Desert Mandalorian Warrior - "J Fenn"

One of the guys in my garrison is working on his custom Fett and asked it I would post his progress. Just don't ask how many times he has been to Iraq, I lost count. He bought a lot of the parts from ebay. I made the knees, cod, and the center diamond.

    Background on "J Fenn"

"The background info is that after spending some time in the sand box -- I wanted to create a Mandalorian that fit the color scheme that is prevalent over in Iraq. I want to keep everything simple and little smaller - since that terrain is harder to move around in.

So the Jet pack is not as thick in the back -- you'll see. The gauntlets will be some what the same but no lights -- since lights carry through the distance --- so very streamlined and dark. Everything will be keep in the helmet. The pants, shirt, shoes I actually wore in Iraq - part of the civilian dress in personal security work.

I just wanted to make other custom that has a high probability of being a real character... I want the Jango and Boba aspects - but no the actual movie detail. Something a little different."

I think all the soft parts will be from Iraq. So, they will have that nice used look.

Thanks ASOK for posting this for me.

I have updated some of the paint on the chest piece - when I get everything by 17 AUG 2007 - I'll be ready to show up at GEN CON 07 in Indy to present it for the first time...

I still have the gauntlets to finish as well. I hope to have the Jet Pack done by SAT - and place the Armor pieces on by then as well. I went for the worn look - nothing ever stays new in the desert anyway.

I'll keep sending ASOK progress photos over the next week.

Thanks for the help TDH members who did all the work on Jet Pack drawings, photos, and gauntlets...

The colors and weathering look great. Using two colors on the damage gives it a lot of depth. The only color I'm not sold on is the teal vest. It seems that a tan or brown would work better. Just my 2 cents.

    Great job!

that weathering is very impressive, love the color scheme and definitely the used look
i still dont get how you guys do the 2 coats of damage, everytime i try to do it the outer most layer cracks and bubbles on top of the second coat...
maybe i should try different paints

anyway, great job so far on the armor and i cant wait to see it completed!

Sounds like your paint is reacting to the silver undercoat. Test some different brands together. Usually the same brands don't do that, but I had it happen to me also. Testing is all I had to do =D

Anyhow, armor looks excellent! You took the same approach to your JP that I did with mine and variated it by putting the cones coming streight out of the bottom. Gives it a more sleek look that way. One of our members in Mercs, Kantis, is making a desert custom and putting wraps around certain parts of his armor to simulate alot of dust storm walking =D

this is awesome armor. i have some of those pouches too. The braided belt... should it be white? Maybe the teal of the vest or sand color of the helmet.

And i think your design on your shoulder armor is cool, i just can't see all of it, can i get a shot of that? what is it?

Re: Desert Mandalorian Warrior - "J Fenn"

The vest is actually Forest Green. The under shirt is tan and the pants are tan - which is what we wear over there. SO I had to Make my vest Green to set off the pants and shirt - plus there is some green being worn in around the two rivers over there.

The Hillah Swat team uses a Scorpion as there symbol and its where I served last - they are the only ones that actually support the US over there - (getting off the soap box) so - its to their honor.

Here's what my parts consist of:

4'x8' Sintra 1/8inch thick (Plastic Solutions. Louisville, KY) $28
2.5 inch nose cones (Hobby Town) $3 ea.
    T-Rail (Hobby Town)
    Cup (set of 8 @ Dollar Tree - $1
    Nozzels - 4 pk orange safety cones @ Dollar Tree - $1
2 inch pipe for sides (Lowes)
3 inch pipe for main tank (Lowes)
    Bondo _($6 Walmart)
8 pks of Plastic Welder (Walmart) $3.49 ea.
Gopher Poison (Ace Hardware) for Missile Cone $6
    Dremel
    Sandpaper
Pk of razors for sculpting & cutting
A few other pieces from Lowes PVC section...

