I convinced my GF and her friends to do a TMNT theme- Because- it's awesome- Obviously. My friend made his splinter costume as well from scratch (He didn't take any progress pictures though)
ITEMS
I had an old replica army
helmet laying around
A
Paint ball mask to cannibalize
XACTO Knife (Similar craft knife)
Oven
Gloves (To withstand heat to manipulate the pliable PVC that will end up in an oven to shape)
Some sort of press (You'll need this to flatten the PVC while it cools)
Jig Saw
PVC (3" diameter is fine)
Elastic Strapping
Silver Spray Paint
Hot Glue
Enginuity
Hockey/LAX Pads (Or similar sports padding- Football is too expensive. ice hockey pads Are usually the best bet $20 to $50 Dollars)
Free time (I was on vacation)
Craft foam (I used the thicker stuff... This will be your actual Razor spikes)
And some purple Fabric
As you can tell I'm wearing 6-1/2" Platforms to appear more ominous (I'm a 5'6" stocky hobbit... Not the prime stature for a Super Shredder!)
Strencils:
I used painters tape to make stencils for PVC "armor"
PVC ARMOR:
Very cheap, very time consuming EXREMELY DURABLE
Cut the basic sizes you need according to your stencils
Split them down the middle
Throw them on a pyrex dish or baking sheet
Throw them in a 400 degree oven and keep an eye on them...
Usually no more than 8 minutes is sufficient (Open all your windows, get the fans going to circulate air- You won't and shouldn't have them in there long enough to smell death- but, it's a good idea to not inhale any of whatever odors may emanate...)
This is the fancy part-
Throw these PVC pieces in oven 2 at a time
, one at a time- whatever... how ever many fit in your oven and how ever many people you have helping to flatten these things
I used a cutting board and my Rather burly line 6 amp on the counter
After they're all FLATTENED....
CUT OUT THE ARMOR SHAPES
This is annoying with a hand held jig saw...
Trace your armor stencils onto the Flat PVC pieces
(Hand, Gauntlet, shin and shoulders)
Not many in progress pictures for this one- I needed both hands...
Then layer the f_<K UP!
Shape the shins, hands and gauntlets to your body...
Shape the shoulders to the pads...
I used Velcro on the shoulder armor to hold them on (For easy transport)
The helmet is a big pain in the butt
Shape, Cut, detail, paint... I knew I'd want the mask off some of the night to drink, eat and carry on a conversation when I wasn't posing for picture... It's important to eat food (To maintain those gains) and drink booze (To maintain that buzz) Priorities first. I had to make the mask its own piece to put on under the helmet... I did have to remove the helmet to put on/take off the mask. I'll fix that down the line.
AFFIX ELASTIC STRAPS WITH HOT GLUE
Cut out your RAZOR ARMOR
easiest and also a Fun part (You can sit and watch netflix during this phase)
I have a slab of flattened PVC as a cutting board.
Start hacking at ytour craft foam
Spikes- All sizes.
Hot glue them to the PVC in a configuration of your choosing.
I reversed Shredder's Spikes because I thought the looked cooler that way.
Not many pictures of this, this is kind of obvious
SPRAY PAINT
CUT OUT A CAPE, GRUNDLE SHROUD AND VARIOUS SLABS OF FANCY PURPLE MATERIAL TO COVER YOUR UPPER BODY ARMOR
LIFT SOME WEIGHTS! NO ONE WANTS TO SEE A PUNY SHREDDER!
Raph didn't show up for a party- So I improvised (That's a beer funnel skull/spine)
