    Nov 3, 2011, 11:12 PM - About fast referencing! #1

Hello all, Hope some one can help me out with this question. I would like to be able to log on and be able to click some where to go directly to something I am looking for like templates or a PDF file. I am starting to do my research on where I feel all the good information is but I would like to know if there is a way to be able to just click and go right to instead of thumbing through every thing to get there. Is it Possible?

    Thanks

    Clayton

You may want to take a look at the wiki if you had not already done so. That should be of some help to you.

The wiki was upgraded not so long ago and some of the information wasn't updated. Most of the important threads, or links to threads ar the 'sticky' ones in each forum.

So would you know a way to do a quick reference from the TDH site or something that will help fast access to forms, PDF's, or temples with out doing consent searches or forum hopping?

TDH isn't really a costume building checklist: It's a community. There's a ton of good information, but historically the goal of the site has not been to just make a "how to build a Boba Fett" suit. Spending time here doing research and getting to know the people and the costumes is a big part of the overall experience.

Once you know your way around a bit you'll find that most of the info isn't hard to find. For example, go to the Boba Fett Helmet section and you'll find sticky threads with paint lists, templates and other useful things. Same under the Boba Fett Costume section. The gallery link at the top has every picture you could ever want for reference.

In my opinion, Boba and Jango are not costumes that lend themselves well to quick in-and-out visits.

    Hello stormtrooperguy,

First of all You have very cool sites that I have been thumbing through. Great information and I like the vids too. Can't wait to go through it all and learn something.

But for your reply I do find your comments under some distress though.

As this site stated one of the reasons why I joined "TDH"

"Have you ever dreamed of building your very own movie quality Boba Fett costume from the Star Wars universe, but had absolutely no clue where to begin?"

"If so, then look no further. The Dented Helmet is a free online discussion forum and information archive specifically designed to help fans build high quality replica costumes of their favorite Star Wars based characters like Boba Fett, Jango Fett, Zam Wesell, and even Clone Troopers!
Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned convention costumer, TDH is here as a family-friendly community resource to provide assistance necessary for any skill level of fan to achieve their costuming goals.
If you've got passion for Boba Fett or Star Wars bounty hunters, the artistry and history behind their costumes, as well as a desire to see them brought to life by your own hands, then you sound like our kind of scum!"

I fully understand that this is not only a checklist for building costumes. I do see allot of information on here about building specific costumes. I do see all that joins building, buying, selling, or making some sort of costume or costume parts. The information is grand and spread over many post. As I have been seeing.

As a community I do see this too but as I have not been part of this community for very long and have not been in communication with any one here for more than a one or two brief post. Until last night when I started filling things out and posting I was not part of this community. I do however am very excited about the brief communication that I have had in my introduction post. I have might of found someone close to where I live to help me out and to guide me when needed. I sure did not think I would get lectured so soon for asking a simple question.

As any eager person to learn as I am I know asking questions and getting to know people and your surroundings is part of every day life. As far as in searching for information I am doing this too in consistent strides. I am learning my way around but do occasionally go to a post that i know of. Then to the page that I know where the information is (unless some one posted and moved it up or down the post) then refer to the information or post I was looking for.

I guess I am looking for is a way to bookmark the information on this site in a way like your favorites web sites. I do not haft to do a search when I know its in my favorites. I have all ready done the leg work to find it. When I am in need to refer to something I know, I point and click and then I am there. Scrolling through the information is just normal. But to be able to access the information from a place like a home page instead of navigating through post after post to get there every time would seem to be a greater ease of access.

Which in turn would leave me more time for conversation, comments, showoffs, builds, function with other potential TDH members, and anything else that the mind can imagine to be part of with this community.

I would hope that members that read this understand that I am new and just starting out. This is not a revolving door of in's-and-out's visits for me. I am wanting to learn, build and make friends as I am for sure anyone that has joined has considered. I am just looking for a convenient way to access information that I find here.

And enjoy the people and knowledge as they come.

Thanks for your concern and I hope you will find why I felt you post put me in a distress sense.