I'm keeping the belt White and Brown -- again colors seen in the M.E.
I didn't want to go too brown and with everything since my under tone with my pants and shirt will be Coyote Tan. The actually color of the armor is as follows:

    Silver (base) Walmart
    Coyote Tan (Camo) Walmart
    OD Green (Camo) Walmart
    Dark Grey Primer Walmart

I used Incredible White Mask - Frisket - bought at Hobby Lobby

My weapon is a converted M3 Grease Gun 0 used by the Allies during WW 2 - I wanted again to stay with Lucas by using those type of weapons...I'll have the final version done by this weekend - I'll send pics to ASOK.

Thanks for all the comments - I believe when it comes together you'll see why I did certain things with the color scheme...

Again - you guys did alot of work before me -- so I read alot here and learned alot from you - so keep putting stuff up and commenting.

Wow, yeah, maybe try some new paint.
Or make sure the surface of the other color paint is pretty clean, it worked fine on my armor, and I got the different paint color weathering just fine,.

Re: Desert Mandalorian Warrior - "J Fenn"

Like ASOK said - he provided the cod piece, and knees - all of which made my job easier. His knees went together flawlessly and the cod piece was really nice.

The Armor plates I got from a guy ion E-Bay for like $35 -- including the back pieces - really excellent job -- some sanding and minor cutting to even the edges out - and "BOOM" after four different coats of paint colors and masking --- which will drive a person insane -- they were done.

The Jet pack and gauntlets will be made from scratch - provided I got the info from TDH Wizard of Flight and Lisa Fett templates -- (anyone else I forgot to mention I apologise)

The one member using cardboard -- caught my attention - SO I'm going that route next week with some serious fiberglass coating inside and out to make them solid with nice edging. I believe (theory) that using alcohol on the cardboard to wet it - then form it will be better - since it will evaporate quickly. Once that is done -- using light coats of contact cement will hardened the pieces - then I can start applying the fiberglass gel.

That's the plan -- please give me a shout if you have already done this and it did or did not work. I read the post where the member is using a white paste/masking on his cardboard shells to hardened them. I was thinking maybe liquid Viagra -- but I was afraid I might get it on my fingers and permanently disfigure myself!

Again 0 thanks for all the comments -- you guys that did this before me gave me alot to think about and plan for.

Since it is made out of Sintra -- it is attached on one side by plastic welder and a strip holding both the top and bottom calm shells together -- on the other side I plan on fixing Velcro to it to hold it in place. It fits nicely -- also plan on putting a strip of foam on the upper part to hold it in place on my arm -- pre-test show that it will be very snug!

So far the Right one is done -- painted it same color as the jet pack -- since my shirt is coyote tan -- the paint came out like a mirror -- so the weathering should stick out -- it's drying right now...

Thanks for the comments -- more to come!

Once I bought my helmet and then my knees, cod piece, and diamond...I started there in MAY/JUNE time frame...after that -- I then bought my armor front and back -- painted the different layers for weathering....

I then moved to the jet pack in July -- all of July -- then I finished off the gauntlets --- basically 12 hours on each one... I used 1/8 inch Sintra and a heat gun... the jet pack and gauntlets were made by hand -- from templates by WOF and LisaFett. I basically worked whole days from morning to night -- I say I have a few hundred hours in this set. From sanding, painting , using Bondo, cutting, fitting, you know -- the whole business....

I think it came together really fast once everything was done --

I think that's supposed to give it a desert nomadish look (looks Arabic inspired).

I almost think it would look better with a darker flight suit. I know you haven't weathered it..but try putting some different material objects next to the armor. Maybe a dark dirty tan color?

i think it's supposed to be like a shemaugh (don't know if thats the right spelling). Which soldiers sometimes use to keep sand and stuff out of their faces

Corby44 - yes you are correct -- I used this particular one when I went out in public -- it was bought in Iraq at a market shop from a local.

