Iron Man 3d model for Pepakura

I am modeling Iron Man for a Pepakura costume. It is still W.I.P. so there are some things that are not movie accurate, but I hope to get it fixed soon.
I have been having some trouble getting the open edges within the mesh closed up, so if anyone knows how to do this in Milkshape 3d, please let me know.

Here's a progression of what I have done.

    Get the file Here!
First try: no reference pics, jaw is funky and overall shape is off.

    Get the update Here!
Second attempt: Reference pics used, but model is "chunky" lots of bondo needed here.

    Get the update Here!
Third attempt: I basically just cleaned up the second one, now the top/back of the head are much smoother.

The files are .obj and can be opened in Pepakura Designer or any 3d modeling program.

I will be cleaning this up a bit more and adding the indentations in the back, and then moving on to the chest and shoulders.

Give me some criticism, I have been staring at this model too long to know what else I have done wrong.

I have gotten better reference pics and have modeled a new helmet. There are still some tweaks I need to do, such as the notches in the back, but here is what I have:

Please excuse the "lighting", pepakura doesn't give a decent light source.

wow that is looking SUPER nice. I think I'm going to postpone building an Iron Man helmet till you're done with your model

Does anyone have accurate measurements of the helmet? I have only found measurements for a non-wearable model that is not 1:1 scale. I have it scaled to 29.2 cm. in height, and when I did a test build, it came out huge.

Re: Iron Man 3d model for Pepakura

I have gotten some messages from people who think that I "stole" the model fromhttp://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/...t-model/424900. I assure you that this is an original model made by me.
While I did use this model as a reference, I didn't reduce the polys and come up with what I have now. If you think this is the case, download it and reduce it yourself, and see what a mess you come up with. My model was mostly based on the pre-production sculpt pictures that were found on the web. Here is my model superimposed over the model in question.

I know the bad rep that recasters have, and I don't want this to happen to me, but If anyone has issues with the similarities of the two models, please talk to me about it, I have the saved files of my work in progress. I can prove how the mesh was put together.
    END RANT

I am doing a test build to see if I need to change anything. For instance, someone pointed out that the back of the jaw is a little too wide, but I am not sure if that is from the render or not. As soon as I have worked out any problems that come up, I will publish the model.

Looks good bro, though I wouldn't have done the ear parts like that. Bands would have been better to build than sections like that.

    Just my thought.

I agree, I was trying to get it into the least amount of pages, but I've fixed it. The way I had the face section was difficult to build as well.

I also found the problem making the jaw look too wide. There is an area on the cheeks that is sunk in slightly. So, I'm going to have to fix that before I release the file.

So whenever one of you finish it, please post up a finished pic of the pepped model, because I'd love to see what it looks like pepped. If I think it looks good, I might be interested in getting it

here's what I have so far, I haven't done the ears or neck yet, so its still kind of flimsy and the parts are just held together with paperclips.

EDIT: I have added struts to keep the shape while fiberglassing, and I have fixed the area between the eyes.

I would be willing to trade, pm me with something to offer.
I spent a lot of time working on this. I have given away other models for free over on the 405th (Halo costuming) forums.

It took a couple of months, mostly because of me not knowing how to use the various 3d modeling programs. The final one only took about a week.

    UPDATE:
Due to lots of requests, I have decided to do some more of the armor.
First up, is the shoulder bells.

Click the link below, to download.
    http://www.4shared.com/file/12947414...IShoulder.html
I'll have more, as it happens.

I've also been considering offering the helmet file for free, but my current financial situation(unemployed) and my g/f tell me no. What do you guys think?

Re: Iron Man 3d model for Pepakura

I got a bit more done on the chest and started the abs. I actually got as far as the cod/buttplate, but it looked funky, so I'm redoing it. I'm going to separate the ab plates and extend the tops so they overlap, but I'm going to wait until I have the back done so I have a better feel for where everything lines up. I'm probably going to redo part of the shoulder too. I noticed that part of the lower portion extends too far in my model.

Good progress brother! Are you doing the chest/ab plate as a joint part? Or will they be seperate parts for ease of both build and final movement?

I modeled them as one piece, but I have separated them. I think I'm going to go more accurate and separate and extend them again to get the center and sides scalloped(?) properly. I still need to model the back so I can line everything up better.

Here's another update minus the ab separation.

I've done the hip, but my best reference pics are of the concept art, so I have to move some vertices around to get it to the movie version. I am also going to take a big chunk out of the lower center part of the chest and remodel it. There are just way too many vertices there on an area that will be essentially very flat. The chest started as a sphere, so there are tons of unnecessary vertices in that area.

This is really cool work! how are you constructing it? I only ask because i have some very large CNC equipment suitable for carving 3d models,an extensive background in moldmaking and casting and i just bought a roto casting machine. If you want to produce this costume or any other for that matter, i`d love to get involved.I realize you might think i just want to rip off your model, but that is most definitely not the case. The reality is there is way more money in other manufacturing areas with this kind of equipment.
I do this because i love it and the cool projects i can get involved in.
pm if you`re intrigued. I`ll show some of the other work i`ve done and give you references to check out as to my honesty.

Again cool model.I was toyomg with the idea of cutting the turbosquid model just to see how it comes out, but i`d rather work directly with a creator.

I am i right in thinking you made this out of paper or cardboard and resin.

i wouldn`t have thought that was possible!

I can do silicone cast gloves etc as well.

sorry if i`m getting a little excited, but that suit is pretty impressive.

If it was more interesting to you, you could send me a random part in 3d and i could cut, mold and cast it then send it back to you.
This is precisely why i bought this gear.
I make signs and displays to pay the bills, but i have no love for it.

