Discussion on Array's Custom Mando Helmet within the Expanded Universe Bounty Hunters forum, part of the Star Wars Universe category; Hey All Just wanted to show you guys... and gals
Looking goodkeep us posted on the progress
Thanks guys. Just to let eveyone know I'm an absolute beginer so I have no experience in costume making so I've made some mistakes, like this of instanceI painted the light brown parts before the dark brown parts which was stupid. So if there are any other beginers who haven't painted their helmet yet please learn for my mistakes paint the dome, cheeks and back first or you may be kicking your self like I am
anyway, anyone know how to fix this?
Sarcastic Statment: Thank you.
Well Just an update, I restencelled the helmet and painted the silver parts that were missed the last time BUT... When I took off the tape and stencelling material it also took of some paint, primer and worst of all, the bondo! and I just ran out!so I reprimered and just remembered that I didn't sand it down
.
So I fixed the first problem and now have a new one!so I'm still kicking myself. I'll update you all when I've made some noteable progress

Are you using low tac tape like 3M painters tape? Tamiya also makes awesome masking tape in different sizes and its also very flexible.
Yeah I'm useing 3M's Painters tape. I think the reason it came of was because I droped the helmet the night before.
Sorry guys haven't had time to do much because of school work
So I got some bondo and started to patch up the parts that cracked off but other than that I haven't done much, hopefully I'll Be able to get back to working on this soon. but I wont leave you all empty handed here are some pictures from start to where I am now. Enjoy
Here is the helmet after I bondoed it
Here is the helmet after I smoothed the bondo and primered it
Here's the helmet after I sprayed it with silver paint
The bumpy things on the dome are bubbles made by tisue paper after a bug landed on it and promply died
Here's the helmet after I stuck to ears on for some reson I put them on after I painted it silver
FYI: The ears are actually made of bondo, I did not know if it was a good idea but they seem to work not sure though
Here's the helmet with the first coat of light brown paint
The helmet with the rangefinder on
the helmet with the paper off
And the ears and ear cap
RF Stalk also made of bondo
And you guys have already seen the helmet with the dark brown but here's the picture anyways
So hows my approach? does it look good?
You can clearly see the tape marks "stepping" from piece to piece and it creates a geometrically jagged edge. Solve this by either using more, smaller pieces of tape and overlapping them or by putting weathering on those high points so that the paint is scratched down to silver and most of that line is no longer there.
Ok Update
So I thought "I'm going to have to repaint some parts" then I remembered what apolifka said and took his advice thinking that if I botched it I was going to repaint any way right?
So I took my rotary tool and lightly slashed at the helmet and the end result is this
This part will be gotten rid of
So what do ya think?
It looks pretty good, with all the lighter scratches like that, you will have to come up with a good story, what I thought of just by looking at it is maybe racing through somewhere on a speeder bike? Perhaps a planet with lots of heavy dust/dirt where you where constantly hit by pebbles in the air, or an area of heavy trees with branches hitting you as you navigated through. Just something to consider, having an idea in your head also helps with the weathering of the rest of your costume when the time comes. keep up the good work, that bondo ear peice looks good, I just hope it doesn't crack on you. Good luck
Thanks
Well I haven't thought about background story much; but was thinking a Jango clone that has been in a lot of battles, I know I know overused right? but I cant think of any thing else.
As for the skraches I was trying to get a boba look and I think I did pretty good. as for the lighter parts of the metal I think it is actually primer so its matte, just letting you knowalso I repainted the left cheek so it does not have that silver paint no more.
I will update when I've made more progress and thank all of you guys of all your positive coments.
