    Custom mando costumes

Hey guys and gals, firstly let me introduce myself:

My name is Sarah im 21 from the west coast of Scotland. I am planning on getting a hold of mando armour etc as I already have an unfinished helmet. I am planning on buying snowtrooper armour also as it just looks very cool.

I was just wondering, or was curious to know what your own custom jobs looked like?

Im finding it hard getting a hold of any kind of jumpsuit roughly the same colour as Boba's as im 5'3" and being female. Any help or advice would be great.

P.S None of you would know where to get snowtrooper armour would you? I heard theres people in Germany and Italy who make it.

    Anyhoo, take it easy..

    Hi Sarah; welcome to TDH!

There's lots of great people on here who I'm sure will be able to point you in the right direction for some bits and pieces.

I've sent you a PM about some excellent prop makers in the UK as well - avoid those customs charges!

    Re: Custom mando costumes

Hi Paul, thanks for the quick response.

I've been having problems and basically worried incase the mando or snowtrooper armour wouldn't fit me as i am quite small being 5'3 ish and a small build. UK size 12.

Do you think I should have any problems?

Do you know any snowtrooper armour makers in the UK, EU or Worldwide?

    Kind regards

    Sarah

There are TONS of progress threads here on TDH that should be extremely helpful. For female armor, I would read this thread started by Rotton..she definitely has one of the best female contoured sets I've ever seen.

Hmm - dunno; a mate has just built an excellent Snowtrooper - I'll ask him where he got his stuff from.

Not sure how well a Snowtrooper would meld with a Mando though.

    Heya Sarah!
I have had the same worries, I'm only 5'3" too and a 10. I'm having to scratchbuild my helmet and armour becuase everythng else is too big and to have it custom sized for me by another maker would cost too much. that said, i'm having a great time trying to figure it all out!
Anyhoo, just wanted to say hi to a neighbour, I'm from Paisley and didn't think there was any other ladies out here in Renfrewshire who were interested in this kind of thing!
Good luck with your armour hunt!

Hi Sarah, glad to have you aboard. There are several places to go for suitable flightsuits depending upon your budget. I'd recommend contacting BM for details of his flightsuits and weither he can make you one (I'll pm you his details).

Here's my custom (oh and I'm female too):

    Re: Custom mando costumes

I love the costume and colours, very pretty.

I've not chosen colours yet i was thinking of blood red for the front like boba's and 2 shades of grey/blue for the rest of the helmet and armour with orange shoulder bells. But im not sure. Any other suggestions would be appreciated

P.S that jumpsuit looks good on you too, does BM do various colours or just that one?

I believe he is happy to supply them in what ever colour you wish (if he reads this thread I'm sure he'll step in to correct me if I'm wrong).
As to colours for your armour I'd recommend using one of the line drawings that can be found in various threads to test your colours out on before commiting to anything. My own personal opinion is that darker colours work better on the whole as they are more in keeping with established EU canon (there have been official drawings of yellow armour done though so precident has been set). Weathering I feel is also a must (although there are those who disagree with me) but it is established canon that Mando like their armour to show scratches, dents and dirt (adds to the tough image).

    Re: Custom mando costumes

Hey people, still haven't decided on what colours to have for my mando armour/helmet. What do you all think about a blood red at the ridge part like Boba's with the rest a dark grey and lighter grey? Suggestions welcome as im not the best with my imagination :o

As for jumpsuits, i cant seem to find one even close to my size

BM may be the only option. Its sooo frustrating that because of my small build it restricts me to certain things. I wonder if i'd have problems with the armour pieces?

    Take it easy.

If you make your own armor then you shouldn't have a problem. Just cut them down to fit your frame =) If you use Sintra then that shouldn't be a problem.

Since you are a woman and do have a "chest," I would believe you should scale up the abdomen piece and scale down the left and right breast armour, this may make it look more proportional.

Hmm, where could i buy sintra from? And could i make it thick (real) looking like Boba Fett's?

The only problem then is my gauntlets.

