    Jan 13, 2013, 10:17 PM - Thread Prefixes #1

We are adding a number of new thread prefixes and in many of our forums will be requiring you to use thread prefixes for any future threads.

We also could use some help with defining thread prefixes for our Jango and Boba sections to help break down the major components of the costume or approaches to building.

Finally, we will need some volunteers to help us go back and tag past threads appropriately. If you are willing to step up to the plate, please let us know!

Why are we doing this? It will help further organize the site and allow you to more easily find the content you are looking for when a search just doesn't quite cut it!

We really appreciate you stepping up to the plate RF. We are going to finalize the prefixes but I will be hitting you up if that is still cool when the time comes.

That would be awesome Mike and greatly appreciated and would be even better if Chris could help. I'll let you know when we get the prefixes set for Jango which should be within just a few days.

So, here is a current list of our prefixes for Boba (which will essentially be the same for jango as much of their gear is the same).

    Jet Pack
    Shin Tools
    Blaster
    Flight Suit
    Vest
    Scalps
    Cape
    Girth Belt
    Ammo Belt
    Gloves
    Boots

The idea behind this is to break the costume down into its major components so people can find what they are looking for more easily. Too many prefixes and it becomes confusing. Too few and it is just too broad.

What are your thoughts on the current list. Do we need to add more?

You will note that you don't see things like chest armor and gauntelts or helmet because those have their own section on the site.

Once we have everything properly labelled, in theory, we could make Boba a single forum. Thoughts?

We need to add the side pouches and ankle spats.

This is true as far as the threads in said armor and helmet section but would they automatically get a prefix that way? Does the search function use the prefix when searching? Also Im not sure why its not like this but the advanced search doesnt allow you to search a forum.....personally I know you can go into said for and search it...and if you go into a forum click on search forum and then goto advanced from there this function is there...with the prefix option....however the regular old advanced up top doesnt have these options available unless you click on search single content type and I think that may make searching harder IDK if Im overthinking this.

Well since Mike threw me into the mix, I guess I could help out.........

Honestly though I wouldn't mind helping out in the Jango section. When the time comes to start let me know and I will do my part. Hopefully I will find some slow nights at work and be able to work on it.

What are the benefits of prefixes over vBulletin tags/keywords?

Prefixes are done really well in the Junkyard on theRPF, because there are filtering links at the top of that sub-forum. Are we going to do that here? Is the intent here to limit prefixes per-forum, i.e. users could only choose helmet-related prefixes in the helmet forum?

re-tagging/prefixing old threads will be a ton of work. Is this more efficient than say, having a Google search widget for the forum? I've never had a problem finding anything on this site using Google.

Would love to know people's thoughts...

Rich, my understanding is that prefixes are more easy to manage and more readily visible than vBulletin's tagging system (which I love in theory, but have found to be very messy and virtually useless).

That is what is driving this. It has worked exceedingly well at the RPF.

Yes. Prefixes can be managed in groups and groups of prefixes can be applied to one or more appropriate forums. These prefixes would be forum specific.

It will be a tremendous effort to take care of old content but we can force the use of prefixes for any thread going forward.

I don't know if it is necessarily more efficient, but it is more accurate. Google's search widget depends on two things; you knowing the exact right phrase to look for, and the people who post up content including that same phrase every time.

This solution doesn't exclude us using the Google search widget and my mind is not set in stone so if you have other thoughts or ideas on how we can handle this in an even better way, please share.

I would offer to help out Mullreel in the Jango section if needed. I am finding myself going back 21 pages looking at the older posts anyway. I like to see how the community got to where it is today and I like all the excitement that costume had back closer to AOTC. Let me know what I can do to help.

i didn't throw you anywhere! just thinking out loud if you'd come help.

anyway, art, will these prefixes be in a drop down box so mods would be able to click edit on a threads original post and from there open the prefix drop down, select the corresponding one, and then save changes?

Most of the forums have them already, but I want to make sure we have a goood list in place before we apply them to Jango.

I am more than happy to help with Boba Fett. I would very much like to increase my activity level here at TDH, especially in an admin/mod/site maintenance role.
