Very cool, you did a great job on this.
So? Where can I sign to get one?
That's a beautiful piece of art!
Looks Fantastic Russ Great Work as allways
I'm working on a bust that I will be molding and I plan to put a seam up the back, similar to what you have done. I have never done this with a large mold before though, and I wonder about the possibility of it tearing all the way around when I try to de-mold. Is this a potential problem with your mold? Does it naturally resist that kind of tearing, or is there a fail safe to prevent it?
Molds complete, first parts pulled! The parts come out near perfect, with little to no clean up. Only minor seam line sanding required on the horns. Head is fiberglass with shell-shock as the print coat, horns are smooth cast-roto. I'll be doing a run so any takers please PM me. Kit is head and horns only for now. Price $350 plus shipping. I may offer the neck and mounting system later as well as completely finished out piece. Thanks for all the comments!

That is absolutely gorgeous !
You've got skillz brother :thumbup
You know, as absurd as it may seem - I never realized the Taun Taun had two sets of nostrils
The is simply beautiful! Outstanding work as always Russ! :thumbup
I think I will need one of those, it's just amazing work!
That is an amazing piece of work. I'm interested to see it after you put fur on it.
Hope you manage to sell a few to finance the mold-making process.
What can I say... I'm drooling! You've got an amazing talent.
I have to echo what everyone else said...simply amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to see what one looks like all finnished up & hanging on a wall!!!!!!!
amazing work i can't wait to see it all finished, i would love to have the room to do work like this dam flats just to small.
I've been watching this thread, like many others. And I have to say that is one amazing Tauntaun head you've got there! The amount of detail just leave me spechless.
And yes I can't wait to see it with fur also
.... wish I could afford one for my self
just to add to the motivation and others have said, my wife who is quite happy with my sw collections, vader and tk suits in the loungeroom on mannikins now as i cant troop walked past and looked said isnt that the head of the smelly things on the ice planet that harrison ford was riding? Keep in mind shes more into xfiles and stargate, but she remembered and knew exactly what it was.
Great work on that skin texture dude, Im continually amazed at the level of quality work being done here.
No more lurking for me! Its motivating me!
WOW! That's amazing. I wish I had that kind of sculpting talent.
When will we see the first totally painted and fixed completed head? I can't wait to see it!
WOW!!!! What does a Tauntaun eat? That one looks so real you need to feed it.
Been wanting to finish it out, but I sold the first kit(thanks very much to the buyer), which is a good thing, but this means I have to make another for myself. Got the horns cast over the weekend. I'm still chosing the fur. Got some samples, but I'm not really satisfied with them. Anyone got more suggestions?, Hoping to keep costs down, but I want the best. I think the right fur will really set the piece off.
Are you, by any chance, selling copies of this?
I finally got my kit put together, complete with a one off neck and custom mounting system that allows for total range of position for the head. I'll start painting it today, still looking for the right fur. Post pics when I have something nice to show.
Well I got some paint on my taun taun(please ignore the eyes for now, they're just paint tape for position and size). I'm liking it so far and I think I found some fur that will work.
Can't wait to see some fur!!!! The skin paint job looks great!
WOW. This looks freakin fantastic man! Will you offer a finished version ready to hang? I would love to see this hanging beside my Fett as a trophy. You da man!
Wow, you've got most amazing skills I ever seen =)
Wow, really, wow. That is some truly amazing work, it really is. I can't wait to see what else you do with it.
I reckon this would look truly awesome at a con. We made some back drops and now building a gun rack for our MG34's and T21's and I'm thinking a mounted Taun taun head would look great!
I got the fur halfway done, it's lookin good! I came up with an even lighter and easier head mount and neck system. I'll be posting pics of that and the completed kit soon. It is big however with the neck, to big really for my small art room, been getting grumblings from the wife on my suggestions on other mounting locations, i.e. the living room or the bedroom. oh well, I'll find a good spot for him!
Any plans to make copies of the tauntaun? Would there be two versions, with and without fur? And what would be the price for one?
Questions over questions ... *lol*
Very curious I am (Yoda´s voice)
PS: Great talent you have to scratch build this fantastic head!
Here's how it looks so far, still will tweek the fur with some trimming and airbrushing. Will add eyelashes and wiskers as well. post more pics soon.
More pics, size comparison.
Absolutely amazing great work!!!!!!
Art finish complete and he is mounted on the wall. For now he is temporarily in the living room. My wife heard me drilling and got up to see what I was doing....but it was already to late, she walked in to find this huge beast in the living room. I doubt this will be his permanent home judging by her reaction. However she is a good sport and supports all my projects!
Totally Awesome!! I'd leave it right where it is. Wives come and go, but Star Wars is forever.
JK (Don't tell my wife I said that)
I love this looks amazing, but its missing one thing to tie everything together. Not sure if you mentioned if you were going to do this or not but he needs some fake snow added to the bridge of the nose, about the top of his head and horns
that looks amazing! how much did the fur cost if you dont mind me asking?
Who rides the little bike in your family? I work in the bike industry and if he ever wanted to upgrade let me know maybe we could trade a bike for props.
Wow! Looks bitchin! Great work!
That is so sick! I love it, wow! I've got a lot of work to do to even come close to that skill! Round of applause!
Would have loved to see your Wife's reaction to that beast mounted to the wall...........
Not sure if anyone else has seen one of these babies up close, but I have and it really is incredible. I have one in hand and I can say without hesitation that this tauntaun has officially become my coolest Star Wars item EVER. It really is an awesome thing to behold, I can't wait to get working on the kit I just got. I'm thinking tauntaun Halloween costume!!!
that awesome !!
Incredible job!! I would love to have one mounted on my wall.
Wow! Fantastic, such an original project... atleast to me it is lol nice job!
I am currently working on making the full body of the tauntaun, using those big sheets of foam insulation. And I am making a Hoth costume for myself! Pix to follow.
I really can't say enough good things about the workmanship in this thing, it really is incredible. Love it!
one of the coolest things ive seen
This one is totally awesome man, great work!
That's Awesome! I can't wait to see how it turns out.
Wow, the detail that went into that is amazing.
bump up! this page was just linked to by smooth-on's facebook.
Dude, this is 12 different kinds of epic! Astonishing work!
THis is awsome im suprised i missed it ,
What were the clays you used to sculpt it,
and its way to late now but if you ever cast another there is , a fur like products that gets used in special EFX , its sorta feels like felt fur , you aply an adhesive to the places you want it and sorta dust it on let it dry and brush of the exese and when done right it looks perfect for short, animal coats
Sorry I missed this as well......WOW!
INSANITY I TELL YOU!!!
Unbelievable skill at work here.
