any advice for a novice?

Kyr am Galaar

Active Hunter
Su cuy'gar.

this is my first go at making beskar'gam, and i would appreciate any input from others who have a bit more experience than me.

only signed onto dented helmet today, with my character name, (hope people like it) but have been making the helmet for a while.

ive just finished putting the first layer of filler to smooth out the edges. I was thinking of covering it with fiberglass fabric and resin. would that work?

thanks in advance for the input

Welcome aboard...
Very nice start there? Dunno about FG-ing the outside? maybe use a little bondo to smooth out any external seams (dome) that you have... then sand? you could always FG the inside to strengthen it up?

Vor'e nod.

glad you like the start. i have just finished putting filler on the dome. it should set overnight, and sand it tomorrow.

thanks for the advice Mojo, will try it out and let you know what i do.

FG and a good mouse sander are your friend when scratch building! You've done an excellent job on this so far Kyr'am.

Best advice anyone can give you is to be patient. Take your time and don't get discouraged by any setbacks. Your off to a good start, and when it's finished you'll see the rest of your 'gam starting to come together.

much appreciated Novall.

Patince is not my strong point, but with this project, i intend to take my time, no matter how much i want to wear it. I do have a rough concept for the whole beskar'gam, but it may change at the painting stage.

i have an old plastic bin i intend to use for the armour. will be starting to mark it out soon. also invested in a few laser guns. i saw them on this site a while ago, with a comment they would make good carbines.

what exactly are carbines? im not sure!

no.

:p

not too sure but i think a carbine is a shorter version of a rifle. like chopped down. but i coudl be wring. i think the DeeCee is a carbine, yes? and the DL is the long version???

oh right. thanks vod. makes sence now. Glad im using the laser guns as hand guns, and custome making a rifle with similar features to the laser guns.

A carbine is a shortened assault type rifle.

Real world examples would be the full size M-16 machine gun which is a full size assault rifle...
M16_Simulation_Marker.jpg

Typical specs would be a barrell of 18-20" and and overall length nearly double that. It's a great medium range rifle for open combat.

An example of a carbine based on the same frame would be the M-4 carbine rifle...
custom-jg-m4.jpg

dimensions on this gun would be barrel lengths of 8-14". Generally, they have a collapsable butt stock to alter firing positions.

Carbine's have been around for a very long time, they are great for para-troops and urban combat. There smaller frames and shorter lengths are great for cramp areas. They are great for close to medium confined area combat. They are longer than a handgun which makes them more accurate at distance and, being on a rifles frame, they are able to fire a much higher impact round than a handgun. However, they are not as accurate a weapon at range as a standard rifle.

Here is an encylopedia's definition...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbine

In the Star Wars universe, examples of carbines would be the Imperial E-11 blaster carried by the Stormtroopers, the DC-15S and DC-17M carried by the clones and Boba Fett's modified EE-3 rifle. A classic example of large rifles would be the DC-15A carried by the clones and the DLT-19 heavy blaster rifle carried by the Stormtroopers. You can find good pix of each at www.wookiepedia.com

Carbines were also quite popular in the wild west. Easily carried on a horse, but better accuracy than that of a handgun. It's a pretty obvious conclusion then that carbines would be popular with Mandos - decent range and accuracy, but not bad in a close quarters brawl.

Either way, helmet's looking nice mate. You make that outta cardboard?

i got two laser guns, and they are perfect for carbines then. gonna need some big holsters though!

yep. made the helmet out of mounting board which is thick carboard. had a few sheets spare in the house and decided to give it ago.

now im hooked! am sanding the filler i put on the dome at this very moment.

here is the dome after its second layer of filler, not yet sanded. the first was a bit too patchy so i decided to add another.

it also alowed me to make the scratch that is on the left side of the helmet.

hope you like it.

A carbine is a rifle, it's not ment to be carried in a holster. Instead, it should be carried on a sling. Otherwise, you're packing Dirty Harry pistols.

Looking good, you've done an excellent job so far. ;)

I can't tell if it's just the angle of the pics, but your dome seems a touch on the short side ( in height ). Have you checked to make sure that you'll have enough room inside for some padding? Wouldn't want you to put all this work into your helmet only to find that your eyes don't line up with the visor.

Aside form that, all I can say is keep working on that dome to make it as smooth as you can. I spent two thirds of my build time on shaping the dome... filler, sand, filler, sand. As time consuming as it is, it's all well worth it in the end.

have been tasting it on my head more than is actually needed as i like to wear it. :) cant wait to try it on when its finished though.

will work more on the dome, as you said, and hopefully, it wont be too heavy with filler! ;)

thanks
