Thanks. :)
actually, most of the designs with the exception of the ones on the helmet and the collar armor will be sculpted on there. I plan on using wonderflex for the base armor then bondo over that and finally using this stuff http://www.allfixepoxy.com/servlet/t...ine/Categories to sculpt the designs. Has anyone ever used it and know how heavy it is? Also I'm not entirely sure how well bondo will work with wonderflex. Any suggestions?

dont know about wonderflex or allfix but i do know about this stuff http://www.jeffvalentstudios.com/sto...d112d0092ef27f
i use it for sculpting and it would work well for what you plan to do. it also takes paint perfectly and bondo should stick to it just fine as well.
also another idea (depending on how steady your hands are :D and how good your glue gun is) you could use a hot glue gun, just draw out your design onto your armor and then just trace it out with the hotglue gun. then use bondo to smooth it out, fill in gaps and what not B^)

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
Oh My God that is going to be HARD to get those details... Are they going to be painted detail or sculpted detail?
I cant wait to see this one come to life.
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
looks interesting... that's a lot of detail, which means a lot of hard work!
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
some of the details can be done with hot glue.
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
Hot glue would be fast and look like beads of metal brazing..BUT
if you use Apoxiesculpt... It'll bond to the plastic and last forever.
You ran roll is between your fingers (like playdough worms) and
then apply it to the armor. Then use water and some clay sculpting
tools and get BEAUTIFUL raised details. Itll take forever and a day,
but It'd look awesome and last. If your interested google out apoxie
sculpt and lothlorien bow in the same search and see some of the
excellent leaf designs the guy did on his "bow of the golden wood".
N/M heres the tut: http://www.bowstick.com/makingthelothlorienbow.html
Nice Concept! Good Luck for sure!

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
I *love* it. When my man and I got married three weeks ago, I wore henna (because of my background) for the ceremony (and after as it stays on for almost a month), and this idea is almost like henna designs on armour-- very cool. Wish I'd thought of it before! It'll be pretty tough-- I'm a bit surprised to see a first-timer going for something so ambitious. Are you used to working with your hands or is this, as a whole, something new for you? Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing this come along! Good luck, Tori.

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
This really reminds me of armor that would be used in the Malazan Books of the Fallen series. Something Adjunct Tavore would wear, or even Sha'ik reborn. (anyone read those books?)
Seeing that she can draw amazingly im sure sculpting will come pretty natural too
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
yeah i like the apoxiesculpt idea, rolling playdoh worms and squeshing them in place seems a little easier.
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
that apoxie sculpt seams to be a lot like the stuff i linked B^) a two part apoxie you mix and role out it's great stuff and dries in a few hours, its not for beginners though and can drive you nuts at times but if you are patient, you can make really great works of art!!
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
I like the idea and it's great that you've planned it so carefully, will always make for a better finished project :)
Love the Asian (Hindu?) feel to it.

That stuff looks pretty good. does it dry really fast, cause I think i'm going to need a least a half hour curing time? Also do you think puff paint would work as well as a glue gun for some of the finer dimensional work? I"m leary of a glue gun as it leaves threads.

Yes again! Henna was exactly what i based those on. I wanted a kind of tribal bellydance feel for her. Yeah I do work with my hands a lot. I'm a costuming major and sculpt leather masks for fun. I thought i'd try my hand at armor and star wars is my first fandom so why not make a mando?

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
Thanks for all the help and encouragement.
I've been very busy with college but I've managed to get some of my soft parts done.
Here is my Kama and the hip scarf that goes over it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/bothback.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../bothfront.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/bothside.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/kamaback.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../kamafront.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/kamaside.jpg
It's a bit hard to see, but the fringe of the hip scarf has some detail work I'm quite proud of.
I took some copper pennies (pre-1982) and put them on a railroad track near my home. When the train had passed I had these
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/coinprev.jpg
I took some model enamal paint in teal and purple and painted both sides like this, teal on one side, purple on the other
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...oric/coin2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...oric/coins.jpg
Then I drilled holes in them, and added beads and tassels
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/cointong.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/coinbt12.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../coindrill.jpg
Finally I added them and some other charms I made to the hip scarf.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../hipfringe.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...hipfringe2.jpg
They jingle quite nicely. Next up is my vest which I'm having to re-dye the fabric for as it didn't take well the first time. After that, belts ahoy! Any feedback or advice is welcome! thanks in advance

Train-smashed pennies is a time honored red neck game.Did this all the time when I was a kid back in Texas. I think I lost about ten bucks in change doing this. The best part of this is trying to find the pennies that flew off the track.

