    Nov 18, 2010, 3:20 AM - Hot spots in paint... I need advice... #1

Anyone ever get a hot spot when painting? I'm guessing that what they are are spots in the resin that haven't completely gassed off? They take forever to dry, and have a slightly different sheen until they get matte coated. This spot has been tacky for about 11 hours.

I've seen them before on my old jetpack, and also on a garrison members scout blaster. What I did before was just wait for it to dry, but I'm doing a rush paint up at the moment, and don't know what to do... Anyone know how to take care of these, and dry them out?

At first, I thought that maybe the paint didn't get completely mixed, so I gave it another very light shot of paint, THEN I saw the hot spot... So now, its as tacky as ever. I also tried hitting it with a hair dryer, no luck.

Anyone know how to tackle these? I'd sand and repaint, but thats not gonna get rid of it, if its still gassing.

    Any help is much appreciated.

You can see it here, its the shiny spot circled in red... Everything except that spot is dry...

Just a thought... Would a shot of matte on that spot dry it out enough to be taped? The matte I use is awesome, it covers, fills, and presses all kinds of blemishes... Yes, no?

i've had that problem on a few projects as well. darth carcinus gave me a heads up on what to do. unfortunately you're going to have to sand the helmet down to the resin again, but be sure to clean the spot with acetone first to take off the sticky paint. next wash the helmet real good with soap and water, then before you paint get some cotton balls and rubbing alcohol and wipe the whole thing down. the higher purity of rubbing alcohol the better, 90% is your best bet. it'll dry up any oils that have been trapped in the resin that are slowly making their way to the surface and causing your paint to stay tacky.

I managed to fix it without a total repaint... Since it was just primer and green, I hit it with 400 grit, and alcohol. Resprayed that spot and its good to go. Thanks for the tip.

i'm glad the rubbing alcohol worked out for you, i also love it when a plan comes together. but i really feel this should be common knowledge, like why isn't this information that a maker supplies when he sends you a kit?

I wiped it down before I started... I guess I just should have done a better job prepping. Not the prop makers fault... Most buckets are fresh when you get them. Not alot can be done about it, if you are in a hurry to start working.

Just a minor set back... No worries... Its chuggin' along now.
