    Re: Signature restrictions

    Good evening,

I'd like to suggest allowing for slightly longer signature art. One of the most popular standardized banner dimensions on the Internet today is 468 by 60. 400 is cutting it just a bit close.

And by the by, I'd love to see an offical TDH banner in these dimensions.

    Be well,
    Thomas

That is entirely up to the Dent but for the time being, we ask that they only be 400 pixels wide Thank you!

    Re: Signature restrictions

As much as it will probably annoy some of you to have to change your banners... AGAIN, Thomas has an extremely good point. 468X60 is an internet standard and I believe we should stick by it. This does not mean your signature must be 468X60 (although I would recommend it) but it does mean that 468X60 is the MAXIMUM allowable dimensions. We will give a grace period through the end of the month for everyone to get their signatures in line, but starting Feb 1, if your signature image(s) exceed those specifications, you will be asked to change your image. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Why do the dimensions matter if the actual size is less than 30 KB?

    Two reasons:

First and foremost, it is a matter of vertical height. If you will compare how we have laid out this board compared to the old board you will see that we have worked very hard to remove every extraneous element that adds to unnecessary vertical height. What does this mean? It means you do not have to scroll as much to get to the information you really want to see. TDH is about information and being able to get information quickly and easily. Having to scroll past someone's 150pixel tall signature for the 5th time in a post does not lend itself to that effort.

Note: I am well aware signatures can be turned off in a user's prereferences, but some would like to see other's signatures without having to wade through a ton of very tall sigs.

Secondly, it is a matter of having standards and getting in line with them. Thomas made a very good point in regard to that. There may be times when someone would like to use yor signature image as a link to your website. This means more traffic and exposure for you which is a good thing. If your signature image is an internet standard in regard to dimensions, they are more likely to use it.

Is it really that big of a problem? I'm sure most people on this board would rather scroll the extra length than modify their signature. I say we should let the members decide with a poll.

I don't think it's much for The Dent to ask of us, seeing as he DOES own this board, and could put a stop to any sigs, if he wanted. Considering all that he and the admin have gone through recently, to keep TDH alive and FREE, don't you think it's reasonable for them to set standards without needing everyone's approval?

As you are very new here, I know you are not aware of this, so I will lay it out for you. The Dented Helmet is not a democracy and we do not vote. The decisions that are made are ultimately made by me and to a lesser extent by the rest of the admin staff. This may seem arrogant on my part but our form of "government" is purely a monarchy. The reason it is setup this way is that it is extremely efficient and it totally eliminates politics and politicking here at TDH. I have watched politics drag down a number of clubs and organizations and never want to see us fall into that quagmire.

With that being said, I believe any longtime member will tell you that I and the entire Admin staff continually bend over backwards to make TDH the best and most user friendly board it can be. We try very hard to take EVERY member's thoughts and ideas into consideration and do our very best to answer every issue. I openly encourage anyone to PM or email me if you have a concern or suggestion.

As any of the admins will tell you, I harp on them continually that our duty is not to RULE the members of TDH, but to SERVE them. We are your servants. However, there are times when we have to make decisions that may not be popular with a few members but we go forward with them because we feel it helps the many. This is the case in regard to signature image sizes. I apologize for the inconvenience it may cause you, but this decision is final, and on Feb 1 it will be enforced. Thank you for understanding.

"However, there are times when we have to make decisions that may not be popular with a few members but we go forward with them because we feel it helps the many." Like i said before, I strongly believe that many people would choose stick with the old rules.

As the Dent said, this is a monarchy and not a democracy. In this particular situation, a decision has been made and will not be unmade, reguardless of how many would prefer to scroll through long messages. The Dent was very clear as to why this decision has been made and we respectfully ask that you accept this decision As the Dent said, we are here to help and to serve and although you and others may not like it, it truly is for the good of the board

Re: Signature restrictions***CHANGE MADE 468x60 Pixels Image Limit***

Any time a member makes a suggestion; I look into it and check the feasibility.

When Thomas made his post (he also PMed me), I immediately went out and looked up internet banner standards. Just as he said, 468X60 is a well known and used standard. From there, I considered the feasibility of asking our members to change their signature images AGAIN and actually held off a bit because I didn't want to burden them. However, there are relatively few members with signature images and since I am a great fan of uniformity and standards and since it has the potential of a great savings to vertical height I made the decision to go forward with the 468X60 max dimensions a rule.

When you made your first post:

I took that into consideration as well and gave you a lengthy reply explaining the reasons for the change. When you questioned it further, I made another lengthy reply. It is not a matter of not taking your suggestion. It is simply a matter of your argument not holding water. Most of our members who have an image in their signature have already changed over and no one else has agreed with you while several have pointed out that it was no big deal for them to change their banner size. This is a non-issue, so please do not continue to make it one.

You know what? Just forget it. Every board I go to I usually don't stick around, I plan on staying here though. If that's going to happen i don't want to get on anyones bad side. Sorry, my temper got the best of me . I really like my new sig anyways. Thank you for not banning me. :thumbup

Thank you for your understanding and patience. We hope you do stick around here and continue to find TDH a userful resource and a friendly community.

Oh, and in regard to being banned, it takes a lot more than arguing about image sizes to get banned around here.

If you right click on your banner and select "properties" it will tell you the dimensions.

Hey, I don't usually do the whole sig thing, but my Profile Pic isn't coming up. What's the deal with the max being 100x100? Mines 100x103. Figures.
