Primer

I am about to primer my jet pack but the primer I bought was Rustoleum Automotive primer. I used this on a few other item and it seems "thick". Should I use this or get a different type of primer?

I try to but it comes out with little bumps that all need to be sanded off. It is not smooth like regular paint. I am going to use the primer, then Silver then the colors of ROTJ so the metal color will be under the colors when I weather it.

I'd put that can down and go buy a new one or just use the Rustoleum "sandable primer" I think that's a name they have. Guys?

Automotive primer tends to be thick and gritty because it is used to fill in the imperfectiones left in the surfaces of the area being primed, it's ment to be sanded after being applied in a # of coats to produce a VERY smooth surface.

For a finer spray place the can in a bowl of hot water for ten minutes before spraying. The heat causes the paint to come out much finer.

smoothest stuff i have found is the cheap stuff from walmart, i use it for everything non automotive

If you are using sandable primer, remember that it is probably 40% talc, thats why is is bumpy, just build up the coats then sand the top of it off, its a waste of time and paper to sand in between coats on the primer

If you are doing a nice fiberglass helmet or FG armor i would recommened a sandable primer sanded smooth then use some autommotive epoxy primer as a sealer.

the outside temp should be pretty hot as well for this method
