Also, If you do have more info on the pattern and the type of iron on paper used I would be interested.

Sin...EXCELLENT, my fellow Clown Prince of Crime! You are to be commended, my friend, on such quality work! Good call on the button-type braces...no clip-ons for our Jokers!

Also, equally great work on the vest back...good call on the fabric!

And yes...could you please share the secret of your suspender success with us other clowns? The type of stretchable iron on paper you used, and where you got the braces?

I know that some would rather I post this on a different thread, but the truth is... This is the only thread I pay attention to. Other than the shirt, most of my costume is either finished or in the works. So, checking out and posting on other threads is really of little use to me. Sorry.

However, I hope that I make up for my indiscretions by posting very helpful and relevant Joker related costuming ideas that help anyone that may be in need...

I am grateful for all the help that I have gotten on the shirt for this costume and in return I hope that I can help anyone here on any other areas of the outfit that I have finished...

All of that aside, I would like to answer a few questions about my suspenders (braces)...

The original set was bought from a local Men's Warehouse. They are a light silver/grey to begin with and 100% silk.

Unfortunately, I do not have the budget necessary to get these embroidered with the green diamond pattern like the real deal. Maybe in the future...

Anyway, I fashioned the pattern myself using the few screen shots that exist.
I do not have "vectoring" experience like Seriana, but I know a little bit about Photoshop. I used the program to color match the green diamond pattern from the screen shots.

Once the pattern was finished. I made a side by side 5-up on an 8.5x11 sheet that could later be printed onto the iron-ons.

I used Tailor brand "Soft 'n Stretchy" iron-ons.

It is a little bit of a pain to make sure they are lined up from one iron-on to the next, but as you can see it is well worth the effort.

I do not plan to make these for sale. Sorry, but that just isn't who I am. I like helping others to make their own. I guess that is the teacher in me...

I cannot post the file I made, for fear it will just get ripped off. I hate when people do that.

However, I am always happy to answer any questions that may be useful...

I love my hobby and those that share my enthusiasm.

Sin...you're a man after my own heart, and I agree with everything you said..your points were well-put, honest and succinct.

Like yourself, I prefer to do it myself; the insight into your methods and ideas are the only incentive I need to accomplish my own endeavors.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

BTW...I did a Google search for the Tailor brand "Soft 'n Stretchy" iron-ons, but turned up zip...does your package have a website link?

i agree, and with that thought in mind, can somebody gimme some help on dyes?

basically these pants are a mother effer to find, so i guess am gonna dye some. never done it befroe so i'm clueless.

so, if i were to buy blue oants i'd use... red dye? now if the pants were dark or light blue, would that impede on what colour/shade of red i should use?

then the actual practice of dying them, do you just put them in a bucket (i'm assuming the dye would come with instructions for this though) and i'm guessing you add water?

take it washing them is a bit difficult

    so many questions!!!! sorry!

Yeah Galmando I heard darker the blue the less red you'll need or something like that. AZspidey on the hype board came out with something nice and he had a 6 rit purple dyes to 1 blue on grey pinstripe pants. I hear the blue pinstripes come out even nicer with red. Sorry I can't help I haven't done it myself yet. Anyways what do people think of these pants as a starting point? 50 bucks, I'd be afraid to dye but I like the style.

Using Purple Rit Dye for 24 hours, then Royal Blue Rit Dye for 30 minutes, I was able to get the right shade. Use seperate dye buckets. After each dye, I rinsed and dried the pants before moving on. This week, I will be taking off the belt loops and adding suspender (braces) buttons to the inside of the waist for my suspenders...

when dying the pants, should they be laid out flat and also, very important question, is wool the best to dye with? if the pants were polyester and viscose, would that matter? (and do you throw the whole bottle of dye in the bucket?)

thanks sinister, and thanks brodee for the advice!

Galmando the rit dye site has a tutorial area. Lots of good info..as far as I know most people put all the dye in then 'stir' the pants for 30 minutes or so, or some just leave it soaking for 24 hours. Don't know what turns out better..I'll be trying something soon though myself!.

BTW The polyster is hard to dye..Heard some horror stories, I think it can only be 50% poly?

The stripes seem to be too close together...the Joker's pants have a wider-spaced stripe pattern....

