masking problem

I've got a problem, If I mask an area with masking tape and remove the tape afterwards the tape removes some of the paint underneath. What can I do about it. should I varnish the coat underneath first or is there another thing i can do.

try painters tape...I have never had problems with it...it is the blue tape you find in the paint sections at hardware stores....I believe the sticky side is formulated with a less adhesive glue to insure that it does not take off paint.

What kind of tape are you using? I hate to state the obvious, but are you using "masking tape"? Also, are you leaving the previous coat long enough to fully dry before masking it out?

you aren't stating the obvious Berkal, it's a good point your making. but yes I'm using "masking tape". The paper tape specially designed for painting. I think its the same as SandySith is talking about but a different color (its white in the Netherlands, Good point SandySith). I let the paint dry for about 24 hours but I should probably wait longer till I mask for the next layer. I'm probably going to fast with my painting, It's just so much fun painting and I'm probably to anxious to see the end result.

Any masking tips?

What kinds of paint are we talking here whats under the paint thats peeling off?

We're talking about spray-paint for plastics and metal on base-coat of primer for plastics and metals. I'm probably going to fast, painting in the evening and masking the afternoon the next day. I'm going to take it slow from now on. Painted yesterday evening, masking for the next layer tomorrow.

You can also stick the tape to the shirt you're wearing and then mask it on the bucket. It should pick up a few fuzzies and dust ect from your shirt, enough to reduce the adhesion of the tape but not too much to prevent it from masking effectively. Do a few test runs with that for sure before you use it on your paint-up though, if you chose to use this method

The blue tape is better than the white. See if you can find the blue one. It's a bit more expensive, but it works.

The brand is 3M, "Scotch blue":

i usually paint fast... masking within a few hours of the base paint.

a few things to try.

when you do your primer. let it dry, then wipe it down with a soft cloth. sometimes i find a dusty coating of paint-particles on the surface. not paint really, but more like paint colored dust. that will keep the paint from sticking.

the other is the tape. here at least the white painters tape is terrible... it's WAY too stick.

there are a variety of grades of tape. i always use the blue "delicate surfaces" stuff (even within blue there are grades -- i get the least tacky). i've used that on paint that's barely dry to the touch and its been fine.

Thanks to all, I'll be looking for the blue tape. I know i've seen some in the hardware store.