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
I used to do it when I was a trolley cop. I love how hot they were when you pick them up.

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
This is going to be an amazing build! I love the kama and your little Mando skulls. Good work!
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
First off, thanks everyone for your kindness and help.
Second Hey. I'm not sure where to put this question as it's not totally armor specific but, how do I change the color of a metal tassel from silver to antique gold? Would rub n buff work? Should I prime it first? I thought the silver would be ok when I bought em but they look ugly and fresh out the box, compared to the older look of most of the rest of the armor. Any ideas? Thanks
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
Hmm, the cheap way is to spray paint it with some metallic paint and then weather it with either ink or shoe polish. If you chose to go that way then primer would be a wise move.
Rub and buff though might work, and if you used it I don't think you'd need to primer the surface first.
Brown lacquer might work as well though.
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
you can antique the silver by boiling an egg, then removing the yolk and getting rid of it (eat it or what ever) then break the whites into pieces, put them and the silver into a ziplock bag over night. Should be nice and black by morning, then just remove what tarnish you want.
Or just get this:
http://www.misterart.com/g1855/St-Lo...Of-Sulphur.htm
it's used to antique copper but will do the same for silver ;)
IT IS TOXIC SO BE CAREFUL!!!

Thanks, I have left over gold paint and some shoe polish lying around.

appreciate it, but it's not real silver, or probably even silver plated. I'm thinking painted alluminium

Looking amazing! I love the detail, that's what really makes a set come alive. You should start a thread over on the Mercs to encourage all the other TN folk over there, we're kinda few and far between.

What's your name over on the mercs Gymbeau?
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
man how I miss the down home feeling I used to get when I lived back east, California is sooo "i'm in a hurry to get absolutly nowhere".
When I lived in Georgia, you could say "hay" NOT "hi" to almost anyone and get a smile in return, not like here in Cali, people think your a psycho if you greet them or smile.
Yall got it made.

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
Updates everyone!
I've been working on my soft parts and got quite a bit done.
First I've finished the tabards. The green floral kimono fabric that i had originally intended was sold out so I had to find
something else for the main fabric of the tabards. I found this skirt here, the sequined and embroidered panels would be perfect for my tabards.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...armor/tab3.jpg
I cut out the panels and added felt backing because I felt they were too flimsy
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tabbard002.jpg
I had some silver tassels for the bottom that I spray painted gold and antiqued
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tabbard008.jpg
This is the finished product
Front:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tabbard004.jpg
Back:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tabbard005.jpg
and on the kama:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tabbard009.jpg
I have also finished my vest, if you haven't read the thread i posted, I found a beautiful piece of leather, but didn't have enough to make my vest. I ordered another piece but it was a completely different color. After some wonderful advice from the people here, I used a design that worked with that.
Here is my vest front: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...r/P3260074.jpg
back:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...r/P3260078.jpg
side:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...r/P3260075.jpg
and here are some pictures of everything I have so far
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...r/P3260066.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...r/P3260067.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...r/P3260069.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...r/P3260070.jpg
I'm almost finished with my first belt no so I'll be posting that soon. Any comments or critique are welcome! Thanks in advance
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
The Kama looks amazing. I love the detail and fabric choice, it's really starting to take shape to your original drawing. If the armor looks half as good as the soft goods do so far you will have an amazing and super detailed mando! Very impressive.
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
This is going to be so ornate! I'm sure Trisha Biggar would just love your Mando!
-
Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
looking pretty cool,
Just wondering if you have seen the other threads on female mando armor, one idea was to use a female mannequin torso which are like $10 on ebay and cut it out to give you the foundations. Depending on the type you get, most plastic cements will stick to it, and because they are fairly firm, it may prevent sulptured work from falling off.
But very impressive and thanks for sharing.

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
The soft parts are the most important parts to get right and I honestly think this is going to come out absolutely fantastic!
Can't wait to see your progress on this!
Oh and there has been talk about using cheap fencing armour for the plates as well.

