Before I start airbrushing the colors, I ALWAYS seal the Dull Aluminum with Kryoln "Crystal Clear" Gloss
This helps stop the peeling between colors & protects the silver if I do actual damage later on.

I started to mask the left gauntlet
I used Mustard because my Masking fluid had turned on me (see pic)
I wouldn't advise using it on lighter colors cuz it does stain
but, with the gauntlets it'll be ok
TIP: Don't let your masking fluid sit unsealed for months at a time
here's some pics

After struggling with my airbrush for about 45 minutes (It sat dirty for about 6 months (n))
I applied the Floquil "Wisconsin Central Maroon" with the cursed airbrush
I know that it is debated about this color & that the "Experts" claim the gauntlets are Floquil "Boxcar" instead.
I have tried "Boxcar" before & don't like it, it seems too brown
So...
I use the "Wisc Central Maroon"
However, my local Hobby shop only carries it in Gloss, so I have to clear coat it with DullCote afterwards
It's ok, it helps seal the color
TIP: Use a clear coat over your silver paint, sometimes other colors won't stick to silver
here are a few preliminary shots to show the glossiness
I will post more pics after the dullcote & masking removal with the same angles as the earlier pics

Pretty Cool!!!! I'm looking forward to seeing how this all turns out!!!! Being that I'm a Newbie, and painting techniques are more advanced than I'm used to with my R2D2. I need to know how to use an airbrush first!!! LOL
Great lloking Marroon too!!!

I removed the Mustard mask today
TIP: Use warm soapy water & a sponge with a Scotch-Brite pad to remove Mustard
Be gentle when working with the Scotch-Brite pad & Take your time

Here's the pics, 1 has the missile & keypad on it temporarily

here's a quick compare to the MOM pics
I'm not matching all the scratches exactly (that's insane)
I'm just trying to get the "feel" of the scratches

Sorry for the delays, been busy helping friends

I masked The right gauntlet the same way as the left(forgot to take pics of the masking)
I then sprayed it with the same "Wisc Central Maroon" as the left
Using the same method to remove the Mustard (warm water & a sponge) as I did before
I know it looks too shint, but I haven't applied the Dull Coat yet

While I was waiting for paint to dry on the right gauntlet, I started on the Missile
I taped off the missile that i didn't want Gold
I used rattle-can Wal-Mart "Colorplace" Brand "Gold" for the tip

darkoneproject 028.JPG

Once the Gold had dried, I taped off the Missile again to paint the black parts
I use cheap "Apple Barrel" black Acrylic from the craft section at Wal-Mart for this
I use the Acrylic so I can achieve the chipped & scratched effect easier
Just paint on the Black with a brush

darkoneproject 029.JPG

After the Black dries in the sun for a couple minutes

I take the Missile over to the sink & use the same sponge with the Scotch-Brite pad on it to start scratching
GO VERY LIGHTLY WITH THE SCOTCH-BRITE PAD
after I get the amount of scratches I like, I then use masking tape for the chips
Take small pieces of tape & apply it to areas you want chipped
Then rub the tape in very small spots
Jerk the tape off quickly & it will leave "chips" in the paint
TIP: Use masking tape to make "chips" in acrylic paint.

I Sprayed the left gauntlet with "Krylon Matte finish" in a rattle-can
This takes off some of the shine
It's hard to see in the pic, but it obvious in person

darkoneproject 044.JPG

Thanx for the compliments
i do appreciate them
I painted the keypad & flamethrower buttons today
I used Cheap Acrylic craft paint from Wal-Mart (97 cent kind)
I used the same paint to do the Black Rectangle on the right gauntlet

The Calc pad buttons are painted with a small brush (little1/4 oz enamel bottles )
Testors "Red" #1103 for the red ones (duh)
Testors "Sea Blue" #1172 for the Blue ones
(some people say black, I go with Blue)

darkoneproject 055.JPG

I finished the gauntlets off by misting them with Floquil "Grimey Black"
TIP: Start misting far away & move in to add the right amount of paint

I took a bunch of pics inside with flash & outside without flash.
The flash makes them look different than they do in person
see?