Black is usually worn by Shia - the area I was in - most Sunni where the red. However, I was also told if one makes the pilgrimage to Mecca - they were the red. So - the pants, shirt, shoes, and head wrap came from Iraq. Again, I wanted to stay within Lucas and his vision - but incorporate slowly those things that make this mandalorian unique...

    Hope you like it...

i like it alot, the colors are different but very unique. the shemaugh is cool too; the only real issue i have is the footwear completely breaks the fantasy of it all for me. are you planning on something different with them eventually?

    I love the blaster the best. That's great. MP-40 w/ e-11?

    The whole ensemble looks great.

    Thanks for all the comments...

Per the shoes -- I have looked for something - but these I actually wore in Iraq - I had another pair just like them - but those were badly damaged - sp I DX'd them. Until I find a suitable shoe that fits the whole "desert" image I'll probably stick with these. I don't think I will be using combat boots or placing a "armor" plate over them -- I wanted to keep it simple and functioning - since sand is hard to get around in anyways - these shoes are form fitting and don't weigh that much - which is also why I skipped out on the leg plates. Too much armor in sand will bog you down - this is from personal experience. Again - I wanted to incorporate things I wore in Iraq with this armor -- the lace up shoes might not do it for everyone - I knew this when thinking about what type of shoes to wear...but for now - this is it...

I wouldn't worry all that much about the laces. Thats a preference thing honestly. If at some point it bugs you, just use a pair of boba spats to cover them and it's an easy solution.

All together it's a nice suit of beskar'gam.

Maybe you should hit the whole suit with a sandblaster, not too much, just give it that, "It's been through a sandstorm" look.

Phil - good question on the jet pack - my present duties right now have me removed from my armor - I had planned on designing a "rack" that will be used to hold the jet pack - with the intention that I can hook it on my back by myself - without assistance. I had some ideas - but had to leave for awhile. It's something I will re-visit this summer. The initial rack was to heavy - not that the J/P is lite -

Also - I was working on a strap system inside my flack vest that when I slide everything over my head - it all falls into place - then I hook my pack up - and go with it.

Of course this is the plan ...:jet pack

Okay - I did it. I finished the harness - and it only cost me $10. I found an inexpensive back pack at WalMart and used everything from it to make my harness. Since it is nylon - it slides into place. Tomorrow I plan on putting back on - taking some shots with the jet pack on for the full effect. I'm home on R/R and bored - so I put everything together - since I have OCD!

Anyways - I did a test run and it worked with out adding anything more to it.

So - I'm pleased with it. I listed the Flickr web page and added the test run to the J Fenn photos ... once I have the whole set - I'll ask ASOK to post them here so this thread will be complete.

Again - thanks for all the comments -- I also picked up a green shemaugh in Baghdad that looks a little better than the black/white... at any rate hopefully tomorrow or the next day everything will be in place for this thread...

I added five new photos to the J Fenn photo set -- these have me wearing the new green shemaugh and the Jet Pack itself -

Hope you like it - please leave any comments as well...

i was able to make a harness that fits inside the flack vest and everything slips right over my head and in place- it's a little tough getting it off - but it can be done - I did a test run before these photos and again this morning -- so I think I have everything in place. Of course - due tot he layering of materials - I will probably only wear this in A/C buildings or during the fall/winter time frame...

Awesome work TK1799jhw, the pictures of your jet pack harness have given me the inspiration that I needed, as my jet pack build is nearing the stage where I'll have to make my harness.

Now I have a good idea to start with, you have my most humble thanks.