Thanks,
The mannequin is a good idea. I was going to do wonderflex but I'm so leary of using bondo or resin as I don't really have a place to work with it. Do you have to smooth the surface at all? You say they're firm but would re-enforcing the inside of the mannquin plates with wonderflex help? Thanks again.

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
I like the East Asian/ Indian look you have going here. It's different from any other custom Mando I've seen. Good Luck with this!

As long as you are prepared to put the arm work in, bondo is a very good shaping tool, especially if you want natural shapes.
I made my krayt for my Krayt Dragon helmet completely out of bondo and in some ways, the way it laid out was really organic. However, at the same point, if you're clever, you can shape bondo just before it dries solid with an exacto knife, it really cuts down on sanding time.
Resin your fears are founded, but bondo? On a sheet of paper, mix it with a piece of plastic and away you go.
Here's me giving away all my lil secrets, but your project is worth it! :)

Hee! Thank you very much. That alieviates a great deal of my fears about bondo. I'll probably still use the putty because I'm much more comfortable sculpting than carving, but I feel better about using it for the thigh and shin armor

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
Wow, that is just nuts. To see your initial drawings my only thought was "good luck with that... you are super ambitious and might be biting off more than you can chew." Then coming down through the thread and watching you bring your drawings to life... amazing...

Wow and a half, Vod. Looks absolutely amazing

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
If you want to, you can go over that bucket with liquid boot polish and then wipe it off quickly, it would really enhance the pattern you have at the mo :)

WOW!!! Talk about taking it to the next level! This isn't just a customized costume...this is a work of art!

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
that looks awesome! the only thing i'd have to say about it is that with as colorful and decorated the rest of the costume is, the boots seem kind of boring and draw attention to themselves. a little boot adornment, or some armor would really make it shine!

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
Dang, woman! That's crazy awesome!!! Excellent work and I agree with saint_nasty on the boots. But other than that: fantastic!

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
i've been following this thread for about 1 year now and it looks great. you got your plan right and stuck by it. the finished costume looks almost identical to the first drawing.
great work

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
Incredible. As mentioned, add a little armor to the boot tops and you'll be upgraded to "Legendary." :D

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
I guess I will be the only dissenter from what is a great looking kit. There seems to be something wrong with the connection between your chest plates and your belly plate and I really can't place what it is.
However I also get the funny feeling it is a niggle for you too, so, apart from the fact it is great as is, it needs to be comfy and workable for you, so get that niggle sorted :)

Check out number nine! ;) I did end up adding something to the boots, just some spats made from leather, which I think i'll end up stiffening. And Saz, you're right about the vestl The magnets inside kept bunching and stretching the leather and wouldn't let the plates sit right. I'm currently upgrading to snaps and making an all new vest.

Wow! It is amazing to see a females take on this. Has a Middle Eastern/Indian look to it. I love your concept drawings (start to finish) Thanks for sharing your talents on this board!

holy amazin detail batman!

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
Congratulations on an amazing build!
I especially love the slight pearlescent nature of the paint on your bucket, looks almost like an active camo suitable for felucia! hehe.

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
Thank you
Some changes have been made to the armor.
I have replaced the collar, the gauntlets, and the vest.
I did a photoshoot with the new pieces and the only pics that came out well were helmet off, sorry about that.
I'm thinking of moving the breast plates closer to each other and possibly adding some sort of back plate.
Any thoughts on that?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/DSCF1363.jpg
I also made another set of armor to look more like traditional mandalorian armor and less fancy pants.

That baby got me in the Mando Mercs, but any thoughts on how to punch it up would help.
thanks in advance!

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
I think adding a backplate like you mentioned would look good. Especially if you shifted the cape to just one shoulder so that it shows.
I'm sure it's already been noticed, but looks like the ab plate is really sticking out in the side-on pictures.
I was also wondering about the holster hanging so low? I'm sure that's what you intended, I'm guessing an homage to carrying a scimitar? Does look a bit odd though, and hard to reach.

Actually that plate has been giving me fits. I cannot get it to stay close to me for love or money. Should I adjust the vest or try more velcro? The holster is mostly supposed to be out of the way of the pockets, it is hanging low though so I shall move it up. Thank you very much again.

Re: Fem-mando first timer. WARNING Image heavy
maybe a snap together button on the top center of the ab piece. mine does that and i'm probably going to use all snaps once i make a vest out of real leather.
