id cut it where the rear plate is, similarly as stated above, and then I would extend the remaining portion down an inch so that the rear can 'fasten to it (technically over it).

If it were me, I would break it into two pieces, and add a lip as shown in orange. Then after putting the mask on.I would slide the back around.

You couls use velcro, tabs, even earth magnets.

you can get them on the internet or at hobby stores, they REALLY stick together TIGHT. Or you could break open an old hard drive thats junk, it has one of the strongest magnets ive ever seen in them:)