You have to stir them, or the dye will "set" in the creases, and you'll get dark streaks of color in the fabric . Add about a cup of table salt to the dye mixture to help "set" the color, and make it more vibrant. You need to make sure the water is HOT when you do it; I typically do it in my bouble-bowl kitchen sink (the wife hates it!), and I use a big, 3-gallon pot of boiling water added to the hot tap water already in the sink (be careful!). Be sure to wet the fabric first with cool water, before putting it in the hot dye...then, stir it continously, on and off, for 30 minutes. To see if you are getting the color you want, take a small section of the leg and wash it with clean tap water in the other sink bowl; the fabric in the concentrated dye bath may look like the color you want, but a lot of it will wash out when you are rinsing it. Once you get what you want, completely rinse the pants in clean, warm water, until you get very little dye residue being washed out...then, depending on the fabric, either line-dry (wool) or use the electric dryer....

True. The poly will not take regular RIT dye; there is some talk of a dye that can be used on poly, but I don't wear poly, so I've never used it...I only use cotton or wool on my costumes, especially if I know the piece is going to be dyed...

    Hope this helps.

Re: Joker Hexagon Fabric Print Interest

I sent this to a couple of others here on the thread about my pants, so here it is for all...

The dye process I used for my pants...

The dye ratio is pretty simple. I used a five gallon bucket. Using hot water I fill the bucket about three gallons full. Add 1/2 cup of table salt to the mix. Add one packet of Rit Dye or one bottle of the Rit Liquid.

Be sure to wet the material with hot water before soaking in the dye.

Stir the material in the dye for about 30 minutes and then make sure they are fully submerged for the time needed for each color.

I used the purple first, for about 24 hours.
Then rinsed them in a water solution with one cup of white vinegar.
Let them air dry before putting them in your dryer.

After that, mix up a new batch of dye using the royal blue. All the same quantities form above.

Repeat the process, but only stir the material in this mix for about 1/2 hour. Then repeat the rinse and dry process.

I highly recommend 100% cotton or 100% wool. NO POLY AT ALL!!!

Also... TEST SCRAP! TEST SCRAP! TEST SCRAP!

    Best of luck!!!

Anyone have a heads up on the order thread???

I used a 2/3 poly blend. Worked pretty well, but I went with a cup of salt and a little detergent in my dye mix. I let it dye for 24hours (Same method as Sinister with 5gallon bucket only I warmed up the 3 gallons of water on a stove top to just over 200 (I'm used to that heat you should not go over 150 or so if you are not) with mu dye mix being two packets of purple the cup of salt and about a tablespoon of liquid detergent 4 cups of hot water in a gallon plastic water container. Make sure all the dye and a decent portion of the salt is dessolved (wont dissove all the salt Just so get all of it you can out of the water jug) I then checked it and stirred it every 8 hours or so. If you do use pants like mine. Do not re-dye with the royal blue otherwise you will end up with a real dark blue pair of pants it wont meld with the purple like it does in the cotton and wool. Is the ORDER THREAD UP? if so could someone PM me the link. THanks and Thanks again Sinister for posting your progress on here I Know its helped me a ton. Suspenders I really would love to start tackling now myself I come up with something that works well I'll post it.

Re: Joker Hexagon Fabric Print Interest

At first i would love to say that this thread has been my new addiction for about the last week or so and man you guys have all helped!! I feel so much better that there are others out there are as obsessed with this character as i am. I did a Jack Sparrow a while back and that just created a desire to be more and more perfect with my costumes for Halloween and event I even got paid for to walk around the movies when they had the third installment come out for pirates at worlds end. My profile pic should show you my costume for it.

well thats enough about my background, what i really needed to ask about the costume is that i have noticed a lot of talk about the pants and coat and shirt, which is what this entire thread is made for i understand that, but on a different concern about the costume is, i seem to be stuck on the hair. How in the hell is that even possible if i dont have a receding hairline? yeah yeah yeah i can grow my hair out but the problem is is that i have two months, and my hair is short... So, its one thing to find a wavy wig and use that cheap hair spray to color it, which looks like what they did for his hair, but its another thing to have the hair look right. And im sorry but the wigs that are for sale that claim to be the joker wigs are to green or just plain awful. So would anyone have an idea of how to go about putting on a wig for this?

i wont be totally useless here, so my two pennies of this issue is that i get a good wig that looks close, whether i have to have it cut to look right or not i don't care. Thats solution one fixed. The next is the hairline. do i put it on with either a shaved head or some type of cap under it which will work/ look like im just bald. then place the wig on top of it and use the makeup to hid the cap line around my forehead? thats all i can think of...

extensions man!! that should do it! personally i'm gonna dye my hair blonde then spray on green a little bit and then finger it through. i'm not going to dye all of my hair green as clearly this joker doesnt do that

    hopefully it'll look right...

