Does anyone know how much space there is between your eyes and the visor of a Mandalorian helmet?
I want to design a working HUD for one of these helmets but I don't know if there's enough space for the electronics.

it varies from person to person. and on the helmet you're wearing. etc etc. kinda hard to give you an exact number.
Well let's say in your helmet, how much room would you say is between your eyes and your visor.
I'm thinking of coming up with something like this for the HUD screen

well..... wouldn't that need a computer? and also. GRRRRRR.... you beat me to actually making a thread about this. I was hoping to use a simple projector that projects one simple image and a semi opaque visor and well I think you get it.
my question is WHY?
what do you mean why? about the computer? well you have to have some sort of computing system inorder for there to be something displayed on a moniter.
As for the computer, I was thinking about a smart phone. It would probably involve some reprogramming and tampering but I bet it would work.
I'm working on a rough sketch right now and I will try to have it posted by tomorrow.
No I mean Why would you want to or need a HUD no one else could see...I mean a working range finder is one thing a HUD is another.
As another person said on origin of the dent, so boba can watch married with kids reruns while pretending to stand gaurd for jaba. lol
Because if a real Mandalorian helmet existed it would have a HUD in it. And I think it would just plain be cool.
Kandosii ner vod! lol
Im just saying you dont even have a bucket yet I assume since your asking how much room it has...might want to start buying and putting together your stuff before you worry about adding little things that no one else will see is all. Its a good and cool idea but theres alot of more important things you should worry about at this stage.
Well, I don't plan on building anything for quite some time. Not until I'v graduated from college at least. So until then I'm just coming up with ideas and drawing up sketches.
Here is a rough sketch of the ultimate goal.

Could be expensive but, why not put in a OLCD when the finally come out?
Sound good but.
There is seriously like 1 to 2 inches. Only thing I can think of putting in there is one of those wearable TV sunglasses things. The guts I mean. I wouldn't want to put that on both eyes, unless you have a camera feeding images through to the screens. When you get a bucket, and try wearing it for a few hours you'll understand why everyone is asking "why?" lol. I honestly thought of doing the same thing way back when, before I had anything, but when you play with a Helmet up close, you'll understand the ... limitations, lol.
In my bucket? Exactly the distance to the tip of my nose. And before anyone says it, that's not much of a distance at all
I've actually had something like your working on installed in my bucket at one time. I modified a set of EZview glasses and added a night vision camera, then installed it directly behind the visor so my eyes fit against it. While it worked, the viewing area was just to small and didn't feel safe.
The problem is resolution, and finding the right type of screens to make it work. It's nothing you can take out of a cell phone, these things have to be special ordered which is going to cost you around $1k easily. The best way to create a HUD is the same way it's done on jets, have the imaged projected onto the visor from below. Unfortunately the cost to do that would mean you need to win the lottery.
Why would you need a forward cam? Anyway, You could take out the guts of a computer camera (kind you stick on top) then take a small screen from say a.... cell phone (just enough to be able to use input and show the image, and you're done.
I've thought about putting a tiny digital clock on the inside of my visor, about the size of a quarter... don't know where to look for such a thing though...
For the clock maybe you could put something in the Range Finder. Wouldn't be crowding the helmet interior. Not sure why you would want a clock though, but it sounds cool.
I was also thinking about putting a juice bar up in there...
I don't know- just like to know what time it is I guess.![]()
Well apart from the practically I think if you wanted to create a "Demo"bucket or such for people to look at,it might be cool to have the working HUD inside, though I agree that unless you have one of the larger helmets there isn't alot of room.Still this idea is cool and it's got me interested!Where there's a will there is a way!
sounds good, but I'm not sure if you'd even be able to see it. Vision gets very blurry at 1 inch or less...
yeah, I know because trying to make a halo EVA helmet, I wanted a substitute for polarizing that massive, compound curved visor. So I tried putting my cell phone camera viewing out a small hole. I got a general idea of where I was, I didn;t smash into walls, but it is incredibily blurry, and it honestly isn't worth the money. HUD's (like in games) work by having the whole image on your visor. Your eye is somewhat capable of focusing at that point. but viewing a screen even closer in is impossible unless your eyes are capable of focusing at any range.
Oh, but SOME helmets might be capable of it. A stormtrooper helmet MIGHT work, but the helmet has to have a bulge at the front, or fit rather large.
Maybe a Scout Trooper helmet would work? I've never put one on personally, but there seems to be a lot of EYE distance
well i got an idea how about put a small screen in the range finder or have it project from their and have its guts on your back. I was going to install a screen in my range finder and a cam on the back of my helmet which i think could work. i could later equip a motion sensor so that the finder drops into view
..... Watch guy....... my range finder is now going too have a watch in it, that or I find someway too check the time..... maybe have a watch on your cod-piece, Someone ask for the time BAM look at my crotch.
Personally, For the HUD, Or rather HMD (head mounted display) my opinion is coolio, and well, **** EXPENSIVE, Unless you go ghetto and just wear one of those screen glasses thingy connected too a computer, in your pouch displaying such information.
My only issue with in helmet gadgetry is the fog factor, you can put motorcycle anti fog on the inside of your helmet, but what would you put on your equipment to prevent the water in your breath from fogging it up?
You'd have to install about 15 fans just to get the airflow, or modifying the helmet.
Trying not to be a negative nelly about this, but if you're changing helmets to fit the equipment then perhaps you are looking at the whole idea of costuming the wrong way round?
saz is right, Like always