    .
I haven't actually started cutting and "pepping" the armor yet, but yes, it is intended to be printed onto cardstock, glued together, and coated in resin and fiberglassed.

Just click the download link if you want the file.

I'm almost finished with the chest/back, but I am swamped with "real job" work at the moment, so no updates for a little while. I'll get back to it as soon as I can.

i would need the original obj. file for cnc cutting.
I did a test on another model that i got from turbosquid.
This is really just for testing purposes.
i want to see how accurately the machine will cut and how i can finish it.
Currently i cut half the model in high density foam, then made a plaster mold.
then i melted out the foam with acetone. As soon as i have the mold cleaned, i'll fiberglass it ,break the mold off and do the cleanup with bondo, etc in the usual way.i'll post pics .

Hi doubleh, I´m interesting too in the thing that you do with your machine. I have a pepakura iron man complete armor that I download from a guy and want to know if you join me to try to do quality and no so expensive armors to sell to the fans. email me if you want to morfeus4@telefonica.net. I live in spain.

Re: Iron Man 3d model for Pepakura

Progress? Not much, I've been tweaking here and there mostly. Although, I did start the forearm.
I'm still working on the elbow joint area. It will rotate inside the forearm piece. I also need to tweak the lower bicep to make it line up and make a good range of motion.

More updates are on the way, but I start a new job today, so no promises on how soon.

EDIT: Forearm/handplate done. I decided the forearm parts may not fit once resined and bondo'ed, so I left it as seperate parts. They can be easily joined since the area where they meet is flat.
    Get it Here.

I forgot to tell everyone here that my helmet is now FREE! Thanks to all that purchased it, but due to massive amounts of email and pm's I'm offering the file to everyone for free.
    download the A4 size here.
    download the Letter size here.

Also, I have kind of abandoned building more on the Iron Man models for now. I do have an even more accurate I.M. helmet model in the works. The pep model will include hinge patterns for the face and chin, as well as the articulation on the back of the neck as seen in the concept art.

Wow, fantastic work. I have access to a Sideshow 1:1 scale Mark III and I've also studied David's 3D file. His is based on a scan of a toy head, and it doesn't quite have the right movie look to it. Yours is a lot closer to the Sideshow look. Keep up the good work.

? I find that strange.. You mention you boght one of our suits, but not from us, then your asking for pepakura files...
If you got one of our suits then its pretty expensive.. And then you mention the same people who sold you our suit also make motorized helmets ...
Sorry i just find this a bit strange...

You know, making new armor and other suits may be a good job. How much can cost your completed armor? $2500?

I think it is cool to se people make Iron Man armor if they make it them self and not from something already existing. I encourage people to use their creative skills to make something from the bottom and up that they can call their own.

BTW the Avatar you got is our 2nd Generation armor we made a while back. Its a while since i seen that anywere.... Very few of them exist in reality.

You got some very good 3D skills there. How do you go about creating a 3d sculpture like that? And what type of Font did you use on the Photo it is very similar to the concept drawings text.

Re: Iron Man 3d model for Pepakura

New bucket preview! Pending a few tweaks, This should be much smoother overall than my last helmet, and more accurate to what is on screen. I have shortened the back of the head and there is more geometry in the face and head portions of the model. My next step is to model the mechanisms (hinges etc.) to open the mask, jaw, and neck. I will release two versions of this helmet. One will include the hinges and the other will be essentially what you see in the pics. This is modeled from scratch, and not just an edited version of the other helmet. I hope to have it finished in a few days.
To those who have purchased my other Iron Man helmet, you will receive this one in your email free of charge before I release it on the forums.

The time and effort was mostly spent on tracking down good references. I still can't find a good shot of the back of the head. The only references I have found are of replicas or bad angles for the back of the helmet, so I just guestimated.

Ya good references are hard to find some times. If you look at the back of a lot of IIron Man helmets they all vary and differ from each other. I'm working on a war machine helmet (sculpt) and there is a lot of guestimation work.

Re: Iron Man 3d model for Pepakura

Here's a video of my new Iron Man helmet. The "ears" are modeled inside of the helmet (to make it easier to see when I unfolded it in Pepakura), so they are separate objects which aren't visible in the video. I will have it available for purchase on my blog as soon as I figure out how much I want for it. I'm still working on the hinges, and I've decided that there isn't enough room inside the helmet for the mechanics to make the neck telescope in on itself and still fit your head inside, but I've modeled the hinge for the mask to open properly. It turns out it was easier to do than I had expected. I will make the hinged version available at a later date.

I will be charging for this one, but I haven't decided how much. I think I might work on the rest of the armor again. I have learned a lot since I abandoned it.

When can we see the rest of the armor to download? I have the helmet, the shoulder, the biceps, and I believe the forearm. I am looking for the rest. When I do start putting this together, what size paper should I use? Also, would paper machae work the same as resin and fiberglass?

Re: Iron Man 3d model for Pepakura

I have built it, resined it and hardened it. I have removed the lower neck peice and it fits my head which is rather large (I wear 7-3/4 baseball hats). It's tight on the ears but I believe if you were to use braces while resin'ing you could widen it a little but other than that it fits good and there is a lot of room as far as depth goes. Another masterpeice by Dungbeetle.

The ears pull in a little from where they are on the actual model, but I'm just going to stuff a cut down paper towel tube in between them to get it back where it needs to be for when I glass it.

The first helmet I made is free. I abandoned working on the rest. The link posted above by Tankboy has some excellent highly accurate armor parts. I'm using the medium definition files. Not all of them have been cleaned up and unfolded in pepakura, but they are being updated as they are completed.