We had the wig come up a page or two back and I know someone posted a link to someone selling a human hair wig that should be great bet if you are not worryed about putting extra money into the costume. I have the rubies wig and a synthetic wig I bought from HK and both are not worth dealing with. The rubies wig done right makes you look more like one of the lame dark knight toys. the Synthetic wig I have is really itchy and way too thick layering to be easy managed. Anyone Know what about the extensions may cost?

    HOLA!

It is a wonderful day! (McCain - Palin '08!)

I completely trust Kwally here, I'm willing to bet he is moving things along faster than we expect, and if not, then he is probably very busy. We will get the fabric soon enough, I believe. MY biggest worry is how quickly I can tailor a shirt!

don't worry guys!!! I working with my fabric guy to get a swatch made then I can authorize production on the large scale. Next time I speak with him, I am going to emphasize the Halloween deadline. I'm hoping to get this out to you with at least 2 weeks before Halloween. It took considerably longer than I expected to get the vector done. With that being said, sereiana did a great job!!! I will take orders soon... Just bare with me!! I'm trying to get the best quality fabric at the cheapest price because the fabric price is separate from the printing costs!!! I'll update soon!! Happy labor day weekend whooo!!!

Yeah - I appologize for the time taken - but it honestly DID take up ALL of the time that I wasnt working. I did it for hours at a time until just couldnt take anymore that day
I Don't know if kwally opened the thing on his cpu - but the vector is generates so much lag on the system its impressive XD

If I never see another hexagon pattern again it will be too soon.

I, or we all, seriously do appreciate you guy's labors to bring this stuff to us. I can't wait to see it all!

But ya, sewing a shirt in 2 weeks time? Start the music. "Dun Dun Dun Dun Dunda-Du! Dunda-Du! Dunda! Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dunda-Da, Dunda-da, Dunda!"

I think it's time I start getting prices for tailors to put together this shirt. What seems to be an average price? Just so I know what to expect.

If anyone is having a hard time with the pants, I have contacted a costuming shop that boasts they can find 'any fabric' so I have asked about purple fabric with white pinstripes. When i hear back from them, I will let you guys know. I'm too lazy to dye pants plus I want complete accuracy.

Around here, it's between 50 and 80 bucks to have one tailor-made...

nice! Definitely interested in that also. I've been to every consignment shop and store that might carry dress pants in a 40 mile radius only to come up empty handed for anything close to accurate in a grey to dye. Having to forgo the dying process would make things that much easier. Though putting them together is another ordeal. Maybe I can get a deal for the shirt and pants

I know I'm joining the party REALLY late, but I'd love to get in on the fabric order!

Also, generalFROSTY, let us know what you find out about the pants!

I've got my tie, and a lot of patterns and ambition. We'll see if I pull it all together by Halloween.

okay guys, i NEED YOU!!!! especially you Sinister

how easy would it be to alter this coat...

    to look like the jokers?

surely that collar can be trimmed to match it and then have stitch lines to give the impression it were mad that way?

i've NEVER done anything like this before and wouldnt want to buy it and cock it up!

also, popping the buttons onto the fellas side aint a big job is it?

the coat is really thick so has that 'heavy' look that Heaths does

thought and tips?!!! where do i begin?!!

(i will ask if she comes with it...)

I hate to burst a bubble, but I would start somewhere other than this coat. It is nice, but it would be harder to make it look right than to create one from scratch...

That coat would cost much more and take about the same amount of time to alter as it would to make your own. Anyone have a pattern thats close to this Hex shirt. Just a basic pattern. I want to try and make a couple of test shirts on My new sewing machine before I get this fabric. Thanks

I agree with these guys. It would be just as easy to find a purple fleece like material, or white and dye it, and make the coat from scratch. I am by no means a "tailor," but I have made a couple of coats before and it really isn't that bad. You just have to have a good pattern to follow. Just my 2 cents.

    Kwally,

Please count ME in TOO for the shirt fabric. I have a very nice copy of the pattern I found posted on another site, but have NO idea how to go about ironing it on a shirt!

