My Iron Man MKIII suit: UPDATED PICS 8th March 09

I posted a few pics of this in someone else's thread, but I thought I'd start my own now that I can.

You can see all my progress to date here, although some of the parts I've sculpted but not yet cast may need revisiting (the arms): http://www.xrobots.co.uk/Iron Mancostume/

It's all sculpted in Klean Klay and cast in Aqua Resin, it's not 100% movie accurate, but I have more fun without worrying too much about that ;-)

My current work is on the legs. I'm using one sculpt to make both legs, which when made in Aqua Resin will then have their upper contours cut differently, and the outer thigh part will be made separately and stuck onto each to make the left and right leg. Here's the leg sculpt which is pretty final:

And the chest plate, more on that at the link above:

Coolness indeed. Custom versions are just as cool as movie versions. The comics have had what, like 20 different suits he built, all just called Iron Man.

Here are a few updated pictures on this as I've now made the back of the torso. The ruler pictured there is 30cm/12":

Here are the other parts with the torso front and back propped together:

Re: My Iron Man MKIII suit: UPDATED PICS 11th Jan 09

Thanks for your feedback guys, I don't really think I'm a master prop builder or anything, so it's all just for fun really. Here's a short update on the progress:

Lower leg mould and support jacket, I still have to pull the upper leg mould off, and of course cast the pieces. As you can see, the cloth layers in the latex mould help it hold it's shape well, even without support:

I've also started to fill, prime, sand and fill etc etc the back of the torso, a couple of minor bits to take care of yet:

There are are a few other pics at http://www.xrobots.co.uk/Iron Mancostume/ , and more coming soon.

Are you going ot do an indepth tutorial about the helmet, or the suit in general? It looks like a incredible project, and I was going to try a Iron Man helmet for myself but didn't really know where to start.

I did this for the helmet:

...which I guess is quite in depth, the armour is made in the same way:

Would you recommend your latex/ and blue kitchen cloth technique for other mask making? It seems a viable option for Niteowl 2's mask from the new Watchman adaptation.

Re: My Iron Man MKIII suit: UPDATED PICS 18th Jan 09

Yes, I'd say it's worth trying layers of cloth in with the latex, because it certainly helps keep it more rigid. On the outer layers of the leg mould I used an even thicker kitchen dish cloth which has really made the moulds hold their shape even without the support jacket. They've come out quite thick though, which is good for moulds, but maybe the technique will need testing for a mask / prop etc

I'm currently re-sculpting my Bat-cowl which I will use as an experiment for your technique. We will see if it works, probably will, but I'll let you know if it does, or doesn't.

Here's today's update, I have the shoulder bells to attach to the straps you can see dangling there, at which point I'll post some pics of me wearing all the parts so far.

I've used Maplex board covered with black cloth ( http://www.mutr.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1422 ) to make flexible tabs attached to the back piece which have press-studs attached to them so the two halves of the torso clip together rigidly. I've padded some of it out with foam so it stands away from the body a a bit:

    More coming this week...

Here's today's update. I've attached the shoulder bells, and as you can see the whole thing is quite a bit wider than I am - so my arms will have to go into the bicep pieces at an angle. I have a bit more foam to add to the front of the torso so it sits forward further over the shoulders, but here are all the finished pieces so far:

Thanks all, here are a couple of shots I took today in daylight - and I've done some refitting so the torso sits further forward and slightly higher.

I also found it was much easier to take the photos while I'm not wearing it ;-) There are a few more at: http://www.xrobots.co.uk/Iron Mancostume/

Thanks guys. Here's today's update of the raw castings of the legs. They are both made from Jesmonite, as all the parts will now be, with glass fibre surface tissue and chopped strand mat laid up.

I'll be cutting them about at the top so they are lower in the middle and fit underneath the pelvis part which will be made next:

Not too much - check on eBay, in the UK about £5 for a litre bottle which was what is pictured.

Re: My Iron Man MKIII suit: UPDATED PICS 5th Feb 09

Here's the latest update on this project. After a very long time sanding and filling (and they still aren't perfect), I've sorted out the legs which were previously pictured as raw casts:

    Primer going on:

And the paint... I still have to lacquer the thighs so there will be some more pictures coming of all the pieces together etc:

...all the pieces are made of Jesmonite and standard glass fibre mat & surface tissue, which is now my permanent plan for the remaining pieces. Don't forget this month's 50%-off Jesmonite offer if you fancy trying it: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showthread.php?t=31190

I made up this strapping system to support the legs and also to attach lower torso/pelvis parts to:

Here's the pelvis in progress... I made this from thick card and it'll be reinforced with Jesmonite/fibreglass mat - it was the easiest way to make it and check it fits both me and the other pieces as I was going:

    More coming soon...

quick question, whats your plan for the jointing at the knees? just an open space on the back with a cap over the knee to "close" it up? and are you going to be putting a casting around an existing pair of shoes to make a permenant boot structure or are you going to make it mountable on any shoes you happen to be wearing?(just curious im in the process of designing my own IM suit so seeing your progress has been really helpful)

also how did you make that LCD lens to cover the eyes? i can tell the basic construction but i wouldnt figure you would have very good visability through it