    Re: Custom mando costumes

Most people opt for the 3mm sintra. I've done some work with it and it's thickness is good, you can use an exacto knife on it if you use a glove (unless you wanna get alot of cuts as sintra is sharp as heck.)

I'm not really familiar with UK suppliers, but if you google Sintra then you should be able to find one. Thats how I found the one I use.

    Re: Custom mando costumes

I bought a flightsuit on-line and modified it. So, if you're handy with a sewing machine, it shouldn't be too bad. My sewing modifications for the flightsuit:

    1. Removed the sleeves and collar.
    2. Restitched the shoulder seams. You can make the entire suit a few inches shorter, just by altering the shoulder seams. I was able to bring the waist up almost to my waist and make the crotch the right height.
    3. Open the seams of the sleeves, starting at the shoulder, at least part-way.
    4. Reattach the sleeves. Because you've changed the shoulder seams, you've made the arm openings smaller -- if they are too small, you'll need to open the seams below them, the sides of the suit, if you can still get your arms through, realize that the edges of the former seams at the upper part of the sleeves will overlap. You can also easily shorten the sleeves when you reattach them. Reseam the sleeves.
    5. Reattach the collar. Pin the front edges of the collar in place, then pin the middle of the back. Work out from the middle to get it even, realizing that you'll need to bring it out onto the shoulders a bit. Because you changed the shoulder seams, you made the neck opening smaller. But you probably don't WANT the neck opening smaller, so you'll reopen the shoulder seams, starting from the neck opening, until you've widened the opening enough for the collar to fit into it again.
    6. You can also shorten the hems on sleeves and legs, as needed.
    7. If you're very thin, you'll probably also need to take the suit in, at least a little, in circumference. Just remember, these things are not meant to be worn tight. I didn't take in any of the girth.
    8. There comes a point where you're better off getting a pattern and some fabric. I hate installing zippers with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, so I went the modification route.

I realize, looking at my description, that it sounds a bit complicated. It's really not, I'm just bad at explaining things. If anyone wants to try this method, I can try whipping up a couple simple diagrams that clarify what seams I'm talking about.

I think I've read some of the UK members mentioning that it's not called Sintra on the other side of the pond. But PVC Foam board is what it also goes by, might want to try checking for that instead.

    Re: Custom mando costumes

PVC foam board is what Sintra is everywhere. Sintra is a brand name for just that. Locally, the stuff I get is called Komatex, another brand name. If you call sign shops or plastic supply places and ask for PVC foam board you'll get the right stuff.

Interestingly enough, I was at Lowes Friday and found out that there is some very flexible moulding and trim listed as made from PVC. If it isn't PVC Foamboard cut into strips, I'd be very surprised. They have some different shapes and thickness, and while none are good for armor, they have definite potential for detail pieces and attachments.

I'm sure the same stuff must be available in the UK and EU...worth looking anyway. Remember, it is EASILY bendable. There is some other white synthetic moulding that is somewhat flexible but has a brittle center...don't get that stuff.

Its a dark navy blue, i was going to do a dark grey armour scheme but im not sure if it would match.

if I were you, I would also consider the plates being in a more female shape than the standard, maybe something along the lines of these two pics:

Aye, I'm from Iceland, we're two here on the forums. I visit Scotland every year, it's a beautiful country.

I think the only plates needed to do a female type look is the chest and in the above the belly armour is not included. Rotton has done the Vhonte Thervo one (the red), but I have no where to buy one, ask around... I'm a building newbie here, but I know Star Wars things.

    Good luck on it

Been a while since anyone posted here, but I have drawn two mando armor forms: one male and one female (based on Rotton's). If anyone wants copies to play with colours, they are in .jpg format and will work in any paint program. Let me know. By the way, I beleive gray and dark blue will go together just fine.

No prob on the files, just let me know where to mail 'em to or pm me and I'll get ya set. The male is based on Boba, but it wouldn't take 10 mins. to make a heavier Jango.

Hey Doomgiver, do a search for "Rotton". Her armor looks fantastic and is contoured for the female form. I'm waiting right now to hear back on some for my wife.
