Probational Period Testing

Over the next few days, we will be testing a system that automatically requires users to wait 1 day before being allowed to post. This may cause some instability as it requires a massive number of permission changes. Please bear with us as we implement this new procedure.

The initial setup is now in place. We will be watching closely over the next few days to see if this process is effective in stopping spammers.

Dent, I think this may work. The Southern Outpost forums are like that too. it requires users to wait while a registration email is sent to them. and kristianps.. or whatever, whom asok banned, has also joined the Southern Outpost forums yet there has been no spam there. The mods there don't like users joining and no posting, because we get it a lot, so they just delete the accounts. TDH will probably go back to a little peace now. (y)

i am happy this finally happened. a one day wait isn't going to kill anyone. a lot better than weeks on other boards or requiring 30-50 posts before you can make a thread

I know many boards impose a lot of rules and regulations in regard to newbies. We hope to never discriminate against new members because we realize that they may be new to TDH but most are not new to online forums. We have only enabled the one day wait in hopes of cutting down on the tremendous amount of spam this board has received. As much as possible, we want to enable new users to become contributing members immediately. You never know what newbie might drop the next huge discovery in our laps!

I think this idea makes sense.

On the 501st NEG forum we require all new members to engage in email dialog with the GML before activating them. But, our garrison forum gets a lot fewer new people than this one does, so that's more managable.

In the absence of these resources, it seems like this is a good way to go.

I've just receive a message in my personnal e-mail adress:

This is a message from ********* at The Dented Helmet (

This is the message:

Greetings and blessed be,
Sorry to be contacting you directly but I just registered and it
won't let me post yet. I had some thought on your unusal but intreging
idea. Since I'm thinking of a custon mando suit myself I have beeen
think of variation for a bit now.

So the testing period is efficient, but when new members want to post, they use any methods if necessary!

I've just cut some unnecessary parts and replace member's name by ****, but this guy is very ingenious: he really wanted to post a reply, and he was in the probational period, so he have sent an e-mail to the starter of the thread.

So when a newbie really wants to add his 2 cents, the probationnal period is not an obstacle!

Either our testing has been a success or all the spammers of the world took Christmas through New Years off. Until further notice we will leave the 24 hour gap between signing up and posting in place.