Re: Desert Mandalorian Warrior - "J Fenn"

ASOK - thanks again for posting these here -- the whole project is finally done... I would again like to thank ASOK for his input and aid in this endeavor - as well as WOF and Lisa Fett -- also all you guys and gals out there that did this before me and posted everything you did on here. My first armor is and always will be the Stormtrooper -- but this is something private and I enjoyed doing it. I worked all last summer - in the heat with sanding and Bondo and super glues -- I might still be high -- but it was worth the sweat and time it took to do it right and get everything down like I wanted it. I hope anyone passing over this thread will look at the dates and see how long it really took - and it really didn't cost me that much in expense -- I never put something like this together before -- but I wanted it to be accurate - more for the films and legacy that we all grew up with - and that inspired us to do what we do in life. Hell - I'm actually fighting real insurgents -- but this project allowed me to step out of that world into something that I enjoyed when I was a kid. I know if I had put something like this together when I was 11 yrs old _ I would be famous in my neighborhood. I'm sure we have all did birthday parties or showed up at an event - and the look on the kids faces -- I would have loved to have seen a real S/T or Boba - or Vader - but clubs like this weren't around then... I hope you guys enjoy the photos and the look I was trying to achieve -- someday this will all go to my kid(s) - I hope they enjoy it has much as I have.

In the meantime, I will continue to scare the sh*t out of the neighborhood kids and maintain my security position at GenCon...

I really dig the arena/traditional jet pack. Your blaster looks like one of those old "grease gun" sub machine guns from way back. Kandosii job! 8)

I redid the plates - bought fiberglass - placed bolts/nuts on each corner - and repainted the entire set.

The costume made it's first appearance at GEN CON 2009 on SAT - and until it's cold - probably won't wear it again. The leather belt malfunctioned - so I'm going with a velco black belt to hold everything together - like the other two parts.

Speaker system works fine as does the fan. Everything went on as expected - but the jet pack started to dip on one side from people holding it - so I walked around some what slanted...

All in all, great project - but I'm a trooper at heart...One of my gauntlets needs to be fixed too...after trying to get them off - one split in half on the wrong side. no problem...

Hey dude, love the suit. I'm always glad to see real soldiers who make their armor reflect their experience. I'm doing a VERY similar armor suit. Big difference is mine's more green and grey, not so much desert stuff... that way I can use my issued boots and webgear with it (cheapskate I know). Stay safe ner vod.

Beautiful blend of colors! I think he needs some more leg armor, but that's just a personal preference. I do like that blue, though- a lot.

Re: Desert Mandalorian Warrior - "J Fenn"

It appears to be an M3 grease gun. US made WWII-Vietnam era .45 cal submachine gun commonly used by US troops who needed a reliable, compact weapon for either specialized use or personal defense. Commonly used by Rangers, Paratroopers and Officers as well as Tankers and Engineers during WWII and Korea. In the Vietnam conflict it was occasionally used by US and S. Vietnam troops who had similar requirements, as well as US military advisors to the South. It makes a heck of a blaster tho.

the M3 was and still is used by US Army cooks. we always joked that if you were standing close and directly in front of a cook, the bullets would bounce off you. I think its stamped sheet metal to make it easier and cheaper to produce. think it shoots .22's with a very low muzzle velocity?

It shoots .45's at a relatively low muzzel velocity (around 275m/s-ish )

Re: Desert Mandalorian Warrior - "J Fenn"

yes it is stamped sheet metal to make it cheap and easy to mass produce, remember it was developed in the 1940's. No, the military variant does not shoot .22 rimfire, it does however shoot a 230 grain .45 ACP slug at a velocity of around 900 FPS. so yeah A'den ur about right. It fires in one of 2 modes, semi or full automatic. I have not heard of Army cooks still using it, the services... i mean "force support" guys in the AF are issued M9s or M16s when they deploy, but we generally contract out to the locals for that kind of work in theater, the Army may work differently. It was a highly reliable but heavy piece of kit. Most everybody in the US military carries some variation on the M16/M4 series now a days. Yeah, sorry about the encyclopedia militaria answer there...lol but it's what I do.

and yes - that's a M3 grease gun- I wanted to stay within the realm of Lucas using WWII weapons - plus I added the E-11 blaster tip.

copy that jay... still couldn't tell ya tho cause I'm AF... but yeah I'd totally believe it. It really is a good piece of kit, just a bit heavy and not the most accurate. The blaster version is AMAZING tho! Almost makes me wanna switch mine! lol