    Thanks!

    Howdy partners.

Read the thread in one sitting. Have tried many different methods of recreating the shirt. The best method up until now has been iron-on transfer, which obviously leaves much to be desired in terms of texture and comfort; but looks pretty. Very, very interested in the digital printing method. Not necessarily interested in having it for Halloween. Not interested in having a screen-perfect shirt and a half-formed costume. I say, do it right, or don't do it at all.

So Kwally (and multi-thanks again for your tireless effort in getting this up), you can put me down for the post-October order, whenever that might be, for however many yards equals three medium shirts.

Also: for those aiming to grow their hair out for Halloween, be warned -- it may take longer than you realize. About half an inch per month. Which means, based on which part of the movie you're looking at for reference, you should have started in February.

Oh, and do yourself a favor: spend the extra money and get yourself a nice hair stylist that you meet with every three months or so. I don't think I need to tell you that hair doesn't do what Heath's hair did on its own. And everybody's hair grows a little bit differently. Alterations will need to be made periodically. It's those little things that will make you stand apart from the rest!

Many thanks to the holy trinity of Kwally, Pinder and Sereiana. Praise Heathus!

Never saw that one myself until about yesterday. More than confirms that the pattern layout is 100% correct. This would have made my life easier though. I'd say the real winner in this picture is the fact that you can see even better whats going on with the fabric on the back of the vest.

This is fabulous! If you need more people in on it Kwally, I would love 4 yards for my husbands costume. I have been searching for weeks for the perfect fabric and found this thread by accident. Let me know if it's too late or not to get in on it.

Ghostsoldier: Apologies for the offense, but I'm not trying to be critical of anyone here. I don't really make a lot of money; I cut meat in a corporate line of grocery stores. I can certainly relate to money woes. So if your aim is to throw a Halloween outfit on a budget, then more power to you. But for me, Heath's Joker holds a special kind of allure. On the level, his wardrobe seems to be comprised of clothes attainable to anyone; but when you look close you see everything is customized and unique. I want to get as close to that as possible. Because that's what MY preference is. Not because I think it's "better".

'I am a law only for my kind, but am no law for all' and so forth.

That being said, I actually managed to find a cotton vest with lapels recently. It's not a perfect match to Heath's (wrong number of buttons, different pockets), but it is a very reasonable fascimile. Be warned, the price is steep.

    Linkdump: http://www.paulfredrick.com/Catalog/...ategory&Slno=1

God, that's an ugly link. Haha. Anyway, I'm still waiting for it in the mail, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to go about with the alterations? Obviously I would need to separate the material to re-color both halves, but does anyone have a preferred method for doing so? All suggestions are welcome.

None taken, fourcolor......sometimes, at my age, I get a bit testy, if I percieve people to be too judgemental...but, I agree with you 100% about accuracy...it's what I'm striving for, also. I've been search for a week now for the perfect blue and white striped satin lining for the back of the vest; so far, I've only found 1 alternative, and it would have to be dyed, to boot, if it will even work...the swatch is on the way, and I'll soon find out.

    God, this hobby is maddening!

hey sup all, another newbie here... hope all the long timers on this thread arent getting irritated by those of us jumping on the wagon this late in the game after all the hard work is done. if so i apoligize... i just stumbled across this site the other day, started reading, couldnt stop reading, and was totally blown away by the teamwork going into this thing! never seen anything like it on something like this and my hat is off to everyone that made this thing happen; particuraly kwally, pinder and sereiana. haha you guys are my heros!

that said i'd like to get down for 6 yards if possible... i only need 3 yards before halloween though, so if spliting my order up helps some other clown get theirs before fright night im all for it. again, kudos to all for a job SUPERBLY well done!!!

    ok guys!!

The swatch has been sent via fedex as of yesterday the second...after I receive it, I will confirm if it is undeed correct. I will then get the final price, get a confirmed color match, open the order thread, take order plus payment to paypal or certified check, get production rolling (should be 2-3 weeks), I will then cut all fabric to desired lengths and ship... Long process...but...I'm REALLY excited to get this out to you guys!! Keep on the lookout for updated...

Those are made by a company called Albert Thurston, another English upscale menswear company. Who wants to bet they did his suspenders custom, like T&A did the tie?

