Iron Man Suit Sculpt WIP Pics UPDATE 1/23/2010 First Pulls

I started to sculpt a helmet, I only have an hour and 15 minutes in to it and I know I am a slow sculptor, but here is the progress so far... Going to make the eyes a lot more narrow with more of a, "kick your tush" look to it, round off the brow a bit more, maybe finish the jaw and the rest of the helmet...

The general shape is coming together pretty well considering the time invested to this point... I think so anyhow...

that is looking sick.......its a shame there isnt a way of seeing it in color as you sulpt. but I guess that tool lies in your mind as you sculpt.

I think you've nailed the brow line with the eys. cheek line is spot on as well IMO

LoL - That's awesome... I was thinking Dr Doom when I took the first one... Thanks for the kind words all - Gonna get the face plate sculpted, then use it as a guide for the rest of the helmet. Should be a fun little project.

Ok here is the good news and the bad news - Good news is here is some updates - the bad news, I have to resculpt it - it fell, the clay shifted, and didn't comp for it, so it's not sitting straight on the face underneath, and there is no way that you'd be ale to see out of it, and it wold take more time to try to fix it, than the couple of hours it took to just sculpt the original... So, You're going to see a new sculpt here in a day or so.

Yup its the same, I started on a second casting last night. It should be done setting up by the time I get home tonight! I'll probably do a run of these after I clean up the casts. I've learned alot about sculpting and casting these past few months. I'ts been a fun journey.

Looking at your pictures the steps from sculpting to casting are long as you probably know, buts its nice to finally see a tangible result after all your work when you have a cast product in your hands.

The eyes look good now, but making them a little bigger would be good for viability.. Unless the helmet is very close to the front of your face its kinda hard to see through.

Wow - thanks everyone!! YEa the eyes should be fine, I'm not going to be flying, but I might put a camera and an LCD in the mask to see I have the technology to make it happen

But in all reality, yea it's gonna be pretty close to my face - I play football so I am used to having a limited eye-sight with my facemask I wear... So now it's just sharpening it and smoothing it, then should have a mold by tonight, pull by tomorrow to make the rest of the helmet

I KNOW HOW YOU WANT TO MAKE THIS IDEA WITH CAMERAS AND LCD SCREEN. I THINK THAT IS EASY. PUT THE CAMERAS IN THE CORNERS OF HELMET EYES OR IN THE MIDDLE AND PLACE THE LCD INTO FACE PLATE AND PUT THE MAGNIFIER ON THE LCD. YES MAN THAT IS GREAT IDEA, VERY NICE PLAN. GOOD LUCK.

Do you want to make a interface like on my avatar or on film? ;]

What kinda LCD are ya gonna use? With the LCD close to your face the pixel resolution may suck big time.. I thought about putting TV glasses on the inside of the helmet hooked up to a webcam and interfaced through a laptop. I thought about this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_LED while not cheap right now.. offers a far better resolution then standard LCD.

Yea, for those of you who don't know, I actually own and run a conceptual design firm. Nothing like smart weapons and what not, but micro AV and Servo design, conceptual product design, athletic medical rehabilitation equipment etc.

We've talked about using OLEDs with a sponsorship from Sony or Samsung. So, could be fun. I'll be posting the pics of the progress - keep your eyes peeled for some nifty stuff here in the future.

I had an idea to do this for a airsoft helmet and mounting a cam on my gun.

So you doing casting the Faceplate first, then the helmet? What are you using to make the mold? Ive been using Urethane rubber, while it takes days to dry the amount of detail it picks up is amazing. My first pull had my thumb print in it from where I had picked up the helmet and didnt resmooth it out.
OLED would be a cool option if it was available to you, it would probably make the helmet more "movie authentic" especially if you put in a face plate kit like this.
    faceplate.jpg
I plan on doing something like this in my War Machine helmet, obviously scaled down because the "ears" are shorter then the Iron Man faceplate.

The sculpt looks great so far, suggestion though.. the face plate under the eyes needs to be a tad smoother.. I know alot of the reference pics I've seen "looks" like there is an edge there but i think its just lighting.. (and even my Iron Man sculpt had it there too, but I ended up taking it out before molding it) Other then that great work, keep it up!

Re: Iron Man Suit Sculpt WIP Pics UPDATE 1/15/2010

Yea, I am using the faceplate the "scale" the rest of the suit. With the eyes, that's one reason I am doing the suit this way. This faceplate is really just a "test" pull so I know where my lighting and wiring, hinges and other servos will nee to be placed per my tech, when he sends it back, I will sculpt the appropriate brackets and what not.

And again with the eyes, that "edge" on the eye, varies from suit to suit oddly enough; from CGI to Hero suit, to close -up -hero suit to animatronic hero close up - it all changes.

If you want an awesome mold rubber, check out the Rebound-25 or the OOMOO Rubber, both from Smooth-On. Both are awesome products, but for bigger projects, I'd recommend the R-25 being the molds are just a tid-bit stronger.

A cheaper alternative is alginate, used by dentists and sfx, picks up enormous amounts of detail and costs between $5 - $12 depending on where you get it. If you get it from a dentist you can probably get it at cost which is cheaper.

Problem with alginate is that it breaks down and eventually crumbles over time. Also, when doing large pieces over the course of time, again, it breaks down and eventually crumbles in your hands. It's also very hard to cast an array of different parts in different materials. My molds can house resins, glass, low-temp meltable metals like pewter, bronze, nickel, even gold and aluminum, you get the idea. If you're looking to just get a quick test piece done, great alternative to use, but for long term use, it can be a pain in the ***...

Re: Iron Man Suit Sculpt WIP Pics UPDATE 1/15/2010

Just a quick update - I pulled these on the 17th and have really been swamped with other work - I am really thinking about switching gears and doing a War Machine suit just because it's a bigger suit, and there are a lot of us who are bigger guys... The pulls aren't sanded or anything just yet, I was toying with some gun metal powder from Alumilite and they work amazingly well - I just wish the pics showed them the justice they deserve... Also in the pic you'll notice the outline for the rest of the helmet... I have to wait for the face plate to come back from my tech before I sculpt the rest of the helmet to accom. for the wiring and servo placement, so this is going to be a big project - be it the Iron Man and/or the War Machine.

But here are the first pulls...

Yes it was kind of a glorified bump so I didn't lose the thread - Just can't work on this until the tech is added :-( So this is on the back burner until I get it back. On the plus though, a 40" Optimus Prime is in the works.
