Rorschach Mask Possible?

Hey Kwally, can you post the pic of your prototype that you posted on the RPF. Those of us that aren't members over there cant see the attachment:)

can't wait to see the final product:cheers

It is just a pic of a sewn mask. There is no ink blot on it because it is FREEZING here, and the screen inks don't cure right at cold temps. The new pattern I drew up really eliminates any creases in the fabric and forms to your face perfectly! The fabric is also a 4 way stretch knit that has a nice texture that resembles the movie texture. Here is the mask:

Impressive choice on the fabric. Some who make these masks overlook that. It really needs to be some kind of fabric knit pattern like you're using, not your average shiny spandex, etc. I cannot emphasize how much this is the best looking project for this so far.

The fabric looks great!(y)

yeah the weather's been crazy here in Colorado. It keeps switching between sunny t-shirt weather to blizzards.

If you buy a couple yards of some gauze like material you can see through you can sew it into a long tube that just fits around your head, and roll it up in the fedora. Airbrush the ink blot "sets" every eight inches or so, and when you want to change, just pull down some fabric and tuck the rest in your collar. At a party, it will look like the mask changes randomly through many patterns.

Liquid Crystal Resources just sent me a 100ml sample of "Chromazone Color Change Ink". Previously it was referred to as Lueco Dye 31C but now I see that's not a part number but rather the temp it's affected at. ( 31 celsius )

I will post the info here only as a reference for those who want to try this on their own but must first give the warning that procuring this ink does not mean you made a Rorschach mask. There is a lot more setup and planning that goes into this. I still maintain that if you really want one just buy what Kwally is making. I'm making my own and even I admit it will end in tragedy and will end up buying one of Kwally's when avail.

Perhaps the real reasons I'm putting this up is because:
1) I'm lousy with remembering stuff
2) Many of you may find a need for this chemical that goes beyond this specific project, and will wish that someone posted it for later use
3) We're here to share

Also, this stuff tastes HORRIBLE although it does go good on a salad. I don't feel so well....

Great info to get out there for people. I would suggest that people just don't start sending tons of emails requesting samples. I have talked with Scott on many occasions, and he DOES know all about the youtube mask. He is a bit weary of sending out tons of samples.

Have you had a chance to try the ink out?

Apologies for not clarifying. This is a source people can BUY it from. Please do not bug the man about FREE samples. It's not too expensive to purchase for prop builders in our league.

Test it? Ergh. I pulled a 16-hour shift yesterday and then grabbed 4 hours sleep before making back here at 6am. The only testing I did was to dip a corner of linen in it, confirm that it is indeed Thermo dye and that's about it.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone checked a MSDS on the thermochromic paint being used? Naturally, I'm SUPER interested in acquiring one of these masks but I'm a wee bit cautious when it comes to having unusual paints anywhere near my respiratory system, cured or not.

Yep, the ink I am using has been federally tested and found to have no toxicity.

I will open the order thread/start taking orders as soon as I get my new ink in. I had to purchase a new ink with a bit more stretch so it doesn't crack when the lycra stretches. Thanks guys!

Have a chance to mess with Scott's sample? I received a sample from him also, but I didn't like it very much. The company I have decided to go with gives a much better effect and doesn't cure so rock solid. Let me know what you have found.

Its great to hear that you will be taking orders soon. I look forward to it, and hopefully will be able to get on the first order list. (y)
