    FullMetalSam First project

    First Post - woohoo !
Been hanging around those forums for quite a while before registering... reading and looking at pics trying to get an idea or be inspired

Looks like I found something to inspire me to get a custom mandalorian project on the way.

Been in costuming for a little while now... but has mostly been active in the video game/anime scene (those who know cosplay.com might recognize the nickname)... and I stumbled here looking for information on making armor - for some other project I had at the time (Odin from the PS2 Odin Sphere video game). But now, since it's done... now I'm looking at putting together my own version of a Mandalorian warrior.

Planning to scratchbuilt the whole thing (since it's a unique design) out of... craft foam It's not a medium the people here are using very often (haven't seen it used once). I've done some miracle work with craft foam and I think it could apply to the mandalorian armor as well. We'll see

Right now - I'm in the planning stages and doing sketches to figure out how the armor is going to look like and what will be color scheme.

All I have to show is the color scheme for now:

What do you guys think ???

As soon as I find a way to scan my design - might have to reproduce it by hand in photoshot or something... I'll post it here... and some progress pic on the bucket (since it's what I'm going to start working on first) are going to follow pretty soon afterward

Welcome to the boards Sam, this is a great place to learn all kinds of costuming techniques, we have a great brotherhood going on in these boards.

Great looking Mando, keep us posted on your progress. We like pics!

    A bit of progress...
Using Skup Design Sketches - here is what I have done up to now.
***EDIT: Removed Previous Concept Pics ***

Like I was saying in Skupil new project thread... I'm going for something a little bit different than the usual Mando. It's just a start, there are more piece of armor that will be added later on.

Also - you might recognize those shoulder from another custom Mando suit... I've seen it on this forums - just don't remember who it was that designed those... but I just like the design so much, I just couldn't help but include them in my custom suit

Here is what I have so far... for design.
I think that's gonna be it for the design stage...
I'm ready to get building... starting with the bucket. Just printed WOF template and will see what it does (sorry Skup - WOF template will work better with craft foam ) when I start putting it together - I'll have some alteration to do but it should be easy enough.

Let me know what you think

Well - hope double (even triple) posting is not prohibited

Here is a bit of progress about my bucket.
Like I was saying in my previous post - I've been using WOF template and already modified some little things to get to the custom look I'm searching for. Here are the pics of what I was able to achieve a little craft foam and hot glue.

And a view from the side

    Don't mind the bulldog :P

Craft foam is just a thin sheet of foam that is available at michaels, or any other craft store, its the kind that kids use to make little designs out of. Its cool stuff to use but is not too sturdy. However, if you arent going to be rubbing your helmet on the ground then, craft foam will do you good.

    Thanks.
And craft foam is something like this:
    http://www.makingfriends.com/store/m...roduct_Code=11

It's a time of polyurethane foam that is usually used for crafts... since it's easily "bonded" using hot glue or some normal white glue - it's also "thermo-shapable"... if heated and then made to cool in a certain position, it will keep it's form once cooled. It's sold in sheets of different thickness (usually 2 millimeters - but can go up to 6 millimeters) and in different sizes (usually in sheets of 9'' x 12'' - but I've seen rolls of 36'' x 5').

I'm always working with that stuff... it's just so easy making things with it... and I "developed" a good enough process to turn craft foam in decent looking armor. There a bunch of tutorials out there explaining the process... but I did refine a bit to my own liking - to use material that I had an easier time getting my hands on.

Yeah - it's not that sturdy - but then... there are way to make craft foam hold a bit better. Everything I do with craft foam that need better support (like that bucket) - I will always double the sheets (stick 2 sheets together with hot glue)... and if I need even more support - then I stick a cheap plastic sheet between the 2 sheet of craft foam... and it works wonders

    Re: FullMetalSam First project

Well it's been exactly one month since my last post in this thread... and I've advanced this project quite a bit - changed a lot of the designs after navigating through this forums and also the Mercs forums. Found there was a little too much Red and Black mandos out there (not that there is anything wrong with it - but as Skupkilson once said: us custom need to stand out a little bit ). I also though a "squary" look would be more fitting to a mando that the "circly" look of my orriginal design.

Anyhow, here are some shots of the finished pieces.

Still need to work on the guantlets, the guns (going for 2 small custom blasters (jango-style) instead of a big one - even if that's what I have in the pictures), the soft parts (belt, pouches and holsters as well as some kind of cloak and kama) and a whole lot of other things.

Let me know what you think.