While all you said is correct, don't forget that often the threads where the files resides to download, offer suplimental information in regard to the file you need. You might download the jetpack templates, but in the majority of the cases you don't know where to start, so your best choice is to read the thread for tips and tricks. It's like you have the product but no instructions at all. I have most of the templates saved on my PC, but if I want to start a build I always check and re-check the parent thread and/or similar threads for extra info and tips. By searching each thread with template contents, you will be more informed and familiarized with all the names and techniques used, trials and errors, and so on...

Until the wiki is updated, this is your only way.

Why not just bookmark the useful bits then? You could just create a "TDH" folder in your favorites and add links to all the things you are interested in. I did that... I had bookmarks for all sorts of threads and a local folder of reference images that I had saved.

You can even bookmark directly to specific replies. For example:
    http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f33/a...66/#post558370

Goes right to your reply that I'm quoting.

I guess maybe I'm not really understanding what you are looking for from the site that isn't already here?

I was originally doing this with an auto log-in. But I asked the question to see if there was a way to do the same in this web site.

Like a couple of my other sites I go to I have a place on my profile or some people call home page. There is guides and instructions on these sites that I can click on and save in my profile as a favorite or something like that. When I want to view it again or refer back to it I am not having to click a form button, click a post, scroll through to the right page or click on a page number, and then open it. All I haft to do is log in (normal) all ready on my profile then click on what i need to refer to and I'm there.

I have looked some more to see if there is something like that here but I am still not for sure.

    LOL!

That would be nice but unachievable. The leg work will always be there no matter what your doing. But always a cool Ideal!

Exactly if there was a way to isolate that post just to click it then your there it would be a great way of organizing what your looking for or what works for you. The Post alone are worth there weight in gold just for the experience and the knowledge people put in to them. Always watching to see what is new and if any thing gets added.

I still do not understand the Wiki :-/ ???

Also putting the templates on my PC i was thinking of doing that but if there ever updated and I am not aware of it being updated I would not be up to date !! HEHE !!

I just like to up to date in the stuff I am doing so being linked to it seems to be the best.

It still sounds like your browser bookmarks are perfect for that.

At least I get what you're asking now... some sort of user portal where you can save favorites. There isn't anything like that here, and I have no idea what would be involved in adding it. I haven't done any tech work on here in quite a while.

I took a look at the wiki. It seems like the last migration to another tool broke it pretty badly, and it's now of no particular use.

BTW: Sorry if I sound terse in my replies. It's not intentional... I just don't like to use extra words. If I can say something quickly and simply I do, even if it sounds unfriendly.

Thanks stormtrooperguy If you have worked on the code of this site or construction of it you would know best. Thanks again

Watching your mold and casting I done allot of casting with different materials. Mostly metal casting but plastic skulls have been my go to for the odds and ends at times.

Ill have to figure something out to work best for me I guess.

    Thanks again

The site gets updated a lot... it's been probably 2 years since I've actively worked on anything here, but I'm pretty sure that it would have been widely advertised if there was a portal thing.

Just curious: Is there a reason you are adverse to bookmarking things on your own computer?

Personally I use Google Chrome as my browser and have bookmark sync turned on. Any computer I use has all my links.

No, no reason i just go through computers fast (over clocking) and tend to store all information I can for reference if i ever use it again or if someone else needs it i have it. 2TB computer right now and only have about 350GB of free space left.

I am looking in to a personal storage device to be able to access at random but need to back up the back up if i go through with it all. Cost is allot since I am looking at a 10 TB storage device.

When I research I gather all in formation that I can pics templates files and anything else involving to what I am doing. Allot of the sites I am with have been around for a very long time so i know there not going anywhere. But others have came and gone and there was a time I did not save anything and lost valuable information but now I do it all the time. Even if i do not use it right away i will have it for future use.

Storage online is easy and simple, code seems to be the best way just having the site be the storage device means an easy way of accessing something because it all ready there. I have been told I am an information hoarder. But every thing i have I have either given it to some one that needed it or used it my self. I love building stuff being furniture, buildings, toys, machines, vehicles, puzzles, clocks, costumes, tools, websites, tech, steam punk, or any thing else you can build.

I'll look in to Google chrome but last time I had it i got a popup virus that i had to clear my main HDD and I was glad I partition my storage from the main. could of lost allot of good stuff. That is why I like having resources on line to be able to access anytime.

When the world wide web goes down I just might be safe (NAAAA!)