I would say just use a fine tipped textile marker to outline and then another to fill the diamonds in. Or if you really wanna test yourself Embroider over the diamonds with a sewing machine. They are perfect as is. For my tastes, but otherwise I would just contact them and see about if they would sell them in the green and Grey/silver/aluminum/steel/shadowy misted air Black XP (save the color argument They are all one and the sameish)
Anyone know a Simplicty pattern# for a good enough Dress shirt to get some practice before I get this fabric? dont need the rounded cuff or anything just a good guide for now.

I still prefer the look of Sinister's braces. I really like the leathers color and shine on his. Though the white's attractive this Joker wouldnt bother to have such Pristine looking White anything. (Like I said this Joker. The Dark Knight Returns(Favorite Batman GN) Joker with the White Suit Is a whole different Beast.

Yes, a fabric marker would work quite nicely on the white braces. First you could dye them a light grey and then color the diamonds with the marker. I'm ordering them TODAY!!

Oh…and for price comparative purposes…the white braces will cost you about $40 USD. If you decide to undertake making your own, like Sinister did SO well, you'll have to buy the suspenders (cost???), buy the Tailor iron ons at $12.95 (which you can purchase HERE:http://www.shopatron.com/product/par...002.9492.0.0.0), recreate the pattern in Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc., and then print and iron on the braces.

All said and done…it's probably LESS time and $ to buy the white braces and use a fabric marker to color them.

BTW - I think I did a pretty fair job of recreating the pattern in Photoshop. If anyone wants a copy of the file, message me and I'll email you a JPEG.

Well, with the $21.24 shipping, the white suspenders NOW jump to over $60. Looks like DIY IS the best solution. Now I gotta find some suspenders to print on!!

Yeah...I feel the pain! I recently ordered a couple of band shirts for my son from the UK, which were only 30 bucks, but the 28 dollar shipping really killed me...

Here's where I bought my suspenders...

Gotta dye them grey, then add those wicked diamonds...

think you should use a color remover on them first as grey wont really take on the black..

Nothing costume related, but just a spot of good luck and hopefully helpfull karma I can pass on. I managed to snag the Recalled Joker Movie Masters figure with the Joker card Evidence Off the shelf at the Meijers grocery store in my town. So If you have Meijers in your town and want to buy the figure at Retail (Non Ebay XTReME Mark up and Hype) you might just get lucky. Also Thanks again Ghostsoldier I picked up the Patterns today at JoAnne's also found some fun fabric to test them out with. Funny thing though the Western Themed one was Husky boys and Big N' Tall Mens. So I dont fit that one LOL! I like the Vest pattern in it though So I am going to try and Re-scale it to me. I'll let you know how it turns out.8)

Theres lots more info on various patterns here.
On a bit of food for thought; on the vest the pockets are piped... and they also are piped underneath - its rather unique.
Also I wish everyone the best of luck with coloring an elastic fabric it CAN be hairy.

Great, right after I buy these:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN:IT&ih=022

:o lol, we'll see how the coloring goes. I'll see if I can get them a light grey then try masking them off and using a green fabric paint.

Here's my vest guys. The color is gray, even though the lighting in the second picture gives off a satisfying green tint. The front is a thick wool/cashmere texture and the back is satin.

My plan is to go hunting for a tailor this weekend and have him (or her!) separate the material for me so I can re-color the fabric appropriately. Popping into Goodwill tomorrow to find some nice guinea pig pants for my experimentation.

Re: Joker Hexagon Fabric Print Interest

Oh yes, it is the Singapore Shirt. Sent away for it in the first week of August, just got it yesterday. Wore it out on the town last night. Good times.

It's a lot bluer than Heath's shirt, and only has about four or five different hexes (half of which don't even appear at all in the movie), but it's a good stand-in shirt until the better one arrives...

Almost immediately after I purchased it I located a fairly accurate hex pattern for sale, which led to my eventual experimentation with iron-on transfer. During which, I came upon this thread. That is my story.

This way, I'll have something close to five different shirts, which I can select according to the context of the outing (no need to rough up the Good Stuff, so to speak): the Singapore Shirt, the Iron-on Transfer shirt, and two or three Digital Print Shirts.

I mean, people really don't notice. I had to point out to a couple of admirers who thought I had a perfect replica just how different the pattern is. I plan on using the Good Stuff on special occasions, and the others while in the company of less fanatic moviegoers.
