Dented Variant Helmet Ideas

Stormrider

Ok, So my boba outfit is out partying right now, and im wondering what to do next.

I want to do a variant, and im going to start with the helmet. Heres the kicker. I want to collaborate with someone. So im going to model the basic helmet in max right now, and then ill attach it to this post. Then I would like to hear any ideas we would like to try on a helmet to make it unique.

Ill post the pic shortly, maybe that will motivate someone to work on this with me. Working alone gets rather boring:)

ciao

We've had a couple people in Mercs who have done masks based on the T-visor for assassin style armors. Also had a member who made a cool re breather w/ RF.

I read threads where someone talks a lot about doing things, and never does, and thats not my intention here.

My idea in a nutshell is making a mando helm that has a rebreather unit of some sort, and has one side of the face set up as a sniper helm. indented for the rifle.

Asymetrical is difficult though. Im working on a 3ds max model of the basic fett helm now, the cheek is the only real difficult part, once I have that the way I want it, ill post it and maybe we can discuss it more:)

Hope I didn't give the impression that's what I expected to happen here, Stormrider. I've enjoyed reading your posts and following your builds here and on the Mercs. I just wanted to voice interest in seeing what comes of your idea, as I don't think I could contribute in any other way.

No, Ioelus, I didnt mean to sound like I though that. I just wanted to say that its my intention to do the 3ds first, and then start either a scratch build or a build up from a old DP i have laying around.

I really just want ideas, once I get the mesh built, itll be easy to kick around ideas with people without wasting money or resources.

Im working on the cheecks in the mesh as I type. Its difficult to get a smooth angled curve like the cheeks. The rest isnt hard at all. its just a matter of creating the shapes and letting max do the rendering.

More to come soon I hope.

Wow! If I wanted to do a custom Mandalorian. I'd probably want to do it the same way as your picture :p

I was thinking...for the tubing.. Where it stops next to the cheek, maybe you could put some metal grill? Like silver mesh or something to make it look like ventilation tubing?

I'm not sure how to explain it...but at each end of the tube, where the black part is..try putting some silver mesh grill in the tubes. I think it would look really cool man!

And another slight change. My idea is also to have a track on teh eye ridge. And instead of the eye stalk lowering down, have it slide around the forhead on a track.

Ideas, Comments?

Mason,
that is looking like a really menacing helmet, can't wait for this one to come into the flesh, so to speak

A few questions: Where do the tubes go? Into a pack or something else on the back?

Have you considered weight? Weight on top of the head doesn't affect movement the way weight at the sides of the head or lower does. The rebreather ends seems massive. If mostly air, no big deal, depending upon the material used for the outside structure. The design is very cool--I'm generally not big into the hoses coming out of the face, even with Rohlan Dyre, but this I like.

In an earlier post, you mention modifications for the sniper side. Do you still intend to try this? What exactly do you mean by an indentation? I assume you'd go on the right side, unless the shooter's left-eye dominant. I was just thinking the other day how hard it would be to actually look through a scope with these helmets on. The mod you'd have to do would be significant if you're going for realism...

I like it!

Real quick, try adding an antenna looking piece on the right earpiece, starting just a little bit above the right cheek of the helmet.

Just wanna see how that would look.

I would either not worry about doing the indented mandibles, or get rid of the curve and go with straight lines on the mandible indentions. Would give it a much more symmetrical look and keep the menacing point. Keeping the curve in the indention makes the re-breather unit look kinda cramped in. If your gonna go full custom on the helmet, then might as well completely re-invent the look to suit your idea =)

Might I suggest you junk the standerd RF and do a permenatly or hinged recticle crosshair type scree. Sort of like what goes over the eye of some of the soldiers in Halo.

Just so you know I am going with a breather unit for my custom mando do you mind if I end up stealing the cheek idea?

Me no like, I personally think the cheeks are her most recognizable design, to hide them is a shame imho. would be nice to see different style ears on the variants though.

EDIT: Here's the thing, as a stand alone i dont like, bit if the rest of the armor had hose tanks or whatever, it would be a bitchin variant underwater suit, maybe for kamino : )

I like it.. very good start/concept and I agree with the comments about the lower cheeks areas? If you were to square them off the black/filter sections of the re-breather would sit in easier.
I presume that the tubes that flow from the filters go around and into the rear of lid... this would form your re-circluation part of the system.... filter from the front and fresh into the rear?

Thanks for the input.

Yes, they circulate into the rear. Right now they dead end into the rear, but in reality every piece will be molded, set into the helmet.

The max model, for simplicity I am not modifying the helmet just building on top of it ala clay if you will.

The re-breather system would be hollow. Otherwise your right it would be too heavy. Thin canesters, and tubing. I dont know how to explain this but.... theres a toy thats a long THIN plastic tube, with ripples/ridges all the way down it. When you swing it it goes oomswweiiiiimmmmm kinda like a lightsaber. They are usually orange or red. Thats the lightweight tubing I invisioned.

This is just my start, ill make some of the adjustments today, and post some more mesh pics with some of the suggested changes.

Thanks again for looking

Ok, I took a lot of the input and revamped the model quite a bit.

I remember seeing marrow suns custom, and I liked the changed shape of the eyes. I added some vision, and angled them to resemble a stormtroopers 'pouty look'

I took the b ack of the helmet, and put in some stormtrooper esque rebreather tubing, and put small sensor/outputs on the mandible.

I by NO means did the ear pieces correctly I did them just to give the idea of what would be where and how.

A couple ideas for mandible filters is to have a hose go from the right one, into the ?? dental piece?? on right cheak, and on the left cheak, have it go into the small rectangle on the mandible. Sort of like a cycle.

I added an avi and some jpgs, let me know whatyou think.

Thanks for looking... again.

Right click ans save the .mov file (quicktime).

Remember that I rendered it in VERY low res. The angles are close the some of the porportions arent quite right, but I wanted you to get a feel for what im going for. The mesh isnt made to render in high res. Its not all quads, its just made for reference when I start hashing this out for real.

Kind of the missing link between mando and commando.

hmmmm... I like the more compact filters better as previous looked very TK? But as with most 'battle' gear those could be the upgrade for when going into heavier smoked/sanded areas? like a bolt on... if that makes sense.

I don't know about the 'peak' that has been put onto the brow, this makes it look like a batting helmet... most scratch builders use these when making their lids. :confused
Visor looks good too, but maybe reduce the upper cheek height to allow greater depth to the eye slot. Also the cheek area looks as tho it may be snug to the wearer...

Just my 2p... ;)
