well actually ive never changed my boots. harley davidson boots with a mean sole and no laces

the shins are colonial marine shins from aliens. Shados shoulder bells and my old ones used to be the knee plates off of the same kit.

not sure what you mean abtou a dip between the chest plates. it was just straight across. the new one angles up properly.

the shins are compleatly surroundign my calves.

not sure WHO these will be for. me or Lisa.

but here are my scratch built aluminum gauntlets. or at least the left one today.

    and one knee

what do you think? I know the join points are a bit "rough" and i need ot get hinges, but it'll work for now.

now the only thing is. what to use for flamethrower tops and that missle thing.

    automotive primer

I really like your custom Mandalorian. You've put a tremendous amount of creativity and effort into it, and it shows!

I do alot of Colonial Marine trooping, and spotted the shin armor and PR right away. Nice! A cool "crossover"! 8)

Your attention to detail, weathering, etc. are second to none. Very well done. Lisa's armor is awesome as well.

    Frakkin' cool! 8)

well. weathering the way people like me do it, is "real" as opposed to "painted on" if that makes sence. to me it looks fake. no offence to the fantastic Boba helmets ive seen out there. (Bartlett, and others.). Just to me, id rather it be rael.

So beskar is allegedly made out of basicllly a bronzeish color right? and than the clans or whomever paints them to suit their beleifs or what have you. so thats whats up here.

    metal armor-->painted colors-->ages over time-->cool looking kit.

thanks for the comments Bounty's Hunted. as much as i hate to give up my trooper forearms, i think these might add that last bit of flavor my kits been seekign over the last 6 years.

Hello, Jax I must say you have done an awsome job with your mando and this pic is IMO the coolest, you just have that ****** look going on like your walking away from something and Iam just waiting for the explosion in the background to happen.

Very inspirational with your style, thank you for sharing your progress with us.

    Keep up the good work.

I really dig the "authentic" feel. It's not very often to run across a mando custom that could probably fit right in, quality wise, on one of the movie sets. Great job. I guess my only critique would be the pouches, I guess they kinda don't fit in, in my opinion (they kinda scream army surplus, ;p).

    um no.

actually I blue taped the visor. but the one rubies i have which has been repainted in the "Shado" thread wasnt it it when i painted it. i only installed it after the fact. and the onyl way id ever replace this helmet is if i get a better version atr the same size. and i dont have issues now that i have a craft ring in it. never melted.

for plastic, id say paint is the way to go, like a sandtrooper. dust it with some colors and wipe away the stuff you dont want or looks funny/bad/wrong.

as for metal skills. im not that good. there are otehrs better. i just work fast, and thanks for the compliments.

yup. i know i missed last year i was on tour...

    :|

anyway. yeah ill be there as will the other white female custom i built.

its an older picture and ther eis no leg armor on Shado, but it'll do.

and as far as i'm concerned there is one maybe two other customs that i think are of severa high quality. Toms and Ray's. So get your custom butts to SDCC and prove me wrong!
